National Afternoon Tea Week!

National Afternoon Tea Week, 11-17th August celebrates the Great British tradition of Afternoon Tea with a week of activities, themed menus and offers in hotels, restaurants and tearooms across the UK in August. Afternoon tea is the perfect family activity and with many of London's top hotels offering children's alternative Afternoon Tea, there's plenty for all the family to get excited about.

  • For something truly outrageous, you could all take a trip to the Charlie and Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea at One Aldwych. From decadent golden eggs to blueberry brioche and playful flavoured candy floss, every item reflects the wit and wonder of Roald Dahl's classic tale. Teatime treats are presented with a selection of award-winning loose leaf teas and infusions from Covent Garden's Tea Palace, each of which has been chosen to complement the delicate flavours from the kitchen.
  • Mercer Street's Stupendous Afternoon Tea at the Scoff and Banter Bar and Restaurant is a fabulously fun tea party, with plenty of surprises including their Ludicrously Lovely Lemon Loaf Cake, Tremendously Terrific Trifle and Fantastic Fondue. Located in the heart of London's theatre district, Covent Garden, this afternoon tea is the perfect pre-show dining experience, with children also receiving a complimentary copy of Roald Dahl's much-loved classic, Matilda.
  • At Grover's Tea Time at Grovenor House children can enjoy their very own Afternoon Tea treat, which includes a glass of Luscombe wild elderflower bubbly and their very own cuddly Grover to take home.
  • Or enjoy the Little Prince/Princesses afternoon tea at the Red Carnation Hotels in London, which has been especially designed for children under the age of 12 years. Including a selection of sandwiches, freshly baked scones with Devonshire clotted cream, mini cheese cakes and macaroons accompanied by a delicious hot chocolate drink, it's the perfect introduction to the tradition.
So shake off that outdated view of afternoon teas as the privileged pastime of ladies who lunch and take advantage of a 25% discount at participating venues across the country this Afternoon Tea Week.
Find out what's happening in your region on afternoontea.co.uk, the online home of afternoon tea.

For The First Time Visitors Can Bring Museums To Life With New Augmented Reality Games From Gamar

London's most prominent museums are literally coming to life thanks to pioneering technology that  triggers interactive, augmented reality gaming experiences when looking at real-life objects and environments. Set to change the way we learn in and interact with public galleries, augmented reality will create a fun learning experience that helps people understand their surroundings. Technology company Gamar perfectly merges culture and technology with its easy to use app and games. Suitable for children aged seven upwards, simply hold a smart phone or tablet near an object and watch the display as the two instantly interact - helping children learn about the stories and history behind exhibits. Don't delay, visit today and be one of the first to try it out. The Gamar app is available through Google Play and App Store for FREE and each game is priced at 2.49, see www.gamar.com

How it works

The software, which is able to interact with real-life objects and environments on display, triggers interactive, augmented reality gaming experiences that are then played through smart phones and tablets. It has been developed to enhance the museum-going experience for younger, technology savvy generations by 'gamifying' the learning experience.

This is the first time Gamar's technology has been made available for the general public, and its founders believe it could change the way we learn and interact with the world around us.

The British Museum

The 'A Gift for Athena' game at The British Museum tells the story of how a gift for the goddess Athena's birthday is stolen during a celebratory parade Children are then asked to complete four challenges about the Parthenon temple to help get the gift back. On the way, they will uncover fascinating details about famous statues, the wonderful stories behind many of the people depicted on the friezes, and the epic history of ancient Greece.

The development of the app was supported by Samsung and can also be used by primary schools and family visitors to the Samsung Digital Discovery Centre onsite.

Think About Your Eyes This Summer!

When you're out and about with the kids this summer it's important to remember to keep them safe in the sun. We're all pretty good these days at remembering to apply plenty of sunscreen to our wriggling little ones before they run off to play but are we as vigilant when it comes to sunglasses?

UV rays can damage our eyes as well as our skin and, further down the line, this damage can contribute to serious conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration that can lead to sight loss. Children can be particularly vulnerable too as they spend so much time outside and their eyes are not fully developed, which means they have wider pupils that can let through more rays.

It's not all doom and gloom though as there are lots of simple things you can do to keep young eyes safe, like making sure your little ones are never without a sun hat and shades in the summer months. To provide parents with expert advice and tips, opticians from the Think About Your Eyes campaign have joined forces with the British Skin Foundation to put together the UV Protectors Pack. Crammed with information, the pack has been designed for both parents and teachers and even includes a fun picture for your little ones to colour in.
