April 2016

Greetings!

Who knew that the metaphorical April showers could be snow showers? In the future, we need to be more specific about this, or the May flowers are going to have a really hard time of it. At least we can sit snugly in the Schoolhouse with the protection of our new, weather-repellent windows. Some folks may wax nostalgic for the days of snowdrifts in the window sills and invigorating breezes in the office, but that seems unlikely. That having been said, it's impossible to predict what might tickle the fancy of our volunteers (or our listeners, for that matter). A great deal of the beauty of community radio is learning to appreciate the differences among us. Even when they're nuts.

Knock Knock

Like a funny joke that you've heard a million times before, pledge drive is here once again to put smile on all our faces. It's our opportunity to pay a few bills, of course, but it's also a great chance to reconnect with bunches of our listeners and volunteers. There's always a buzz of activity as a plethora of dedicated people parade through the office to help us deliver our message.

It's always exciting to have long-time supporters find new ways of participating in the project. This time around, our friends at Jobi Pottery have graciously agreed to produce special limited edition mugs that we're able to offer as thank you gifts to our sustaining contributors. Owner/designer Susan Kurtzman continues the tradition of creativity at Jobi that began in Truro in 1953. Stop by the shop next to Savory on Route 6 in Truro to see the whole line and share some community radio camaraderie.

Fresh Blood

We don't think of ourselves as being particularly vampiric, yet we're always energized when new folks take on crucial roles in the organization. Such is the case as we welcome new Underwriting Representative Steve Kleinberg to the team. Steve brings a wealth of experience in marketing, leadership and community activism to his role in helping the station attract the support of local businesses. Steve joins Tony Pasquale on the underwriting beat. Many thanks to Tony for his years of hard work in supporting the station, and kudos to Steve for bringing a fresh perspective on things. Email [email protected] or call 917-699-3784 to be come an underwriter of this fine station.

We also extend a hearty how-do-you-do to new member of the Board of Directors Tony Pierson. Tony has been an enthusiastic listener to the station for years and now finds himself with the time to offer more than the use of his ears. We have to admit, we don't entirely understand Tony's professional background, but it apparently involved managing very large assets for corporate and pension plan clients. Our assets are still very modest here at the station, but it is pledge drive time (hint hint). Tony also brings a charming British accent to the table, so that's sure to lighten up the Board meetings from time to time.

Show Time

We are pleased to announce a new phase in our relationship with The Provincetown Theater. While we have always worked with our near-neighbors to promote each other's good works, new Executive Artistic Director Tristan DiVincenzo came knocking with some brilliant ideas about how to further combine our creative strengths. The Provincetown Theater will present a series of plays produced by CTEK Arts running from July through October in the Davis Space at The Schoolhouse. In order to prepare the space to suit their needs, Tristan and his team will be painting the Davis Space, installing risers to facilitate theater seating, and updating the stage lighting. We look forward to seeing the results of the facelift and seeing what the theater presents as they hone their reputation for being on the cutting edge of performing arts in Provincetown.

Outermost Radio: The Film

We are pleased to announce that the award-winning documentary about the station by Parallax Productions is now available to rent or own at Vimeo. Parallax is generously donating a portion of the proceeds to WOMR. Hear the story of our plucky little station straight from the horse's mouth. We leave it to you to figure out which one's the horse.

Good Question

Those who saw them at CranJam last year know that Good Question bring some serious chops to the stage. These precocious youngsters will be sharing their gift with the world once again this Saturday, April 9, at Wellfleet Preservation Hall at 7pm. We're thrilled to pair them up with one of the Cape's best vocalists in Chev Hardy. Chev has established herself as a jazzy chanteuse of the first order, while Good Question are well on their way to making their own waves in the musical world. Come on out and share the vibes and look into the future.

Pop Goes the Market

Our friends at the East End Market, conveniently located out our back door at the corner of Bradford and Howland, have agreed to donate a portion of sales from April 15-17 to WOMR. The Market has awesome sandwiches for lunch as well as a wide range of beverage options. They've even got beer and wine as well as a seasonal license to sell liquor. Drop by the Market that weekend or any time you're in the neighborhood and thank them for their support of community radio.

Train For Glory

It's not too late to start training and it's certainly not too late to register for the 2016 edition of the Wellfleet Sprint Triathlon. The beautiful race in a beautiful place runs on Saturday June 4 at Long Pond in Wellfleet. Race Director Kathleen Walker is set to make the event better than ever in her second season at the helm. Get in touch with us in the office if you'd like to sponsor what has become the signature event on our fund raising calendar.

Programming Notes

After bouncing around the schedule a bit, and serving as one of our super subs, Fred Boak has taken up residency on alternate Sunday afternoons from 1-4. Tune in for a little gospel brunch and everything else the Omnipop Omnibus has to offer. Tune in Friday April 8 from 7-9pm to hear new DJ Dean Moran serve up his Shark Sandwich. Michelle Crone, Candace Hammond, Bragan Thomas, and Ray Wiggs continue in their roles as interim hosts of Arts Week Thursdays at 12:30pm.
