15 Highlights in 15 Years

Since opening in 1999, we have:

1.
Gone from 3 staff members to 17.

2.

Gone from 5 volunteers to over 70.

3.

Gone from a building that has 3 clinical rooms, a resource centre and a boardroom to a new building with 5 clinical rooms, a bigger resource centre and 2 boardrooms.

4.

Moved into the Southern Alberta Institute of Urology (SAIU) where all 15 Urologists in southern Alberta and the Prostate Cancer Centre share one location.

5.

Set a Guinness world record for the most men given a PSA blood test in 8 hours.

6.

The research department at the Prostate Cancer Centre has conducted multiple national and international studies. Currently there are 5 ongoing studies and 3 new studies starting.

7.

Collaborated with the Alberta Prostate Cancer Research Initiative (APCaRI). The PCC site is leading the accruals into the Alberta Prostate Registry and Biorepository. This study aims to improve diagnosis of prostate cancer and to stop metastasis by evaluating new tests and incorporating them into the clinic. This will be facilitated by collecting biological samples and medical information from interested participants.

8.

Created the Man Van™ Program. There are 2 Vans - one for urban Calgary and the other for rural southern Alberta. They promote PSA testing to men over 40 by bringing a free PSA blood test to them. Over 17,000 men have been tested. This program is the only one of its kind in Canada.

9.

Added 24 casual Nurses and Medical Lab Assistants that help operate the Man Vans.

10.

Created 6 Rapid Access Clinics (RAC) where men get "rapid access" to a urologist and care when there is a concern about prostate cancer. This cuts the wait times to see a urologist from 3 months to less than 2 weeks.

11.

Have created a total of 10 programs (including RACs) at the Centre.

12.

Launched the Combines for Cures™ program. It includes a Man Van that travels throughout rural southern Alberta as well as a grain drive fundraiser to raise money for the program.

13.

Created new partnerships with ProstAID, EFW, Bio Banking and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

14.

Annually, over 12,000 men and their families visit the Prostate Cancer Centre where we are provided with the most current resources.

15.

We have continued to operate as a non-profit charity organization and we depend on the generosity of our community fundraisers, sponsor and individual donors.

Give Grain and Save Lives

One in seven Alberta men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Grain donations help bring the Man Van to communities in southern Alberta, offering a quick, simple baseline PSA blood test to men over 40.
