January 2015

Greetings!

How did this happen? We've managed to get so far into the future that 1984 was more than 30 years ago. We went straight past George Orwell's apocalyptic vision of dystopia, to one inhabited by Michael J. Fox. Jules Verne's got nothing on us. We're just looking forward to settling in to watch a little holographic television while we enjoy a refreshing Tang. We've traded in our DeLoreans for Teslas and the war in Afghanistan is finally over (again). Of course, all progress comes with a little pain, so we pause to reflect on the social disruption brought about by the advance of modern technology. Someday the music industry will adjust to the brave new world that has so many people adopting community radio as a primary means of entertainment. Eventually record labels may even figure out how to market themselves in the computer age.

Now that's crazy future-speak.

Bragging Rights

Normally we use this space to tell you about events that we've got planned or big things that took place in the last month. Before we get to what we've got in store for the coming year, we'd like to thank some of the folks who made our achievements of the last year possible. For many years now, WOMR has enjoyed the support of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Although we would find a way to do what needs to be done without this support, our grant from the CPB makes it easier for us to get through the lean winter months. Thanks to a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council with matching funds from the Cape Cod 5 Foundation, we have begun the process of creating a long term strategic plan that will help us formulate goals and develop strategies for achieving them. A Community Preservation grant from the Town of Provincetown will help us make necessary repairs and improvements to our historic Schoolhouse. The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod awarded us a grant that helped to make the Harwich CranJam 2014 as successful as ever. Thanks to all of these organizations for supporting what we do and putting us in a position to do it even better.

Most especially, thanks go to our listeners for enabling us in our mission to be the voice and spirit of Cape Cod. From those of you who have repeatedly donated hundreds of dollars (or more), to those of you who can only afford a phone call, everything we do is because of you. Thanks also must go out to the volunteers who provide energy and vibrancy to the station. There would be no community radio without the talent and expertise that these amazing individuals bring to the office every day.

Songwriter's Retreat Concert

We're very excited to once again host the closing concert of the Cape Cod Songwriters Retreat. The retreat is led by David Roth, Sloan Wainwright, Reggie Harris and Cosy Sheridan and brings together a network of artists working together to explore their creativity and means of self-expression. The retreat itself extends over three days leading up to the concert on Sunday January 11 at 7:00 pm at The Schoolhouse, so there's bound to be a powerful blossoming of spirit. A portion of donations gathered from the event will go to benefit the station. Reserve your spot at the party now.

Fall and Winter Film Series

As winter rolls on, you always have a chance to catch one of Brad Moore's vintage films on Thursday nights in the Davis Space at The Schoolhouse. Click on the images below for more

2014 In Review

We would offer a review of 2015, but that would require powers of perception that we have not yet developed. It turns out there was plenty to talk about from 2014. We emerged from our winter's slumber just in time to celebrate our birthday with a smashing party at the Elks Club in Eastham featuring the Rip It Ups. April saw us complete the first of three amazingly successful pledge drives for the year. Our pledge drives are more efficient than ever, so thanks to the volunteers and listeners for making these more like a party than a necessary evil. In May, we hosted the first of two events that we produced at Town Hall in 2014. Lea DeLaria displayed the full range of her talents as she sang and joked her way into our hearts. We were thrilled to grow our partnership with the Provincetown International Film Fest by broadcasting live from their closing party in June. Also in June, people ran, biked and swam in Wellfleet to support the station in the Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon. Vintage Trouble blew the doors off Town Hall in July, demonstrating why they are one of the hottest bands in the country. Speaking of heat, WOMR once again partnered with the Orleans Police Department to be a part of the Orleans Block Party in August. It's truly an honor to bring the music to the people in the street with a police escort. We continued our tradition of bringing great music to Harwich in September at the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival, aka The CranJam. We nurtured our relationship with the Orleans Chamber of Commerce for a second year by collaborating on the ClamBQ at the end of September and the Santa Stampede in December. We strengthened our relationship with the Harwich Junior Theater in November by working together to produce a concert by multi-instrumentalist Jayme Stone.  All of this is over and above the fun that we've had on the air for every one of the last 32 years. With your help, we're gonna keep on doing it for another 32 and then some!

Call For Volunteers

We're always looking for folks who are interested in helping us do the (not so) heavy lifting of running the radio station. If you'd like to be a part of our Community Advisory Board, Events Committee, Program Committee or Development Committee, please contact Executive Director John Braden at john@womr.org or call the office at 508-487-2619. You can help determine the future of community radio on Cape Cod! If being on the mic sounds more like your style than being at the committee table, we're always looking for people with a passion for being a DJ. Contact Matty at matty@womr.org to take the first step on your path to becoming a global media phenomenon.

At The Controls

Welcome a couple of new programs to the air. Ray Brown's Talkin' Birds comes to WOMR on Wednesday mornings at 9am.
