Horrible Histories - Barmy Britain - Part Three!

It's history with the nasty bits left in!

2015 sees Horrible Histories Live on Stage celebrate its 10th anniversary with productions taking place across the globe. Birmingham Stage Company presents nine Horrible Histories productions - four of which are world premières, which will play across all 52 weeks of this year.

Following the major sell-out success of Horrible Histories - Barmy Britain Parts One & Two, the company will return to the Garrick Theatre in London's West End with a brand new instalment, Horrible Histories - Barmy Britain - Part Three!, making it the longest running show for children in West End history.

From the pens of Terry Deary and Neal Foster, the barmiest bits of British history will attack the stage, including a special sketch with King John to celebrate the 800th year of the signing of the Magna Carta. As usual, there's been no stint on accuracy as Neal Foster has been taking advice on the scene from one of the UK's foremost historians David Carpenter - Professor of Medieval History at King's College London whose new book on the subject was recently published.

Starring Neal Foster and Anthony Spargo, the production opens on 29 July at the Garrick Theatre, with previews from 25 July, and runs until 5 September. Prior to the London performances the production will play at Trowbridge Civic Centre on 18-19 July.

Will King John be a martyr for the Magna Carta? Party with the Puritans and light up your life with the Great Fire of London! Clap along with crazy King Charles! Will you see eye to eye with Admiral Nelson? Does the Duke of Wellington get the boot? Vomit with the vile Victorians and make a great escape from the First World War.

Horrible Histories are recommended for ages 6 to 106! (107 year olds may not like it as much). Visit www.barmybritain.com for more details. You can also keep up to date on Twitter and Facebook.

Garrick Theatre Box Office: 0844 482 9673

  JittaBugs North East

Here at Jittabugs we love to Move & Groove, Jump & Jive, Jiggle and a Wiggle and a Tip Tap Toe. Find a class near you and give it a Go!!!

I have studied and worked in education my entire career so when my husband and I decided to start a family I invested a great deal of time reading in order to prepare me for my new role of being a mother.  I didn't however just read the usual parenting books but read about brain development and how a child learns.  I found a growing body of research that proved the importance and value of exposing children to music as early as possible and how music nurtures children's success at school and in life.

I therefore looked into baby music classes available and took my baby girl of 3 weeks to our first Jittabugs class.  My daughter, Mary, who is now 3 and her brother Isaac who closely followed a year later and is now 2 have regularly attended Jittabugs.  I have had the pleasure and privilege of watching them engage in Jjittabugs classes and can't underestimate the value of being a part of these classes.  The classes have allowed me to share lots of laughter and precious moments with my children and I have observed them developing a range of skills and concepts along with making friends.

I have also made friends and the classes are a great social event in my calendar. I am so passionate about the numerous benefits that a programme like jittabugs gives to both parents and children and I am so excited to now have the opportunity to share the jittabugs experience with families in Durham.

Summer Special! 'Once Upon a Time with Jittabugs'. See Facebook for details.

Jittabugs Durham are also launching Messybugs in August 2015. Reserve your place now!

Cambridge Summer Music Festival - Music for Kids

The Cambridge Summer Music Festival always provides some real treats for kids and families to enjoy and plenty of opportunities to get involved in music making, and 2015 is no exception.

Music and Magic

Kicking off on Sunday 19 July is a family concert at The Junction with the Classic Buskers and Neil Henry. They have teamed up to create a brand new crazy musical magical show. This is busking, but not as you know it! With the help of top comedy director Mark Tinkler of the English Pocket Opera Company, the Buskers' wit and musical virtuosity on over forty instruments (including every sort of flute, recorders, ocarinas, panpipes, an electric saxophone and a very well-tuned rubber fish) is combined with the often unbelievable tricks and illusions of one of Britain's best-known magicians.

The Piper of Hamelin

As part of the day of special events to celebrate the 70th birthday of Cambridge's own celebrated composer and conductor John Rutter, there will be two performances of his beautiful opera for children, The Piper of Hamelin. Two chances to see it! (Saturday 25 July, The Great Hall, Leys School, 3.30pm & 7pm)

The Wizard of Oz

A whole week of singing, dancing and fun in workshops directed by Jeremy James Taylor OBE, the founder and director of the National Youth Music Theatre, culminating in two workshop performances of the ever-popular children's classic The Wizard of Oz. Booking for this course is essential (Sunday 26 - Friday 31 July, The Perse Upper School), but the two workshop performances of The Wizard of Oz are open to all (Friday 31 July, The Perse Upper School, Hills Road, 2pm and 3.30pm).

Family picnic concert

What better way to spend a summer Sunday afternoon than taking the whole family to the wonderful Wandlebury Country Park, Cambridge's very own mountainous region (well, slightly raised above the city) to be entertained by the sounds of live music in a family concert in the open air. Plenty of space to run about, bring your rugs and your picnics and make a day of it: relax and have fun (Sunday 26 July, Wandlebury Country Park (The Gogs), 3.30pm).

Street performers

Don't forget to look and listen out for the street performers of Opera Anywhere in the first weekend of the Festival. Look out for Opera Anwhere's unique versions of operas old and new in venues such as The Grand Arcade, Michaelhouse and maybe even punts on the river (Saturday 18 - Sunday 19 July, 'Anywhere' in Cambridge).

For full information on all the concerts in this year's Festival programme visit the website: www.cambridgesummermusic.com.
