Matt Bruner is Ballard Health Club's newest team member. He is a very active guy, playing basketball and Ultimate Frisbee, hiking, kayaking and mountain biking.  Parkour rounds out his plethora of recreational activities.

Matt says that he gets the most joy from experiencing the boost in confidence and happiness that people get after making a healthy lifestyle change.  Soon, he will be taking his American Council on Exercise (ACE) Personal Trainer Certification, and then you'll be able to make an appointment and experience the happiness and boost in confidence first hand!

Take a moment and welcome Matt to the BHC family!

Brains & Balance Past 60

Recently, two of our trainers, Jade Dahle and Chad Cook received a new training certification: "Brains & Balance Past 60".  This specialty certification focuses not only on improving memory and problem solving skills, but also balance and core strength to reduce fall risks, and so much more!
Chad has always had an affinity for helping older adults age gracefully. His approach is all about balancing mind and body to increase your daily quality of life and he's designed a sample workout to help you do just that. Would you like to try some new things to improve your balance, strength and flexibility while also improving your memory?  Give this program a shot or make an appointment with Chad to design a custom program to challenge your brains and balance at any age!

Try 8-12 repetitions per exercise.

Perform each exercise 1-2 times.
  • Fitball Squats at Wall
  • Fitball Chest Squeeze

  • Single Leg Balance (8-12 seconds)

  • Step-ups

  • Resistance Band Rows

  • Resisted Forward Strides

  • Standing Knee-ups for balance and flexibility
     (hold bar if needed)

  • Bird Dog

  • Standing Bridge at Wall

Chad looks forward to answering any questions you may have about these exercises or offering you alternative exercises to modify or advance this routine!

Workshops at Ballard Health Club

Here at BHC we are always looking at ways to expose our members to new and different class experiences. Whether it's an opportunity to learn something you never would have considered, or a chance to dig deeper into your existing practice, workshops are here for you! Take a look at our upcoming offerings below.

 November 15th 2:00-4:00 PM

Tracy Hodgeman

In this 2 hour workshop we will take a look at the basic anatomy and physiology of back pain to help uncover common unhealthy habits. We will practice healthy alignment and movement patterns (sitting, standing and walking). We will learn gentle stretching and strengthening exercises designed to increase support and balance to the structures of the spine and pelvis, legs and feet. We will practice self-massage techniques that help to relieve pain, increase circulation, speed healing, and build a better mental embody map. You will leave with a well-stocked tool kit of back care savvy that will help you to solve current issues and avoid future problems.

Forsooth Restorative Yoga and Poetry:

December 13th 1:00-3:00 PM

Elliot Tillmann

and Jonathan Swerdick

Join yoga instructor Elliott Tillmann with poet Jonathan Swerdlick for a one and a half hour restorative yoga workshop featuring poetry read aloud. Begin with very gentle warm up movements and finish with a long series of restorative yoga poses that take full advantage of blankets, blocks and bolsters. Let your body be quieted while your mind is opened by works of poetry both great and small from around the world. This workshop is accessible to all ages and abilities, including those healing from injury. Come to linger quietly for a few moments in each pose and savor the simple sweetness of restoration, poetry, and yoga.

Cost to attend workshops: $20 for members, $30 for non-members ($20 plus $10 drop-in fee at time of workshop).
"Get Tanked"

If you've ever wanted to get started on a plan to make real progress, or want to get back on track, getting your body fat tested in a hydrostatic tank is a great way to precisely benchmark your fitness. Getting dunked takes just 10 minutes, and afterward, you'll get a detailed report to keep, showing:
  • Your fat and fat-free body mass, as percentages and in actual weight
  • How much fat, if any, you need to lose to achieve your desired body composition
  • How many calories per day you burn without exercising-unique to you
  • How many calories you burn from different exercises-again, specifically for your body
  • Where you are on a scale of ideal body fat for your age and gender
  • Your history, if you've been tested before
The Body Fat Test truck will be at Ballard Health Club this coming Sunday morning (November 9th). Call us at 206-760-4882 or stop by the front desk to make an appointment. This is for both members and non-members. $49 for initial test. $35 for re-test. Pay at time of testing.  Questions about the Body Fat Test > check here

From the Owner

As of January 1st of this year, I became the "new" owner of Ballard Health Club. The time seems to go by fast and I still feel like the "new" owner. I want you to know I appreciate all the feedback on how things have been going this year and all the kind "thanks for not messing things up" words of support :).

BHC is a member driven club. What that means is that we listen and observe what our members want from their neighborhood community gym and we do our best to respond accordingly. This year we built a boxing room, started a Silver Sneakers program, rearranged equipment to better fit member use, replaced the studio mats, brought in state-of-the-art dense foam rubber jump boxes and purchased a variety of exercise aids. All of these improvements were prompted by member requests.

Please keep your suggestions coming to help BHC be the best place you want to spend your time getting fit!

Sincerely,

Pat Gilbrough
