Man Up Month

To increase awareness for men's health, FortisAlberta held their first ever "Man Up Month" during the month of February. It was held to encourage their employees to get regularly checked for prostate and other male-specific illnesses, and to raise money to support the Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre. The campaign was very successful, raising over $12,000. This money is being used by FortisAlberta to host MAN VAN™ clinics, so their employees can be proactive with their health.

Rock A Billy

On January 30, the 17th annual Bill Brooks Benefit. returned to Hotel Arts featuring Rock A Billy. Poodle skirts, big hair and leather were seen everywhere, all while raising an amazing $689,000 for Calgary's Prostate Cancer Centre. That brings the cumulative total to nearly $7 million! Just to make things even more electrifying, a brand new Harley Davidson was raffled off. Thank you to Canada Safeway for sponsoring the event, the Calgary Health Trust for partnering with the Bill Brooks Benefit Committee and all other donor, sponsors and supporters for all your help in making this event such a success. Most importantly, thank you to Bill Brooks for being such a strong advocate of Calgary's Prostate Cancer Centre and prostate cancer awareness over the last 17 years.

Research Update

We are pleased to share with you the "top line" results from the Astellas Terrain study. PCC has participated in this study for the past several years under the leadership of Dr. Donnelly. This study compared Enzalutamide to Bicalutamide in castrate men with metastatic prostate cancer with the primary end point of progression free survival (PFS).  The study achieved a statistically significant increase in PFS for Enzalutamide  (median PFS was 15.7 months in the Enzalutamide group compared to 5.8 months in the Bicalutamide group).

The PCC is currently the site with the greatest accruals to the APCaRI Alberta Prostate Registry and Biorepository study. This study aims to improve diagnosis of prostate cancer and to stop metastasis by evaluating new tests and incorporating them into the clinic. Collecting biological samples and medical information from interested participants will facilitate this. For details, please contact Leanne at 403-943-8942 or [email protected]
