The temperature might be freezing outside, but it is heating up at the Prostate Cancer Centre.
16th Annual Bill Brooks Prostate Cancer Benefit
Broadway Billy

The curtains may have closed on the 16th Annual Bill Brooks Prostate Cancer Benefit, but Broadway Billy was a complete success. This year's featured performance raised more than $600,000 for the Prostate Cancer Centre in Calgary. Sponsored by Canada Safeway (three years running) more than 700 people mingled and danced the night away at Hotel Arts on January 24th. Thank you to all who came out and to Bill Brooks for being such a strong advocate of the fight against prostate cancer. We can't wait to see what you cook up for 2015.

Robbie Burnstein Dinner

The Prostate Cancer Centre teamed up with the folks from the Beth Tzedec Synagogue as we celebrated Robbie Burns Day, while encouraging men to get checked for prostate cancer. From the sea of plaid, to the parade of the haggis, the dinner was a huge success. We watched in awe as the Calgary Burns Club Singers and the Calgary Police Pipe Band performed and we were entertained by various speeches and toasts. Thank ye to all who came out and helped make this event a success. So the question remains, what's under yer kilt?

Calgary Motorcycle Show

Chrome, leather and the Man VanTM drew record crowds despite the sub zero temperatures outside the BMO Centre. We tested almost 250 men during the 3 day event. A special thanks to the Calgary Ride for Dad for sponsoring the Man Van at the show. The 2014 Calgary Ride for Dad is on June 14, 2014.

FarmTech 2014

Thanks to the generous support of Canadian Canola Growers Association, the rural MAN VAN™ attended FarmTech, Canada's largest agricultural show in Edmonton, for the first time in January. During the 2.5 days of the show and due in large part to the non-stop promotion by the CCGA and FarmTech, our clinical team provided a record 270 PSA blood tests to men over 40 and created widespread awareness to farm families about the importance of early detection. We welcome the opportunity to reach people at industry events and look forward to attending many more in the future.

Survivor Story

"My journey down the Prostate Cancer trail started in the Fall of 2001. I went to my GP for an annual check-up and for the first time he did the DRE check; the result of which was that he detected a little roughness on one side of the Prostate Gland. I was referred to an Urologist who again did the DRE and sent me for a PSA test (only slightly above normal). As a result of these examination/tests I was scheduled for a biopsy; now what the heck was that all about? I received a phone call and was told that my Urologist wanted to see me. That meeting will be forever etched in my memory as to be told that I had the big "C" was devastating. Although I heard the rest of the conversation I did not remember much of it as all I could think of was that I was in trouble. It is now almost 12 years since my surgery and I am classed as Cancer free. I was one of the lucky ones who did not insist on annual checks (did not even know that I should do this) and only because of my GP who did the DRE examination I am now a Prostate Cancer Graduate.

I started volunteering at the Prostate Cancer Center in 2004. I was determined that I wanted to help to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer so that other men would not be in the potential risk position I was personally in. I am fortunate to be a Prostate Cancer Graduate and very proud to be part of the volunteer group at the Prostate Cancer Center; we try to make a difference."
