Caring for the Caregiver
There is more than one patient in cases of Alzheimer's disease and dementia

The United Latino Caregivers project has its roots in the United Community Center's Latino Geriatric Center, which opened in 2007 to serve individuals with physical difficulties, Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. In Spanish, the program is called "Los Cuidadores Latinos Unidos."

In a brainstorming session centered around health disparities, the research team, including Al Castro of the United Community Center and Melissa DeNomie of the Medical College of Wisconsin, developed a new project focusing on Latinos who provide care for elderly relatives.

Full Proposal Forms

Full Proposal forms are now available on the Apply for Funding webpage.

Typically the strongest partnerships do not stop meeting while waiting for an invitation to proceed to full proposal. It can take many months to work out the detailed aspects of a project through a collaborative process.

Partnerships that submitted an Impact or Development LOI are encouraged to begin working on the content of their full proposal - even before notification occurs.
If you are not invited to submit a full proposal, you can use that work to likely apply to other funding sources.

Registration is Now Open!

Community Health Informatics Workshop
Sponsored by the
Community
Engagement Key
Function of CTSI

A Community Health Informatics workshop will be held on Thursday, May 30th from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the UW - Milwaukee School of Continuing Education in downtown Milwaukee. Check-in will begin at 8:00 AM.

The goal of the workshop is to create a roadmap for how informatics can address important public and personal health intervention efforts at the community level. The Community Health Informatics Workshop will be an interactive, full-day event that seeks to establish a common language and priorities for future development between community based organizations, community engaged researchers and information scientists.

By participating in this workshop, community and academic collaborators will:
  • Have an opportunity to network among community based organizations and local researchers interested in collaboration on existing and new initiatives focusing on information technology
  • Showcase community health informatics projects currently in use or under development
  • Have an opportunity to shape a shared set of priorities for the development of future community informatics projects using non-technical language that is accessible to all participants

For additional information or to register to attend, please visit the Workshop Webpage. Registration will remain open until Friday, May 24th.

  • If you are a member of CTSI, you will need to log in to register for the workshop.
  • If you are not yet a member of CTSI, you are welcome to join (link available in upper right corner of CTSI webpage) and then register for the workshop.

If you have any additional questions regarding the workshop, please contact Mia DeFino at 414.955.5754 or [email protected]

Opportunity for COMMUNITY Partners
Coaching Conference Calls

The Community Network for Research Equity & Impact emerged from the 2011 and 2012 National Community Partner Forums co-sponsored by Campus Community Partnerships for Health (CCPH) and the Center for Community Health Education Research and Service. The Community Network's mission is to ensure that communities have a significant voice in decisions about research practice and policy, are true partners in research, and fully benefit from the knowledge gained through research.

The Community Network is excited to announce a free monthly series of coaching conference calls for community partners who are considering or already engaged in research partnerships with academic partners. Community partners include individuals who are community activists, community organizers, patient advocates or staff or volunteers with community-based organizations or patient advocacy organizations.

The calls respond to needs expressed by community partners from across the country for low-cost, easy ways to access confidential coaching, advice and support from their seasoned peers. The Community Network is  eager to support community partners in successfully navigating the issues and challenges that can arise in community-academic research partnerships. Whether dealing with conflicts around a budget issue, disagreements about how study findings will be disseminated, tensions over the community's role as adviser vs. decision maker, etc., they are there to help!

Facilitating the calls will be Ann-Gel Palermo, CCPH board member and Chair of the Harlem Community and Academic Partnership, who may be joined from time to time by other experienced Network members.

The calls are offered on the following Mondays from 4-5:30 pm ET:
  • April 22
  • May 13
  • June 17
  • July 15
  • August 26

Each call will be limited to 10 people in order to maximize participation. To apply to participate in a coaching call, community partners should simply complete this form no later than the Friday before the call you would like to join: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/ccphirb/198512
