Greetings!

The station lost a piece of itself this week when Howard Weiner lost his courageous battle with cancer. It's difficult to believe that someone of his vitality and enthusiasm could be taken from us. The station will be forever marked by his contributions and his memory will live on. We'll miss him very much.

And now it's autumn on Cape Cod. With the change of seasons, the breeze gets a bit more refreshing, the light gets even more stunning and the color of everything just pops out. While there are challenges presented by the seasonal nature of our economy, it also presents us with a number of unique opportunities. The calm of the off-season allows us to do some things that aren't possible in the rush of high season.

Any day now work will begin on replacing all the windows in the Schoolhouse thanks to a grant from Provincetown Preservation Fund. With the help of a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, we are looking at all aspects of the building to make it a more effective resource for the entire community. We are simultaneously engaged in a strategic planning process funded by the Cape Cod 5 Charitable Foundation Trust that will help the organization stay strong for many years to come. We welcome your input to this process, and we invite you to fill out the survey to tell us what you think. There are also plenty of chances to attend a social. Check out what's going on, and come up and see us some time.

Howard Weiner

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Howard Weiner. Howard was a member of our family for well over 20 years as the host of Cafe Classicale and the WOMR Opera House. More recently, Howard hosted the live broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera from New York. His enthusiasm for the repertoire was irrepressibly contagious, and he was able to connect with listeners in a unique and engaging manner. He knew many of the principal performers personally, and his knowledge of the material was such that he was able to send production notes to the sources of the broadcasts when he would catch errors that had gone previously unnoticed. Even folks who
In the studio at Center Street
were not fans of opera couldn't help but be entranced by Howard's explanations of the plots and his pronunciation of the titles. In Howard's honor and out of respect to the many fans of opera and the tradition of classical music on WOMR, we fully intend to keep the WOMR Opera House and Cafe Classicale on the air. Anyone who would like to volunteer to help us on that mission should contact Matty in the office.

Vinegrass Party

Parsonfield

After hosting an astonishingly good roots music festival for a couple of years running at Truro Vineyards, it's hard to call Vinegrass the new kid in town anymore. WOMR has been proud to be a part of that party, and we're even more excited to partner with Pete and Monica of Vinegrass to present Parsonfield at W.H.A.T. on November 12. Join us as these masters of newgrass take the stage at 8pm to show how old-time music thrives in the 21st century by incorporating the influence of pop and rock music. Prepare to get your groove on to the sound of banjos and mandolins in the hands of people who know what to do with them. Even if you're not familiar with the band (look them up at their website), the track record of the good folks at Vinegrass should tell you that they know about young bands on the move. Come check out the show and you'll be able to say you knew about Parsonfield when....

Your Station Needs You

These things tend to go in phases, and we're heading in to a stretch when we'll be a little short-handed. A number of our volunteers do extensive traveling in the winter, and some of the folks who have been stalwart substitutes in the past now have regular shows of their own. Our station is only as strong as the people who make it go, and we'd love for you to be one of the voices that our listeners come to love. No experience is necessary. We'll give you everything you need to become a star. All you need to do is show up and bring the love. Call the office or email Matty at matty@womr.org to get started.

Women's Week

There's always something fun going on at the Schoolhouse, and this week brings the festivities of Women's Week. DJ Char will be hosting a parade of performers through the Davis Space during her show from 9:30am-12:30pm on Wednesday October 14. You can be a part of the live studio audience, or you can tune in on the radio to find out who's in town for the occasion.

Business As Usual

The annual business meeting of Lower Cape Communications takes place on Saturday November 21 from noon to 3pm upstairs at Napi's Restaurant in Provincetown. The report of the nominating committee has already been filed, and any at-large nominations to the Board of Directors should be made to Chris and John in the office as soon as possible.

Benefit Film Series

Thanks to some coverage in the local newspapers and magazines, Brad's Fall and Winter Benefit Film Series is off to a great start. Of course, there's always a fine feature film, and there's often live musicians accompanying the film, so that helps. This Thursday at 7:30 in the Davis Space at The Schoolhouse, you can catch a Laurel and Hardy double feature, and October 22 will screen Vampyr and a film co-directed by Salvador Dali. Brad always has something great for Halloween week, so stay tuned to find out what's on tap.

Raging Skillet

Tickets are on sale now for an event that you will not want to miss. Our very own Chef Rossi has a new book, The Raging Skillet: The True Life Story of Chef Rossi - A Memoir With Recipes, Join us on Sunday, November 22 at Wellfleet Preservation Hall as we nosh and shmooze to celebrate her achievement. There will be books and vittles.
