Greetings!

Executive Director John Braden
Pinch us, slap us, poke us if you must, but whatever you do don't wake us up. Things are so fantastic around here, we must be dreaming. The summer pledge drive wrapped up on time and on budget thanks to the team effort of listeners, volunteers and staff alike. Thanks a million billion to everyone for keeping this ship afloat. We now move on to everyone's favorite time of year on the Cape. It's more than a little easier to get around on the streets, there's no problem finding room on your favorite stretch of beach and the sunlight comes in at an angle that reminds us why Provincetown is an art colony. There's also plenty of arts and culture still to be absorbed before things slow down for the off season. And of course, your community radio station keeps right on truckin' with our signature blend of free-form music and information programming. If you can't join us in person for some of the fun (or even if you can), you can always turn on your radio and feel like you're part of the family.

We Be Jammin'

It's time for another good old-fashioned hoe down. We are proud to once again partner with the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival for two days of fun coming up this weekend at Brooks Park in Harwich. We'll have a whole bunch of local musical talent on the big stage under the big top on the ball field, there will be food trucks serving up some tasty vittles, and the park will be chock full of crafters and artists from near and far purveying their wares. The whole event is FREE as can be, so bring the whole family and stop by for as long or as little as you like. Saturday's fun begins with a couple of programs designed to put a smile on the face of the young and young-at-heart and gradually works itself up to a full-on blues and rock throw down. The whole show will run from 11am to 6:30 on Saturday and from noon to 5 on Sunday. All of the musicians are already friends of the station and have agreed to play for less than their usual rock-star wages, so come on out and make them feel as good as they should.

In addition to the fines tunes on offer on Sunday, we'll be announcing the winner of our night out in Boston raffle. The package includes airfare on Cape Air from Hyannis or Provincetown to Logan, a night at the Sheraton Boston and a pair of tickets to the Red Sox-Rays game on Thursday September 25. The winner doesn't even have to go to the Red Sox game if they don't want. Chances to win are $10 a piece or 6 for $50.
All Rise

Welcome aboard to the newest member of the Board of Directors, Bruce Bierhans. Thanks go to departing Board member James Paul Ludwig for his years of service as he leaves to pursue other interests. Bruce has been an active member of the outer Cape community for quite some time, having served on the Boards of the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, Outer Cape Health Services and Wellfleet Preservation Hall. The distinguished counselor currently sits on the Boards of the Payomet Performing Art Center and the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, so his commitment to promoting the cultural environment in our community goes above and beyond. Bruce is an attorney with offices in Hyannis, Chatham and Easton specializing in a wide range of legal services. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to benefit from his expertise and leadership. We still miss having attorney, former board member and DJ Dave Cole around, but who knows, maybe Bruce is an expert on old blues and country music too!
Another Year....

Another seasonal rite of passage around here is the annual business meeting of our corporation which takes place shortly after the beginning of our fiscal year on October 1. The meeting has traditionally taken place at Napi's Restaurant in Provincetown on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, but those details have yet to be confirmed for this year's meeting. What has been confirmed is that the nominating committee has been informed of the intent of the incumbents to run for re-election. The seats up for election this year are held by Fred Boak, Chuck Cole, Carol Courneen, Terry Ryder and Bob Weiser. All of these fine folks will be on the ballot to be voted upon by the members of the corporation at the annual meeting. Any further nominations must be received by September 15 in order to be placed on the ballots which will be mailed out by October 15.

More Things Later

We are thrilled to be a part of another party at the end of September. The Orleans Chamber of Commerce is organizing the 3rd annual ClamBQ on Sunday September 28 from 11:30-6. It's an authentic Cape Cod clam bake and BBQ with live music provided by The Catbirds and Funktapuss. If that's not funky enough, WOMR's own Matty Dread will be the emcee and DJ for the event as well. Appropriately, the whole thing takes place on the beautiful lawn of the Odd Fellows Hall on Namskaket Road in Orleans. The Odd Fellows have been gracious hosts of several WOMR events in the past in addition to the ClamBQ, so it should be another great day of fellowship and frivolity.

Jayme Stone

Fans of folks music will already be familiar with Jayme Stone's work. Coming up in the first week of November you'll be able to enjoy his latest project celebrating the work of pioneering musicologist Alan Lomax. With his father, Lomax was responsible for making thousands of field recordings of folk music from the United States and throughout Europe. His work helped to preserve a catalog that would have otherwise been lost, and fed the folk music revival of the 50s and 60s. The show will take place on Friday November 7 at the Harwich Junior Theater. Tickets will go on sale soon through the website at womr.org and by calling the office.

The Really Big Show

As part of our ongoing mission to stay involved with our community and have fun at the same time, WOMR will be participating in Women's Week in a Really Big way. Assuming we can get all our technical horses to march in step, the radio station will broadcast The Really Big Show from the UU Meeting House in Provincetown on Friday October 17 at 7pm. The show will be hosted by comedian Mimi Gonzalez and stars a cavalcade of personalities who will all be in town for the week doing their own feature performances. This event has been one of the most highly anticipated highlights of Women's Week for years, and WOMR is excited to be able to bring it direct to our listeners.
