Message from New SAF President
Michael Karangelen

A Personal Note

I must admit that I am humbled, honored and, at the same time, excited to be addressing you for the first time as the President of the Student Agencies Foundation. Student Agencies and its mission have been an important part of my life for nearly a quarter of a century. My early days of involvement at SAI as an agency manager and then as the company's President allowed me as a student to gain a greatly accelerated understanding of entrepreneurship, finance and the principles of business operations. I made many, many mistakes during my time working at SAI, but the investment that SAI (by my mentors namely Barry Weintrob ('60), Lou D'Agrosa ('74, '75 MBA), Sharon Dauk ('89 MBA), Dionisio D'Aguilar ('86, '87 MBA), Peter Everett ('87, '90 MBA), David Lesser ('87, '88 MBA) and Holly Zook) made in me to permit me to make those mistakes was invaluable. As a member of the Board of Directors of SAI for more than 20 years, I have endeavored to "pay it forward" to other Cornell students by mentoring them through the same opportunities that were made available to me.

eLab - history and status

Background

In 2007, Student Agencies Foundation and E@C expressed a mutual desire to create an outlet for entrepreneurial students at Cornell to pursue their business interest in Ithaca. Student Agencies Foundation had long supported student exploration into the 'real life' of business ventures, and E@C works with all campus schools, colleges, and organizations to help create and promote entrepreneurship education, events, commercialization, and experiential learning opportunities. The two organizations brought resources in the forms of networking, expertise and funding to a pilot program which would serve as a business incubator for Cornell's entrepreneurial students. eLab 1.0 was launched in 2008.

SAF is pleased to announce the formation of......eHub
eHub:
roughly 5,400 square feet of modern business, collaborative working and mentoring space in the heart of Collegetown; the new "center of gravity" for Cornell's entrepreneurial activity in Ithaca, NY.

Background

For well over a decade, Student Agencies has enjoyed a growing and increasingly impactful collaboration with E@C to deliver its core mission of providing experiential learning to Cornell students. Throughout Student Agencies' history, SAI (Student Agencies, Inc.) has been the primary vehicle for delivering experiential learning about business and entrepreneurship. SAI became excellent at teaching students the "blocking and tackling" of running a business.   Survey feedback from our recent alumni was uniformly high in praising the "transformative value" of the SAI experience, but increasingly the Board of Directors of SAI and the Trustees of the Student Agencies Foundation recognized that the student experience at SAI, while extraordinarily rich, was less entrepreneurial than in the past and that simultaneously more and more students across campus were interested in starting their own businesses. As a consequence, Student Agencies decided to broaden the delivery of its mission. The initial manifestation of that decision was eLab, which was launched as a pilot program in 2008 (see article on eLab).
