This month we are celebrating our "ones". That one person it takes to make a difference. These unsung heroes might not make national headlines but they are making a huge difference every day to our Centre and the families we serve. We want to take this opportunity to thank them and YOU for joining us in the fight against prostate cancer.

Luge Ride Against Prostate Cancer

What makes a world class athlete? Hard work, dedication, setting a goal that takes you beyond your own comfort and lots of heart. On March 8, Kimberley McRae put all these qualities to work for the Prostate Cancer Centre. Kim used her expertise as an Olympic luge athlete and personal motivation from her uncle's battle with prostate cancer to tug at our heart strings. Kim decided to raise both awareness and funds for prostate cancer which often still occurs without any signs or symptoms.

Kim created an event called the 'Luge Ride Against Prostate Cancer' and invited 80 adventurous riders to join her in the ultimate toboggan ride down the luge track at COP. A variety of folks young and old brought their enthusiasm and big smiles to rise to the challenge including our own Dr. Bryan Donnelly.

We'd like to thank Kim and the team at Winsport for raising awareness and funds to the tune of $12,000. We are proud of you and can't wait for the 2018 Winter Olympics!

#nakedespy

We all have a special place in our hearts for our dads and the owner of one of Calgary's top fashion stores is no different. Megan Szanik is the dynamic lady and driving force behind the #nakedespy experience. This is the fourth year of this incredible event. The cheeky fundraiser is held annually at the ESPY store in Inglewood. In March we cheered on 100 chilly men braving the arctic spring in their boxers all to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Centre.

Megan's motivation to start the fundraiser came when her father was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010. She said it was Calgary's Prostate Cancer Centre that helped him through his journey. She saw how our Centre makes a difference in men's lives and she wanted to help. By bringing fun marketing to an event, her goal was to engage younger guys and get them talking about prostate cancer and their health earlier.

This formula has definitely been successful as the 2014 event raised over $36,000 for the Prostate Cancer Centre. Thank you Megan!

Thanks a Million Agrium

Agrium is known in the business world as one of the largest philanthropic organizations in North America. Over the years they have been a huge supporter of the Prostate Cancer Centre. When Mike Wilson announced his retirement from Agrium they honored him with a $1 million gift to be designated to the charity of his choice. Using the same diligence and educated decision making he has used throughout his business life, Mike Wilson investigated ways to invest these charitable dollars.

He saw value in the active surveillance clinics and directed his parting gift from Agrium to this worthwhile endeavour. Hi his usual unassuming way, Mike made this million dollar gift in his hometown so men will have access to the best medical care while delaying or avoiding unnecessary treatment. The Rapid Access Clinic 5 will be known as the Mike Wilson Active Surveillance Clinic.

Volunteer Appreciation

One plus one... equals 72 amazing volunteers that contribute their time to the Prostate Cancer Centre. During National Volunteer Week we thanked our volunteers for all the time they have shared with us and the patients at the Prostate Cancer Centre over the last year. The volunteer work that they do each and every day at the Centre and on the Man Van, speaks volumes about who they are as individuals. They are dedicated, caring, compassionate and giving people. The Prostate Cancer Centre could not do all the work it does without them. They are truly the Heart of Our Centre and we appreciate all the time and talent that they share with us on a daily basis. Our volunteers contributed 3,600 hours of service in 2013! Wow, such an amazing accomplishment. Each ONE of you makes a huge difference.
