Message from Michael Karangelen, SAF President

Alumni & Friends,

We have some wonderful articles to share with you this month:

  • Nathaniel Weiss ('09), Chair of the Search Committee has an article announcing the new CEO of Student Agencies, Inc. This is a very exciting time at SAI, and I'd like to thank the full search committee: Nathaniel, Adrian Madland ('99), Sharon Dauk (MBA '89) and Nancy Humphries for all of their hard work over the past 10 months.
  • We are launching a new alumni series entitled "Four Questions with..."  In this series, the alumnus answers four simple questions about how they got involved in the Student Agencies Family, their student experience and their path since leaving Cornell.  Kristen McClellan ('12) is an young alumna who spent all four of her undergraduate years in the eLab program. She has a unique story to share with us. Some of you will recognize Kristen, as she was one of our four panelist at the very well attended SAF panel at E@C's Celebration this past April.
  • We are welcoming four new members to Student Agencies Foundation Membership this year: Dan Cohen, Kartik Das ('14), Dana Lampert ('08) and Zach Shulman ('87, MBA '90). These four individuals have made substantial contributions to the mission of both eLab and SAI. Join me... in thanking, and welcoming, them.

I would like to point out that just this week - we launched the SAF Facebook page. This will be the place for quick SAF news posts, photos of our future SAF events, shared updates from our entities own social media (eLab, SAI etc), highlights of our alumni/their businesses and interesting/thoughtful information from the Ithaca/Cornell Community. Communication is important to us.  We are continually looking to improve both our ability to share information with you, but also to create avenues where you can connect with other members of the SAF Family.

Sincerely,

Michael Karangelen '90

4 Questions with... Kristen McClellan ('12)
Kristen McClellan ('12)

Alumni/Friends in the News

Former SAI Campus Promotions General Manager, Marissa Evans ('06)
Marissa Evans ('06)
made news when her company GO FOR IT, which featured a fashion focused photo sharing and styling app, was acquired by Rent the Runway in June.  Here's a news link to learn more.

Marissa stated to us, "I'm very pleased with the acquisition as I believe there is a natural fit between the Go Try It On audience and the Rent the Runway customer base. The experience of starting and running Go Try It On has been extremely rewarding for me professionally, I'm looking forward to this next chapter.

The attraction to business started with my days at SA where I ran Campus Promotions. I think the responsibility of running a small business while in college afforded me the ability to understand what I liked about business and working with teams. SA was a great place to get a flavor of how businesses worked, how to respond and build relationships with customers and how to set goals. It was my first real experience managing an organization, totally invaluable!"

SAF Trustees welcome Dan Cohen
Dan Cohen

Dan Cohen joined the SAF Family in 2008 as the Director of eLab.  At that time, eLab was a brand new entity created in partnership with E@C that brought a general business incubator to Cornell Students. eLab has grown from a pilot program (in 2008) looking to provide support to Cornell students with their start-up concepts to a strong and vibrant business acceleration program as evidenced in April's Demo Day.

Dan stated, "I am honored to join Student Agencies Foundation!  Attached, Being part of Student Agencies has been enriching personally and stimulating professionally.  The practical, entrepreneurial, get-it-done personality of SAI has been a great fit for me and our design, planning and execution of  eLab is the fruit of our work together.  And many more great things on the horizon..."

SAF Trustees welcome Kartik Das ('14)
Kartik Das '14

Kartik Das joined the SAF Family in 2011 as a manager for Campus Promotions and served as SAI President and member of the SAI and SAP Board of Directors in 2012.

Student Agencies has a long tradition of Foundation   Membership for the SAI President upon his/her completed term.

Kartik stated, "Being a part of Student Agencies Foundation facilitates an opportunity to continuously support the organization and the people that have made such a profound impact on my years at Cornell. I hope to be able to learn from both present members and those to come."

SAF Trustees welcome Dana Lampert ('08)

Dana Lampert joined the SAF Family
Dan Lampert '08
as the first student member of eLab.  Dana graduated in 2008 and has since become a successful entrepreneur, an active mentor to current eLab students and a member of the eLab Board of Managers.

Dana stated "In 2008, I had the first startup to go through the eLab program -- it was instrumental in helping me grow my concept from a class-project to a viable business opportunity.  Amongst the tangible pros of eLab, I primarily benefited from the mentorship and help with recruiting employees, marketing and testing the early product, and raising seed capital.  It was because of the eLab program that I made enough progress and had the confidence to turn down my corporate job offer and pursue my startup full-time. I'm thrilled to have opportunity to serve as a member of the Student Agencies Foundation -- I hope to be able to get my hands dirty working with student entrepreneurs to help them start and grow their companies."

SAF Trustees welcome Zach Shulman ('87, JD '90)

Zach Shulman '87, MBA '90
Zach Shulman joined the SAF Family in 2003 as a Member of the SAI Board of Directors. He currently serves as Chair of the eLab Board of Managers and is the Acting Director of E@C.

Zach stated "I am truly honored to become a member of the Student Agencies Foundation. To me,  eLab is an important experiential learning opportunity for students on campus.  Student Agencies' support of eLab is a fantastic testament to its commitment to giving students a place to "do" entrepreneurship, both at the Student Agencies' businesses and with students' own initiatives."

Student Agencies, Inc (SAI) has a new CEO

It is our pleasure to welcome Kyle Karnes ('91) as the CEO of Student Agencies.  Kyle will be only the second full-time professional CEO in SAI's recent history, and we are very excited to have him join the Student Agencies Family. As CEO, he will be responsible for expanding and improving the delivery of SAI's educational mission.  And importantly, Kyle will also serve as 'mentor-in-chief' to our student managers, providing them day-to-day guidance and counsel.
