Why Do Credit Unions Talk Funny?

Credit unions offer many of the same services you find at other financial institutions, but sometimes use different words to describe familiar activities. It's all part of what makes credit unions significantly different from other financial service providers.

Your credit union savings represent your "share" in the financial cooperative, which is what a credit union is. Thus, you have a share savings account, or, for a fixed-term account, a share certificate account. And if you have an account you use, for example, to pay bills and finance daily recreation, you have a share draft account, so named because you're able to draw on your shares. In all respects, these accounts work the same way savings, certificate of deposit, and checking accounts work at other institutions.

Dividends are the share of earnings GPFCU distributes to shareholders--members.

Fees and borrowing rates are lower, and savings rates higher, because credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives. Profit-driven financial institutions like banks must make money to pay stockholders in proportion to their holdings. All credit union members benefit from the credit union's financial success, but bank income bypasses customers to pay a limited number of stockholders.

Your credit union shares are backed by share insurance up to $250,000. And GPFCU undergoes rigorous examination by NCUA (National Credit Union Association) to assure sound operation and management. GPFCU received its operating charter--permission to do business and the rules it must observe--from the NCUA in 1955.

The directors and management comply with the charter and also with the credit union's own bylaws. These are rules that members and directors adopt to define the credit union's field of membership (who's eligible to join), set the par value of shares (in other words, is each share $5, or some other value?), and describe common credit union functions.

Now that we're all speaking the same language, call 412.621.6800 or stop by any branch for information about membership or any of our financial services--on your terms, of course!

President's Corner

In preparing for this President's Corner, I began to reflect back on the many members I have spoken to and assisted during my 35 years with the credit union.  As an organization our purpose to is help members with their financial needs.  We all need a place where we feel comfortable and secure in doing business, where we get good advice and the opportunity to choose whatever path we need to take to secure our financial future.  I am pleased that so many of you have chosen your credit union to do that.  With a staff of friendly and professional people you are not just a number, but a person.  With five convenient locations you have access to staff and services when needed.  Every staff member is not only trained to work with you, but for you.  We know you both personally and professionally, many by first name or even your voice on the phone.
As we enter the Holiday Season please look to us for that loan that will make your Christmas merry and bright.  Don't forget to call or stop in for your Christmas Club money whenever you are ready for it.  If you do not have a Christmas Club account at this time, open one up for next year.  A payroll deduction now can be helpful next year.  Call or view all of our services on our website.

Sincerely,
