December 2014

Greetings!

It's the most wonderful time of the year. We take a moment to reflect on all that we have to be grateful for and to think about those who have not been as fortunate. Like the rest of us, you have probably already received an avalanche of solicitations from a plethora of worthy organizations promoting Giving Tuesday and the tax benefits of year end donations. While we encourage you to consider giving to Outermost Community radio as you make your end-of-year financial plans, we also encourage you to remember that there are homeless and hungry among us. Check out some of the events listed below for a way to have fun, strengthen the bonds in our community and make the lives of the needy just a little easier. And if you can afford a little something extra, we hope you choose to give the gift of community radio to yourself or someone you love.

Make your pledge today. Thank you very much.

Christmas Cavalcade

It's been our very own Cape Cod Christmas tradition for close to a decade. Chandler Travis and a cast of thousands put together a variety show for the ages to benefit the NOAH shelter for the homeless in Hyannis. This year's Cavalcade takes place on Sunday, December 14 at the Jailhouse Tavern in Orleans at 7 pm. There will be kids of all ages, many of your favorite local bands, impromptu (and promptu?) conglomerations of musicians playing tunes outside of their normal repertoire, and just as many colorful sweaters as you could want to see. You can find out much more about the event at Chandler's website here. If you can't make it to the show in Orleans, Chandler and his Boston posse are doing their version of the show at Johnny D's in Somerville on Thursday, December 11 at 7:30 pm.

Yule For Fuel

The Fix-It-Sisters at Yule for Fuel

Along the same lines as the Christmas Cavalcade, but with a different cast of characters, the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater hosts the Yule for Fuel every Saturday night between now and Christmas. In fact, the two congregations collaborate on a smorgasbord of goodwill on Saturday December 13. Yule for Fuel features a different line up each Saturday night, so be sure to visit the WHAT website for all the details. There's bound to be someone you want to see in each of the shows, so maybe you should just go to them all. And the Cavalcade is on a Sunday, so you can go to that too!

Ernest Cooper Award

We are overflowing with gratitude for all the gifts that the last year brought us. Thanks to our (still relatively new) transmitter in Orleans and our continued outreach to the lower and mid-Cape, we have more listeners, members and volunteers than ever. A very special note of thanks must go to our past Station Manager, Rev. John Nelson. The Rev took the reins at a time when there were too many pots on the stove, and some of them had developed into full-on grease fires. His interim appointment ended up lasting more than two years, but he was able to leave an organization that was in infinitely better shape than the one he was called to lead. In honor of his contributions, Rev. John Nelson was recognized with the Ernest Cooper Award for Outrageous Support, the highest honor we can bestow on anyone in our organization. Thanks, Rev.!

A few more ducats gets us to our end-of-year goal.

Make your tax-deductible contribution today.

Joe Gouveia Outermost

Poetry Contest

If you fancy yourself a wordsmith, we've got something that may just tickle that fancy. The third annual Outermost Poetry contest has been renamed to honor the memory of its late founder, Joe Gouveia. Among his many credits, Joe was the host of Poets Corner on WOMR for many years. Poets Corner is now hosted by Neil Silberblatt and can be heard every other Monday at 12:30 pm. WOMR is proud to support the activity of the vibrant poetry community with the program and the contest. The deadline for submissions is December 15 and there's $1200 of prize money at stake. Get all of the details on how to submit your work here.

Call For Volunteers

Many thanks to Napi's Restaurant for once again hosting the annual meeting of Lower Cape Communications, Inc. (that's us!). A fine time was had by all as we did the business of electing Board members and getting reports on the activities of our various committees. As we start a new year, we need you to get involved with helping to do the work of running our business. There are openings on a number of committees that need to be filled by our listeners. If you'd like to be a part of our Community Advisory Board, Events Committee, Program Committee, Development Committee or get involved in any way, please contact Executive Director John Braden at john@womr.org or call the office at 508-487-2619. You can help determine the future of community radio on Cape Cod!
