February 2016

Greetings!

Top o' the mornin' from the tip o' the Cape. What a wild, weird and wonderful off-season it's been so far. March is right around the corner, which means that the first of the snowbirds will soon be returning to their summer playground. Meanwhile, we've been getting things done around the office in the relative quiet that is Provincetown in the winter. Don't let the rumors fool you - there's plenty of activity here year round. In addition to a super-celebratory New Year's party that included fireworks in Provincetown for the first time in years, the winter also marks contractor season 'round these parts. Outermost Community Radio played its part by getting our windows replaced just in time for some of the coldest weather in memory. Of course, just a day later, the thermometer tried to tickle the fifty-degree mark, so who knows what tomorrow may bring. The window project is all part of our strategic plan to get better each and every day. Now, what should we do next?

Look Ma! New Windows!

Huge shout out to the citizens of Provincetown for providing the bulk of the funds required for us to replace the windows throughout the Schoolhouse. The old windows lacked certain essential features such as keeping the wind out and being transparent. Thanks to the support of the Community Preservation Act, our new windows do all that and more. They even open and close like good windows should. Marvelous!

Pop-up wood shop in the Davis Space
It was great to have the company of Rupert, Buzz and Pepper (the dog) throughout the course of the project. It was quite the dance to get all the work done while staying on the air the entire time. There were tables saws, shop-vacs and scaffolds. Oh My!

Now that the installation team has done their work, we just need to get the windows painted and the project will be complete. Our team of planners and schemers is already hard at work setting priorities and developing strategies for what comes next.

Join us in celebrating International Women's Day with 24 hours of special programs on Tuesday, March 8. In addition to the fabulous women who regularly host shows on a Tuesday (Kathy, Paula, Carol, Canary and DJ B), we'll have a slew of special guests, interviews, comedy, call-ins and more. Kudos to Pandora Peoples and Dinah Mellin for leading the group that put the whole thing together. There will be poetry and world music, serious discussion about the issues and achievements of women in the world, and a lighter look at women comedians. There's sure to be something for everyone over the course of the day, much of it will be available for listening on demand at our website.

New Voices

Provincetown Town Manager David Panagore

With such a large crew of volunteers, it's inevitable that we are always saying goodbye to some while we welcome others into our broadcast family. January marked the final edition of Walt Gately's Jazz Plus program, which had aired on alternating Sundays from 1-4pm. Walt was a great servant of the station for quite a few years and we are grateful to have worked with him.

January marked the inaugural episode of David Panagore's Town Talk. David is the
The Dune Tramp
(relatively) new Town Manager of Provincetown and the show will air on the 1st Friday of each month at 9am. David invites listeners to call in with their questions and comments as he covers the issues of the day. January also found us playing host to a Dune Tramp for the first time. Not just any old Dune Tramp, but THE Dune Tramp. The Dune Tramp will be speaking with folks about the culture and traditions of the Outer Cape on the 3rd Friday of each month at 9am.

In other programming news, the team of folks recruited to fill the inestimable shoes of Howard Weiner have been settling in nicely. Mary Jane Byrne and Felice Coral have joined long-time volunteer Kent Isham in carrying on the tradition of Metropolitan Opera on WOMR/WFMR. Felice has also taken the chair in rotation with Reed Boland to host the Cafe Classicale program on Monday afternoons. Eliza Travisano's Local Remedy has moved to alternating Wednesday mornings at 9am, sharing time with Ray Brown's Talkin' Birds. Rhonda Litwinowich will begin her residency on the 4th Sunday night of each month at 9pm beginning on February 28. A big shout out to Fred Boak, Henry and Jane Fischer, Steve Shervanian, Gary Williams and the whole crew of subs who have filled in the for the variety of folks who have hit the road over the course of the winter. You may have already heard Dean Moran, Ashley Stancil, Abigail Depin and Tina Cusson on the microphone. They are just a few of the new volunteers who will be taking to the air in the near future. Show them the community radio love we're known for.

Party Like It's 1982

Other than the possibility of being 34 years younger, most of us probably would not prefer to go back to the early '80s, but that's when Outermost Radio took its maiden voyage. We'll be celebrating that momentous occasion when we get our groove on with The Rip It Ups on Saturday March 12 at the Elks Lodge in Eastham. The party starts at 5pm, so you'll have no problem getting home in time to watch The Love Boat.

Radio Meets The Movies

Brad Moore continues his legendary Fall and Winter Benefit Film Series this week when he shows Nanook Of The North on Thursday evening at 7:30. In addition to the captivating story and the astounding visuals, the film will feature the accompaniment of Dinah Mellin, April Baxter and a band of merry musicians performing live in the Davis Space. Come on by next Thursday, February 25, when Brad shows Broken Blossoms directed by D.W. Griffith. Ryan Cooke joins the fiesta of film when he invites everyone to his sing-along with West Side Story on March 20. More details to come on that one.

Outermost Poetry Contest

We wait with bated breath (which is much more tolerable than baited breath) for the announcement of the winners of the Outermost Poetry Contest. The submissions have all been received and delivered to the judges. The final decisions will come from eminent author and friend of the family Marge Piercy. The winning submissions will be available for your perusal on our website and the decorated poets will appear on the Poets' Corner radio show.

Volunteers Wanted

Now that we've got our shiny new windows installed, we need to get them finished. That means painting them (interior) and getting new blinds and/or curtains. Thanks to Margaret MacNeil of MFM Interiors for helping us with the shades. If you are a painting professional and would like to donate time or materials to help us get the job done, please get in touch with John in the office. john@womr.org
