Message from Michael Karangelen, SAF President

Alumni & Friends,

Last month, we introduced the new student team at SAI.  This month, we would like to introduce to you the new students of the eLab program.  In the article below, you will meet several dynamic young Cornellians, like Alex Krakoski '16, CEO of Worthy Jerky and Feifan Zhou '16, CEO of Tunetap. Alex is a chemical engineering major in ENG, who he began his entrepreneurial journey while still in high school. Feifan and the team at Tunetap, won the 2014 Cornell Shark Tank competition, earlier this month.

Many of you will be heading back to campus on April 10-11 for E@C's Celebration 2014. I have said before that I think this event is the single best networking event that Cornell holds in Ithaca.  It attracts numerous senior executives, entrepreneurs and investors.

Also, Student Agencies plays a prominent role. The eLab Demo Day presentation will be at 4:45pm on Thursday, April 10th in the Statler Auditorium. Last year was the first year that the eLab teams presented their businesses at the Demo Day event, during the E@C Celebration, and it was a huge success.  Hundreds of people attended the presentation, the Statler Auditorium was packed, and the feedback was that eLab Demo Day was the highlight of the E@C Celebration.

In addition, SAF is hosting a symposium session on Friday, April 11th at 9:15am.  This year's format will be "shark tank" style where 2 or 3 recent Cornell alumni entrepreneurs, who are looking to raise money for their business, will present in front of a panel of Cornell venture capitalists.  We are still finalizing the selection of the presenting teams and the VC's.  If you are interested in participating in this event, feel free to contact us.

The biggest news that I want to share with you is that my wife Kerry (Motelson) Karangelen BS '08 MS '09 and I had our first child on January 4th.

Our son Michael James Karangelen III is a beautiful and happy baby.  We are calling him MK3, and he has told us that he wants to run the Student Agencies' personal robot rental business in 2034.

Sincerely,

Michael Karangelen '90

eLab Update  - Daniel Cohen

eLab - the Business incubator for Cornell Students supported by Student Agencies Foundation (SAF) and works in collaboration

with E@C.

In the August 2013 eNewsletter, we announced that

Cornell University would be offering course credit (5.5 credits) to participants of the eLab program, beginning in the Fall of 2013. I would like to provide you with a brief update on the eLab program since that major change.

This fall we had the largest qualified applicant pool since we begin in 2008. We admitted 15 teams.  Based on their performance in NBA 6230, we made a secondary cut and admitted 10 teams into the spring program of eLab.  This fall, we worked with the student teams on their customer discovery skill so they could determine how their products would fit in today's market. This spring, the teams will further hone their business plans and begin looking at their next phase: acquiring good people and appropriate capital.

As the director of eLab, I'm very proud of the work being done by the individual students, eLab Fellows, our new Assistant Director, Peter Cortle '11 and our team of mentors.  I hope that you will join us at the eLab DEMO DAY coming up in April. eLab's Student Teams will be taking center stage during Entrepreneurship@Cornell's Celebration 2014.

Mark your calendars:

Thursday, April 10th at 4:45pm in the Statler Auditorium

(this had been the traditional keynote address time)
