Message from Michael Karangelen, SAF President

Alumni & Friends,

In the past, communication from the Student Agencies Foundation (SAF) has been episodic. Today, we begin our ambitious attempt to launch a consistent, monthly newsletter for the alumni and friends of Student Agencies, Inc., eLab and entities of the Student Agencies Foundation. I hope that you will take a moment each month and read the news from Ithaca and across the SAF realm.  In addition, please take a moment to offer us your comments - both positive and critical. We are learning as we go (even when we become board members.)

In our January issue, you will meet the new SAI team and learn about upcoming events:

  • Adrian Madland ('99) has a long history with SAI both as a student when he served as CFO in 1999 and an alumnus when he joined the SAI Board of Directors in 2009. This past September, Adrian was elected to serve as Chairman for the SAI Board of Directors.   Adrian's impact and contribution to Student Agencies and its Mission have been substantial, and I am confident that his leadership will not only drive SAI far forward but will also inspire SAI's managers and officers to develop into outstanding talents.
  • We are pleased and honored that Julie Delay (MS '94) agreed to join the SAI Board of Directors in Fall 2012. Julie is the HR Director for the College of Engineering, Computing and Information Science, and Cornell NYC Tech. She may be a little embarrassed that I am mentioning this, but when we were getting to know Julie, we were told time and time again by officials at Cornell that she is one of the "rock stars" in Cornell's administration. When Cornell has a problem or new challenge in human resources, Julie's name always surfaces as the person who can get it done. Nevertheless, I am sure she believes that her greatest achievement is her daughter, Annelise Sheupbach ('14), who is SAI's Human Resources Director and an outstanding leader within the company. Julie will share her expertise with Nancy Humphries, Nathaniel Weiss ('09) and the SAI Compensation Committee.
  • Thomas Schryver ('93, MBA '02) is SAI's new Interim GM. Tom is currently splitting his time between SAI and Cornell, where he services as the Entrepreneur-in-Residence. We are very happy to have Tom join the SAI family; he brings a strong financial, entrepreneurial and teaching background to this position. It would not be an easy task for anyone to follow Dan Kathan ('70, MBA '73) as SAI GM; but the students have skillful hands to guide them during this transition. Learn more about Tom and the current Ithaca agenda in his article.
  • Meet the incoming SAI Management Team: we are very proud of the Team that Rob Ainslie ('14) has assembled.

In addition, I am looking forward to our February eNewsletter when we will introduce the new student teams of eLab.

Sincerely,

Michael Karangelen '90

A Very Special End of Year Dinner

John Thomas, indicates both a restaurant AND an event to the students and staff of Student Agencies.  Fall is a time of transition, where the on-boarding managers work and train along side of the current SAI management team. In December, the two teams, staff and mentors gather at John Thomas to celebrate their triumphs, re-live their challenges and enjoy a night of camaraderie and good food.

This December was a little different; Dan Kathan had just announced his retirement as SAI's CEO/Mentor to become Managing Director of SAF. Several of SAI's immediate past presidents drove/flew into Ithaca to join the 2012-2013 teams and staff.  Click here to view photo alumn!

Meet the new Chair of SAI Board of Directors - Adrian Madland

Adrian Madland ('99) has been involved with Student Agencies since 1998 when he served as CFO under our newly-hired CEO, Dan Kathan ('70, MBA '73). Adrian resumed a leadership role when he joined the (SAI) Board of Directors in 2009.  In his non-SAI life, he works at Google in Sales Operations & Strategy for Motorola, lives in the San Francisco area with his wife, Heather (Hollidge) Madland ('99) and dog Wilhelmina.

In the March 2013 issue, Adrian will be sharing some of 2013's key goals and the work the board does with/for students and alumni.

Meet the new member of SAI Board of Directors  - Julie Delay

As Michael Karangelen '90 stated in his opening remarks, Julie Delay is the Director of Human Resources for the College of Engineering, Computing and Information Science, and Cornell NYC Tech. She wanted to say a quick HELLO to the SA Alumni and friends:

"It is an honor to join the SAI community. The employment and leadership opportunities available to students are tremendous. As a human resources professional, I appreciate the unique experience SAI offers at a formative stage of a student's career. The chance to contribute to their success is a privilege. The support so many SAI alumni provide to encourage students is impressive and I look forward to meeting many of you in New York City and elsewhere."

Meet SAI's interim GM - Thomas Schryver

Greetings from Ithaca!

Most, if not all of you are aware that a major shift happened in the life of Student Agencies, Inc this past fall: 1) Dan Kathan retired from his position as CEO at SAI and transitioned to Managing Director of SAF and 2) the SAI board has undertaken a nationwide search for his replacement.

As alumni/friends of Student Agencies, I know you are invested in the future of this organization and that you may be curious as to my background and my role during this interim period.

Who am I?
