October 2014

Greetings!

Executive Director John Braden
Did you hear that? I think it was the sound of the locals exhaling as we come to the end of another season. There are still a few big moments to enjoy, but October is definitely clutching at the straws of the receding summer memories. Looking forward, October is also the start of another business year for us here at the station. Preparations are under way for the annual meeting coming up in November, and plans are being hatched for another year of community radio fun. The outer Cape is abuzz with excitement about the upcoming Oysterfest weekend and Provincetown Women's Week. And if there were ever a holiday tailor-made for Provincetown, don't you think it was Halloween? There's never a dull moment around these parts.

Benefit Film Series Returns

One sure sign of Fall is the return of Brad Moore's benefit film series. No one knows old movies like Brad does, and he shares something from his collection most Thursday nights through the off season. There's beer and wine and popcorn too. Make a donation to support your community radio station and enjoy vintage movies on reel film. From time to time, the movies are shown with the accompaniment of live musicians for that authentic old-time silent movie ambiance. The clickety clack of the projector in the back of the room is also somehow reassuring, like having an apartment next to the elevated trains. Call us cray-cray -- you might be right.

Speaking of movies, anticipation is building for the international premier of the documentary film about our little station. Alan Chebot and his team from Parallax Productions have been working hard for more than 3 years trying to make all of us look good and tell the story of WOMR. It's actually surprising that it hasn't taken longer to find our good side, but it's a tribute to his talent as a film maker. Look for more announcements in the coming months, but we can expect a big foofaraw in the spring of 2015.
Women's Week

As has become our tradition, WOMR will once again be a part of Women's Week in Provincetown. Not only will Char be hosting a parade of performers in the studio on her show on October 15 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, we will also be broadcasting live from the UU Meeting House on Friday October 17 from 7-9 pm.  Michelle Crone is producing the Really Big Show on Friday night, and we're on pins and needles waiting to see who shows up. Neither event is very tightly scripted in advance, but you can expect a who's who of the performers who will be in town that week. We just hope that the comedians remember to stay within the standards required for a family broadcast. Fingers crossed!
Annual Meeting

If movies and variety shows aren't your idea of fun, perhaps we can interest you in our annual corporate business meeting. This year's meeting will take place at Napi's Restaurant at 7 Freeman Street in Provincetown on Saturday, November 22. Complimentary lunch will be served at noon with the meeting to begin at 1 pm. Everyone is invited to the meeting, and ballots will be sent out to the voting members of the corporation next week. If you don't receive your ballot by the end of the month and you think that you are entitled to vote on corporate business, please contact Chris in the office. Among other points of business on the agenda, Board members Fred Boak, Chuck Cole, Carol Courneen, Terry Ryder and Bob Weiser will be up for re-election. Many thanks to Napi's Restaurant and their staff for hosting us for all these years.
It's kinda like the red phone in the president's office, without the impending nuclear destruction

Poetry Contest

Words, words, words. Apparently some them are better than others. you're invited to see if yours are any good with your entry to the outermost poetry contest. Once again Marge Piercy will be our celebrity judge. Poets Corner host Neil Silberblatt will be the organizational leader this year, stepping into the space left by the late Joe Gouveia. We have renamed the contest in honor of Joe, who put so much love and labor into the poetry community on Cape Cod. Get all of the details on how to submit your work here.

Jayme Stone

You can catch the latest project of Jayme Stone coming up in the first week of November. Jayme and his band will interpret some of the works collected by pioneer Alan Lomax. The show will take place on Friday November 7 at the Harwich Junior Theater. Tickets are on sale now at womr.org.

New contributors

Speaking of literary things, we have a new contributor to the airwaves who will be sharing her stories with us. Allison Baker Rilling sent us a few samples of her work and it was clear to all of us right away that she had what it takes to be one of us. Not that we want to damn her with faint praise. Her short pieces will begin airing shortly on Saturday mornings in amongst our other programs.

There are a couple of other small bits that will begin getting some airtime in the near future. Nicole Cormier's Radio Brunch made a brief appearance over the summer, and she is coming back with more pieces on the topic of healthy eating this fall. We'll be getting updated on the world of environmental science by Climate Connections from the group that used to give us Our Ocean World. We need to acknowledge the importance of the environment to our community and this fits the bill.
