Foundations on the Hill Wrap-Up

Foundation and regional association leaders gathered in Washington, DC last week to meet with members of Congress and discuss key issues of importance to foundations and philanthropy. Foundations on the Hill (FOTH) is hosted by the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers, in partnership with the Council on Foundations.

This year more than 190 foundation trustees and staff from across the country participated in FOTH to inform and educate Congress about philanthropy, create visibility for foundations on Capitol Hill, and to advocate on issues affecting foundations and philanthropy.

Many thanks to the 21 regional associations who led a delegation of your members at this year's event!

10 Questions or Less for Paul Daugherty

Paul Daugherty

10 Questions or Less is a feature through which we get to know regional association staff members a little better- their work, what drives them, and more. If you would like to suggest someone for a profile through 10 Questions or Less, contact Dan Brady.

2014 was a big year for Philanthropy West Virginia. What's one thing that stands out as a big victory for the organization?

It's hard to narrow it down to one; I would say fulfilling our strategic plan goals and becoming a thriving organization again. Between program delivery (over 20 a year), membership growth into a significantly stronger financial position, as well as being able to expand our staff component- these are all good stress relievers for me personally. Plus, a recent legislative win for our joint public policy committee with the WV Nonprofit Association. Professionally it's great to see the organization hitting its stride. Our strategic plan is titled "20 Years and Thriving" and now that we're three years into it, it's really about hitting our mark.

I'm sure you have some audacious goals for 2015 as well. Is there anything you're working on now that is particularly exciting?

We're launching into more specific programming for corporate, private, and family foundations, but also into our work being a change agent for the state of West Virginia and central Appalachia. That includes launching some academies and institutes around ethics and leadership in philanthropy. We're also building national partnerships. For example we're bringing in Rip Rapson from the Kresge Foundation to talk about economic progress in times of crisis. As one of my board members puts it, Philanthropy is really becoming not just a player, but a leader in state.

Trista Harris Receives Bush Fellowship

Trista Harris Congratulations to Minnesota Council on Foundations President Trista Harris who has been awarded a 2015 Bush Fellowship! Bush Fellows receive up to $100,000 over 12-24 months to pursue learning experience that help them develop leadership skills.

Trista will use her fellowship to advance her work examining how the tools of futurism, tracking current trends to anticipate the future, can be used to strengthen the field of philanthropy. She will continue to serve full-time as Minnesota Council on Foundations President and will leverage the insights she will gain from her Bush Fellowship to better serve the field.

Trista joins 22 others awarded a fellowship this year. Get an introduction to the whole cohort in a short video put together by the Bush Foundation.

Share Your RA's Interest in a Train the Trainer Workshop on the "What's Next for Community Philanthropy Toolkit"

What's Next for Community PhilanthropyEarlier this month, we held a webinar with Gabriel Kasper of the Monitor Institute to learn more about the What's Next for Community Philanthropy toolkit.  This free, do-it-yourself toolkit includes a series of interactive exercises, conversation starters, and even games designed to help community philanthropy organizations challenge old assumptions, understand the full range of possibilities, and generate creative new approaches and models for the future.

View the recording and slides from the webinar

We are now gauging interest in a series of one-day train-the-trainer workshops that will help regional associations learn how to use the What's Next tools with community philanthropy organization boards and staff in your region.  Please fill out this brief 4-question survey by Friday, April 3 to let us know if your regional association is interested in participating in a workshop.

Urban Institute Releases Survey Results on Community Foundations and the IRA Charitable Rollover
The Urban Institute's Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy recently released the results of a survey of community foundations, which show:
  • The majority of community foundations received donations from the IRA Charitable Rollover provision since it was introduced in 2006.
  • Foundations that reported receiving IRA Charitable Rollover gifts were much more likely to receive smaller rollovers (less than $25,000) than they were to receive gifts that were close to the maximum allowable size ($100,000).
  • Over two-thirds (68.9%) of community foundations report that gifts have been lost, delayed, and/or reduced as a result of uncertainty of the IRA Charitable Rollover being renewed by Congress.
  • Community foundations that have data on donors report that the majority of IRA Charitable Rollover gifts are from donors who report annual income of less than $200,000.

Quarterly Policy Webinar: Moving Affinity Groups to Policy Work (Grantmakers Welcome)

Wednesday, April 22: 2-3 pm ET

Public policy work is hard. Collaborative work is hard. Add the two together and you get a complex enterprise. There have been no magic formulas or can't-miss strategies. Determining why and how to take on policy work requires steady inquiry, analysis, strategy, openness, and horsepower. But the results can be significant.

Based on interviews with members of regional association affinity groups, the Forum has created a self-assessment tool and planning checklist to help affinity groups engaging in policy work determine how well they're set up for success.

During this webinar we will review the tools and hear from members of regional associations that are engaging in RA affinity group policy work.
