June 2015

Greetings!

On your marks. Get set. Do the shing-a-ling. Or the watusi. Or whatever it is that gets you going. It's go time here on Cape Cod. All (or most) of the plans have been laid, and it's time to see those plans come to fruition. There's something big and exciting happening nearly non-stop from now until Columbus Day and beyond. Such is the rhythm of life in a heavily seasonal world. Luckily, most of us are well rested after having been stuck in the house for most of February and March, so we're ready to get to work double time while the getting is good. Whether at a concert, a triathlon or a festival, we look forward to seeing all your smiling faces somewhere around the Cape over the next few months.

Race For Radio

As unlikely as it might seem (have you seen us?), the Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon has become one of the major fundraisers on our events calendar. Our new race director Kathleen Walker is looking to take the event to the next level this year by expanding the appeal of the race beyond our current friends and family. Join us on Saturday June 20 at Long Pond in Wellfleet for the event which features a 3 mile run, a 1/4 mile swim and a 10 mile bike ride through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. The race beings at 7am with registration open at 5:30. You can pre-register online and get more information at lowercapetriathlon.org. Thanks to the sponsors of the event: Bubala's, Cahoon Hollow Massage, Bookstore Restaurant, Roderick's Payroll, Seamen's Bank, Sperry Chiropractic, and the Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce, I Can Dig It.

Film-tastic

For many years, WOMR has been proud to sponsor the Provincetown International Film Festival. This year, we're not only sponsoring the event, but we're the star of one of the films. Alan Chebot and the crew at Parallax Productions made a feature film that sheds new light on several of the characters that make up the menagerie here at the Schoolhouse. It was a labor of love that started with Lady Di and included the nearly tragic collapse of our tower on Mt. Gilboa. We had a blast at the first showing of the film at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater back in April, and now we get to strut our stuff again in June. The Festival is showing the film with a reception on Thursday June 18 at Wellfleet Preservation Hall. The film will also be screened in the grand setting of Provincetown Town Hall on Sunday June 21. Festival passes and individual tickets are on sale now.

Dig The Daggers

People have suggested that we ought to throw more parties. You don't have to ask us twice, so we're putting together a casual gathering outdoors at the Eastham Elks Club Pavilion on Sunday June 28 from 3 to 6pm. The Daggers were the break-out hit of last year's CranJam in Harwich, and the Elk's Club served as fine hosts of the WOMR birthday party the last couple of years, so this should prove to be two great tastes that join together to form a flavor of epic proportions. Pretty much everything the Daggers do is larger than life, so we're not going too far out on the limb here. We're even gonna make sure that there's a few munchies in the house to help soak up some of the good time that will be had. We're not sure if it'll be burgers or pizza, but we're pretty sure that it won't involve anything too exotic, so don't expect any emu fricassee.

Outer Cape Concierge

If you're still looking for something to do, look no further than the community events calendar on our website. It's loaded with music, theater, talks and walks for young and old alike. There's even a form where you can submit an event that isn't already there. It's just one of the ways you can spend a little time with WOMR on the web. Don't forget to check out our archive of recorded shows too. The music shows are archived over at Radio Free America for two weeks from the time of broadcast. The internet isn't just for cat pictures anymore.

Rock Showcase

This Saturday June 6 at the Brewster VFW, WOMR and Side B Deeper Cuts present a very special hard rock showcase. Kyle Chrigwin, the host of Side B Deeper Cuts, has assembled some monsters of the local rock scene who are gonna turn it up starting a little after 7pm. G Orca Limbo Jones of the AOR show will be the master of ceremonies as Verscythe headlines the show which will be opened by Aural Assault and Lights Out. Although we're always impressed with the diversity of the community radio audience, this will not be like anything else we've done recently. Thanks to Kyle for stretching our genre-bending nature just about as far as it can go.

David Sedaris

Shawn Nightingale Productions is bringing David Sedaris to Provincetown Town Hall for two shows on July 29 and 30, and Shawn has generously offered WOMR members a special opportunity to get tickets. Individuals who become new or renewing members will get the opportunity to buy tickets to the show for a 20% discount. Folks who have seen David before know that the show is not to be missed, so call Chris in our office today to renew your membership and get your discounted tickets to the show. We're not math majors, but with tickets priced from $75-$125 you could save a pretty penny by getting yours via WOMR.

More To Do

Tom Rush: No Regrets

In addition to everything else going on around the Cape, we've got a few things scheduled for right here at the Schoolhouse. On Saturday July 11, we'll be showing the Tom Rush documentary "No Regrets." This documentary film explores the rich legacy of the iconic singer, songwriter and storyteller and features a guest appearance by James Taylor. On Friday June 26 in the Davis Space at The Schoolhouse, there will be a CD release party for Jim's Band. In addition to Jim Lucason, Jim's Band features a number of individuals known to the local authorities, including Dinah Mellin, Steve Morgan, Fred McGee, Bill Evaul and Alan Morehouse. There will be plenty of smiles and refreshments on hand, so come on out and have some.

Our friends over at the Payomet Performing Arts Center have put together a truly unbelievable line up of talent for your enjoyment this season. Their season got under way early with a few shows at the Elks Club in Eastham and it really kicks into gear the weekend of June 20-21 with The Stooges Brass Band on that Saturday and Los Lobos on Sunday. See the whole schedule of events at their website. Thanks to Kevin and his crew for making our neighborhood a better place to be. We're also thrilled to be a sponsor of the Wequassett Jazz Fest which begins on June 30 and runs through September 1.
