Greetings!

Well, hello sunshine. It's been a while since we've seen you. After a fairly devastating winter and a chilly spring, things are finally blooming around here. Even the most stubborn snowbanks won't stand a chance with the sunshine that's beaming down on us this week. Speaking of beaming, the active season is beaming up in a hurry this year after everyone shakes off the cabin fever that inevitably set in over the winter. We normally think of the season beginning on Memorial day, but this year the month of May is full of activity before we even get to that traditional mile marker. All of this as we bask in the glow of the world premiere of our feature film debut which took place last month at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater. There's never a dull moment around here, but you knew that already.

Outermost Radio:The Film

The crowd at the premiere of Outermost Radio:The Film

A fine night was had by all on Friday April 17 at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater as we enjoyed the premiere screening of Outermost Radio: The Film. In addition to many of our friends and family, the film maker Alan Chebot and his crew from Parallax Productions were on hand to receive their proper accolades for a job well done. The film was more than 3 years in the making and all of that hard work paid off with an outstanding final product. We can't be sure if it was the professional editing or special effects wizardry, but Parallax did a great job of getting our good side. Thanks to Cerise Bynoe for performing before the film and thanks to The Catbirds for raising a ruckus afterwards. Keep tabs on our Facebook page for a special announcement later this month about WOMR and the Provincetown International Film Festival. Among other things it looks like radio personality Matty Dread will once again play a part in the closing party for the festival on June 21. The film has been submitted to film festivals across the country, so we don't expect the swelling in our heads to go down any time soon.

Our Partners Present

In addition to presenting own productions, we are proud to partner with a number of other community groups to help promote their activities. We are especially pleased to support the Cape Wellness Collaborative and the Cape Cod Women's Music Festival. The Cape Wellness Collaborative is a new non-profit dedicated to improving access to integrative therapies for people with cancer on Cape Cod and the Islands. Organized by Sarah Swain, the Women's Music Festival takes place Sunday May 17 at the Cape Cinema in Dennis and feature great women in music for a great cause. We couldn't be happier to see Sarah taking the Festival and the Collaborative to new levels.

We are also honored to work with the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival in presenting the CranJam each September. This Friday May 8, the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music committee presents Peter Yarrow at Monomoy Regional High School. Fans will be familiar with Peter's work as part of the legendary folk group Peter, Paul and Mary. This is the first professional performance at the new, state-of-the-art facility on Oak Street in Harwich. Go to brownpapertickets.com for tickets or call 508-432-1885 for more info.

You Can Make It If You Tri

Join us on Saturday June 20 for the Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon. Swim, bike and run through the National Seashore in Wellfleet to benefit Outermost Community radio. This year marks a transition in the
management of the event as we say thank you to Myya Beck for all she's done to get the event up and running and we say hello to new event manager Kathleen Walker. The event would not be what it is today without Myya, and we look forward to the energy that Kathleen will bring as we take the event to the next level. Kathleen brings a wealth of experience in race management as well as marketing, so we're excited to work with her this year and into the future to make the event as successful as possible.

For Those Who Rock

In our ongoing effort to leave no stone unturned and no musical genre neglected, WOMR is proud to present a hard rock show at the Brewster VFW on June 6. DJ Special K, Kyle Chirgwin, has put together a bill that's sure to appeal to the leather jacket set featuring headliners Verscythe from New Bedford, Lights Out (a UFO cover band), and Aural Assault from Cape Cod. If you're not familiar with Kyle, you can check out his show Side B Deeper Cuts every Friday night at midnight following the AOR show. Kyle has been a dedicated late night DJ with us for more than 10 years, so it'll be good to see him work in the daylight hours. The mayhem begins at 7pm on June 6 at the Brewster VFW at 989 Freeman's Way.

Call For Volunteers

Have you been thinking about how much fun it would be to have your own radio show? It may be time to stop thinking and start doing. We have a number of regular slots available and even more opportunity for folks to be part of our team of substitute DJs that host shows on an irregular basis. There are spots open on alternating Monday nights from 9pm to midnight, alternating Tuesday evenings from 5-8pm and one Wednesday evening per month from 5-8pm playing bluegrass. Your road to fame begins by starting the training process with Matty. Call the office at 508-487-2619 or email matty@womr.org.

Volunteer Spotlight

Ryan Cooke

Have you met Ryan? If not, you're likely to hear him soon. Ryan is now the host of his own show, Reel Music, on alternating Saturday nights from 9 to midnight. Reel Music features movie soundtracks, library music and tunes that sound like they should have been in the movies. You can also hear Ryan sub on any number of shows and see him working as a volunteer at many station events. It's folks with energy like Ryan that give us hope for the future.

As we welcome new folks into the family, we say goodbye to others. Praise and gratitude go out to Mardi Steinau as she moves on to the next phase in her life. Mardi was a great volunteer for us over the years as she hosted her own midnight show and made guest appearances elsewhere on the broadcast schedule. Mardi was a particularly powerful voice for women's issues around the station as she participated in the International Women's Day celebrations and the Women's Week festivities. Best wishes as Mardi moves off Cape and back to America.

A little something for the effort?
