March 2015

Greetings!

Harrumph! We're not letting a little more snow slow us down. We'd never get anything done if we did, because it seems like the snow will never end. Nevertheless, we're keeping the faith that the weather will change at some point and going ahead with all of our plans for a smashing summer season. You remember summer, right? It's the time when we all get to play outside and the population of our peninsula multiplies exponentially. Given that March is looking the way that it does, we'll start with a few indoor activities to warm us up. We hit the ground running over the next few weeks as we embark on a year full of promise. We're very much looking forward to another year of making friends, making great radio, and helping to make this community a great place to be. Won't you come along for the ride?

International Women's Day

On Sunday March 8, Outermost Community Radio will join in the celebration of International Women's Day 2015 with a full day of special programs to mark the occasion. The committee has worked very hard to assemble an amazing chorus of voices to document the many achievements of powerful women throughout history, and to join hands in working towards a society that offers women a fair and equal chance of success. Join us for a full 24 hours of music, interviews and community-building. Stop by the Schoolhouse if you're in the neighborhood between 4 and 8pm and join the drum circle taking place in the Davis Space as we make a joyous noise for empowerment. Live and Wired Film Series

Some people say that we stopped making sense years ago. Others may question whether we ever made any sense at all. These philosophical issues aside, we are pleased as punch to partner with Wellfleet Preservation Hall on a new film series. Tony Scungilli of Squid Jigger fame and Vanessa Downing at the Hall have conspired to put together an evening of conviviality centered around two of our favorite things: movies and music. The Hall has got some top-notch technical equipment to ensure a premium listening and viewing experience. The room itself is beautiful and they have a full bar that may help to enhance your experience even further. There's been a whole slew of great concert films made over the years, and this new series will pick from the best and present them on an ongoing and sporadic basis. Stay tuned to find out what they show next.

Thinking Warm Thoughts

While a quick dip in the pond may not be the first thing on your mind right now, it may make you feel better to think about such things. The 5th annual Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon will take place on Saturday June 20 in Wellfleet. You can run, bike and swim to support community radio or you can form a team to divide and conquer the challenge
. If you're more moral supporter than athlete, you can sponsor an athlete as they sweat it out for you. Huge thanks to Myya Beck for taking the lead in organizing this event.

Support community radio.

It's more fun than shoveling.

I promise.

Poetry Party

The newly rechristened Joe Gouveia Outermost Poetry Contest is in the books, and we're having a confab to celebrate. The regional winners and those honorably mentioned will gather to read their works along with lead judge Marge Piercy at an event at Wellfleet Preservation Hall on Thursday April 2 at 7:30. Congratulations to Wilderness Sarchild and Ellen LaFleche for winning the regional and open divisions respectively. You can read the winning works on the WOMR website.

More Movie News

The weather has thrown a kink in Brad's movie plans a couple of times this winter. The movie that was scheduled to run Thursday March 5 has been postponed to Friday March 6 in the Davis Space at The Schoolhouse. That film, appropriately enough, is Nanook of the North. At the end of the month, don't miss the 6th annual Lon Chaney birthday bash featuring light hors d'oeuvres and a champagne toast.

By the time you read this, tickets may already be gone for the premiere of Outermost Radio: The Film. The celebrity tabloids are a-twitter in anticipation of the social event of the season at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater on Friday April 17. Although the event will sell out, there's sure to be a blistering secondary market for tickets to the must-see occasion, so those of you who already have tickets might consider the possibility of reaping an enormous return on your investment. There may never be an easier way to pay for a child's or grandchild's college education.

Rock With Us

It's gonna be our birthday this month and that means we get to do whatever we want. We're gonna have dessert before dinner, we're gonna stay up late and we're gonna listen to our music really loud. All right maybe we won't do any of that stuff, but could if we wanted to. What we're actually gonna do is the same thing we did last year on our birthday. We're gonna have a kickin' party at the Elks Lodge in Eastham with the Rip It Ups. There will be vittles and victuals from Fairway Restaurant, as well as raffles and all sorts of other fun. It all goes down on Saturday March 21 starting at 5pm. You know, because we can't actually stay up all that late anymore. We're 33 now.

Internet Is Awesome

Last month we told you about the new service we have that allows you to listen to any of our programs up to two weeks after they air. There are lots of other features on our website that may have escaped your attention. Tony and Matty have been producing a series of features on local musicians called Helltown City Limits. There are profiles of most of our volunteers, and what may just be the best events calendar on the Cape. Of course there's also an archive of every talk show that's aired in the last two years. It's better than cat videos. Maybe.
