Store Cards: Seldom the Better Deal
With offers of an additional 10% off your purchase or free merchandise, it's tempting to apply for credit cards from your favorite retail stores. Think twice, however, before signing up. If you don't pay the bill in full at the end of each month, you could end up paying much more than you originally would have saved.
That's because interest rates on retail cards average about ten percentage points higher than credit union credit cards. Store cards usually offer special incentives for cardholders to increase loyalty and encourage them to spend more. The average household has about seven store-issued credit cards. If you plan to buy a car or house in the near future, it can hurt your chances to get a loan at a favorable rate if you have many recently opened lines of credit. It's usually better to have one major credit card that you can use for all items you wish to charge. GPFCU offers credit cards at great rates at 6.9% Balance Transfer and 9.9% New Purchases!

Visa Credit Cards: For Members Only!
By Janet Snyder, Credit Card Coordinator/Member Service Rep
Here at GPFCU we offer what we like to call a "
No Frills" Visa Credit Card. Our rates are very low and only available to you as a member!
6.9% Balance Transfer (No Fee!)
9.9% New Purchase
Your payments would be due the 28th of every month and the minimum payment would be 3% of your balance.
As the Credit Card Coordinator, I have seen it all and here are a few things to keep in mind:
My first rule of thumb is to spend wisely! Don't go above half of your credit limit as this will have a negative impact on your credit score (say your limit is $5,000.00 - don't go over $2,500.00).
Do not use your card for day-to-day purchases or living expenses. Instead, keep this line of credit open for major purchases such as appliances, furniture, car repairs, tires, etc. And you definitely don't want to put yourself in the position to be paying of this year's Christmas presents next year.
To save yourself paying unnecessary interest, I recommend paying more than your minimum balance. The more you pay upfront, the less interest will accrue every month!
Make sure to make your payments on time! If you do not, you will be charged a late penalty fee of $20.00 with our credit card. Not only is this bad for your credit score, it is bad for your wallet! Make sure you are keeping track of your due date. I recommend using a bill tracking or reminder app on your smart phone or tablet.
If you are interested in applying for our Visa Credit Card, please click here to download and print your application. Please be sure to mail the application and a copy of a recent pay stub to:
Passavant Professional Building
1st Floor, Suite 1107 A
Pittsburgh, PA 15237
As always, I am here to answer any questions about the application process, payment, or any general credit card inquiries. You may call me at 412.748.6338.
Sincerely,
Jan Snyder
Credit Card Coordinator

Operation Safety Net

December 21, 2013 is Winter Solstice. It is the longest and darkest night of the year. Every year operation Safety Net sponsors a public vigil in downtown Pittsburgh. It is a candlelight memorial to all the people who passed away while living on our streets. Please join us in providing some small item of hope for a person in need.
GPFCU has an opportunity to work with Operation Safety Net which is part of the Mercy Health Care System. They now provide a vast array of services for our homeless brothers and sisters. Our Board of Directors has kindly allowed us to gather, new and gently used, gloves, socks, and thermal underwear for their program.
The three drop off points will be Webster Hall, Children's, and Passavant Hospital.
Mrs. Juliano and Chris Wroblewski have provided the containers that will house the donated items. Our kick off gathering date will be Tuesday, November 19th. And end on Friday, December 20, 2013.
For more information about Operation Safety Net please visit their website here for more information about the program.

Six Rules for Managing Credit Card Debt
If you want to be the master of your credit card debt load, follow these key rules:
1. Take inventory. How many credit cards do you have? What's the balance and minimum monthly payment on each? What's the total balance? If it's more than you thought or can afford, it's time to pare down.
2. Check out the cost of your credit cards. What's the interest rate on each card? What's the annual fee? Does your card offer a grace period? If the card doesn't have a grace period, or if you carry over a balance, or take a cash advance, you're usually charged interest right away.
3. Get one low-fee or lower-interest card and use it wisely. Make GPFCU your first stop when starting your search. Check to see if you can transfer existing debt from your various credit cards to your new lower-interest credit card.
4. Make the largest monthly payment you can afford. Even though you may not be able to pay your balance in full, paying the monthly minimum may do little more than cover the accrued interest.
5. Watch out for "teaser rates." Your mailbox may be brimming with unsolicited credit card offers that promise attractive low-interest rates. But if you read the fine print, you'll see that after six months or so the issuer may double the low introductory rate.
6. If you get in over your head, don't bury it in the sand.
If you're having trouble making your monthly payments, contact your creditors before they contact you. If you're already screening calls from bill collectors, or refusing to open your mail, you need help.
Contact GPFCU at 412.621.6800. We're here to help you get your finances back in order.
