Message from Michael Karangelen, SAF President
Alumni & Friends,
It's almost hard to believe but we are half-way through 2013. During these past six months, we have tried to entertain, inform and connect you, our friends and alumni, with the work of SAF (and all of its entities) and to each other. Hopefully, we have been successful with this endeavor. Over the next 6 months, we will continue striving to improve this means of communication. We thank everyone who has taken the time to send us their feedback; your comments have been very helpful in crafting some of the upcoming alumni articles!
Before I close and suggest that you read the Newsletter in full, I'd like to take a moment and state that we are truly blessed to have an alumni base that is so passionate about SAF (and its entities). I see your passion in how many of you open the newsletter, answer an email from a current student or young alumni looking for guidance and the numerous other ways you stay involved. Each of you add to the strength of the organization and are appreciated.
Our Trustees and Board Members are alumni/friends who have volunteered to dedicate a consistent level of time and energy toward the mission of SAF (and its entities.) The Trustees and Board Members provide guidance, not only to the entities that they oversee, but also to the students involved in SAI, eLab and Popshop. This month, during the Annual Meetings, we elected three talented and dedicated individuals to become new members of the eLab Board of Managers or the SAI Board of Directors. We thank the new members (and current) for their time, energy and skills that they bring to their positions.
Sincerely,
Michael Karangelen '90
President

Tiding from Ithaca As you know, Cornell Reunion is a highlight for the month of June. Reunion 2013 had a landmark moment for SAF: eLab (which was founded in 2008) would have its first returning alumni group.
So on Saturday, June 8th, SAF held its first reunion reception which brought together SAI alumni, eLab alumni and current students from SAI, eLab and PopShop. Candid set-up shot! Current students (acting as hosts) created a beautiful table for the everyone to enjoy with appropriate yearbooks, local cheeses and wine. Once it was set - everyone took a moment to breath AND check their phones. Barry Weintrob ('60), Nick Nickitas (MBA '14) with Elizabeth Bitting, Michael Karangelen ('90) and Dana Lampert ('08)

June is an important month in our organization: SAF, eLab, SAP and SAI all hold their Annual Meetings during the week of Cornell Reunion. These meeting, while they contain serious business matters, are often a time for alumni to come together and spend time with other alums (and meet the new team of students.) We have a few photos: Taken during a break on Friday: Norman Turkish ('56), Lou D'Agrosa ('74), Sharon Dauk (MBA '89) and Barry Weintrob ('60) David Lesser ('87), Josh Eisenberg ('96), Nathaniel Weiss ('09), Adrian Madland ('99) and Dan Kathan ('70) were literally caught in the act.

Meet the New Board Members (professional bios can be viewed through their links)
eLab Board of Managers welcomes Steven Gal ('88)
Steven has been on the E@C Advisory Council for the more than a decade and is currently serving as its Chair. E@C is a collaborating partner with SAF in eLab and the upcoming eHub. He has also served as an eLab mentor since 2008.
Steven has been a very strong supporter of student entrepreneurs and providing experiential learning opportunities for them. He views his work on the eLab board as an extension of that work: "There is exploding demand from Cornell students for entrepreneurial experiences. Our customers want to start experiencing entrepreneurship now - while they are in school - when they can better afford to take some risks. They are seeing the startup careers of the students from the years ahead of them as examples. eLab was created to be a place where the best Cornell entrepreneurs can accelerate their businesses. eLab - and its [coming] new home, the new eHub - are the future of applied entrepreneurship - of actually doing entrepreneurship at Cornell. I am excited to help build it."
|
eLab Board of Managers welcomes David Lesser ('87, MBA '88) David served as SAI Real Estate Manager and CFO during his undergraduate tenure at Cornell. He has been a SAF Foundation Member since 1987.
David was nominated to the eLab Board for many reasons, but notably, for his superior work while he was at SAI and his commitment to the Foundation's mission. David has expressed the desire to support the entrepreneurial sprint that exists at Cornell by helping to build an even stronger eLab and supporting the eHub project.

SAI Board of Directors welcomes Matthew Wagner (MBA '09)
Matt served as JGSM Fellow for Student Agencies in 2008. One of his projects: creating the organizational structure for the Big Idea Competition that is now held each year during E@C's Celebration.
Matt states that he is looking forward to working with the student managers and helping to take a fresh look at the businesses: "Upon enrolling at Cornell University I knew I wanted to get involved with the Entrepreneurship community on campus. Student Agencies was a great way for me to leverage my experience and knowledge in an educational way through coaching, mentoring, and helping drive business direction. Now 4-years post graduation I am honored to continue my involvement and passion towards SAI as a board member. The overall experience Student Agencies provides to our student leaders is tremendous and a phenomenal career kick-start, I am humbled to be affiliated with the organization."

2014 SAI Presidential Recruiting
The term for the SAI President follows the calendar year (January - December), but recruitment and training of the incoming President actually starts in the spring semester. Traditionally, the SAI President is recruited from the pool of talented SAI student managers who understand the vast undertaking and commitment involved for the position. In May, the candidates undergo a formal application (with essays on themselves, their vision for SAI, etc) and interview process. As you would expect in an experiential learning environment, the process is rigorous, including interviews with the current student Executive team and CEO, staff and SAI Board Members.
We've asked Rob Ainslie ('14), current President of SAI to share an update on the recruiting process. Rob said that he viewed this process through the eyes of a mentor. He met with his managers over the course of the spring term and had conversations about their career goals, their internship paths and external commitments (like school.) When the time came for the team to apply for the 2014 Presidency, there were three extraordinarily strong candidates who threw their hat in the ring. Rob stated that each of the candidates provided thoughtful applications and survived over 10 formal interviews: "I was very proud of their preparation and eagerness throughout the entire process. The fact that it was such a difficult decision is a testament to their skills and dedication to Student Agencies. I'd like to share one highlight for each of them before we announce the 2014 President."

Turkel Anwar ('15) is a rising junior in CALS, majoring in Economics. He is the current GM for BRSS. Rob stated that under Turk's leadership, BRSS broke their appointment record for May Peak. This record had been previously held by the BRSS Management team of Andrew Chatman ('12), former SAI President, and Michael Barnett ('11).
|
Laura Furman ('15) is a rising junior at ILR and currently serves as Campus Promotions GM. Rob stated that while CP is just heading into their Peak season right now, Laura has been instrumental in building new (and straightening existing) relationship both within the Cornell community and with CP customers.
|
Patricia McTiernan ('14) is a senior in CALS, majoring in the Communication Arts and currently serves as the Real Estate Manager. Rob stated that Patricia is overseeing a significant renovation project for our multi-bedroom apartments that will be culminating this Fall. This project involved determining the scope of work, selecting/managing the contractors and providing timely updates to the Real Estate committee and Board of Directors.
