We're Beginning Again . . .
& Having a Great Time!
Hi Everyone,
We're moving to Eugene, Oregon, and very much looking forward to joining the maker community there. The more we find out about how many people in Eugene are all about fabric, glass and all so many other trades and crafts, the happier we are!
So we are packing and giving away -- please see The Legacy, which has been mentioned here before but is a fantastic model for similar places to recycle your supplies and fabrics. They now have a lot of what we used to have!
Then, the MySize Barbies for draping classes went to Diane Ericson in Ashland, OR, and I'll be doing some draping classes at her wonderful studio in late October. Several of the full scale forms went to L'Etoffe Fabrics right in Eugene, Ina Mounir's gem of a shop, where I'll be teaching Pleats! on Sept. 5th. This class is about pleating like Babette or Miyake -- done with a teapot!!
My new studio is smaller but so much more efficient -- and with a better view! So this fall I'll be picking up where I left off with an emphasis on unusual skirt patterns -- can't get that Charles James one out of my mind.

sane as you learn make more and more incredible things.
The Obiko Archives This is a stunning accomplishment for the Textile Arts Council at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. They have made available the collection of Sandra Sakata who had the most amazing art-to-wear shop in SF during the 70's-90's. (I remember being so thrilled when she bought my Vionnet Pinwheel dress for herself!).
Met Gala Since this is the cherry on society's sundae, I couldn't ignore but clearly the fitness industry has as much to do with the parade as do the fashion designers. We definitely need a new social model but the theater on that carpet is great. Left, Anna Wintour, Chair of the Gala.
LInda Lundstrom Works It's true, as her "About" says, she really is an icon in Canada and now she is offering classes, Learn With Linda, including one to make your own dress form, at her place an hour north of Toronto. P.S. I heard she had a great sauna, Swedish, you know.

The Accidental Icon: And as if on cue, here's a rather mysterious site (can't find her name) that weaves it all together, the physical, the intellectual, the role of taste, valid critique and where you should be seen, but not too much. Very good. Evidence that a few years of thinking pays off.
The True Cost This is a new documentary that deepens the term 'good taste' to include morality. Time for everyone to accept responsibility and purchase differently.

And now to report a great afternoon! Annette Duburg, lead author of Draping - the Art and Craftsmanship of Fashion Design, came to the US last week, to San Anselmo near me, for her cousin's wedding and we met for coffee and lots of stories. She is quite amazing and I was surprised to find out that as fabulous as the book is, she and Rix, her co-author, had to recreate all the work in it three times for different publishers as she shopped the book. She is seriously the real thing in the draping world and I was so delighted to meet her. I am working to bring her to Oregon for a teaching trip -- her first in the US, so wish me luck!
Now, go sew something you'll love forever . . . you'll get to live both, the sewing and the loving. Sandy Ericson
