Greetings!

Executive Director John Braden
Although the actual weather hasn't quite gotten the message yet, things are heating up on the Cape as we head into the high season. Sometimes it seems like we try to pack a whole year's worth of fun into 4 or 5 months around here, but that's life on the sandbar. On the upside, there's no shortage of opportunities for us to share the community radio spirit. Just over the next few weeks we've got movies and concerts and a triathlon. We have ongoing partnerships with a number of local organizations, including the Provincetown International Film Festival and the Payomet Performing Arts Center. We are also the beneficiary of events being produced by others who appreciate the value of community radio. We're so proud of everything we could burst. And then take a nap. On second thought, sleep can wait until after Columbus Day. We don't want to miss any of the excitement of high season in paradise.

Ready...Set...Go!

There's still time to register for the 2014 Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon, but spaces are filling up fast. the race takes place at 7am on June 21 at Long Pond in Wellfleet. Registration for any remaining spaces will start at 5:30am on race day, but it's cheaper if you register in advance. If you love community radio and want to support an athlete as they raise money for the station, you can make a pledge in the name of an athlete through our website here. If you like to swim, bike or run, but don't want to commit to doing all three, you can put together a team of racers to handle the legs separately. Part of the proceeds benefit Wellfleet Montessori School, so there are plenty of warm and fuzzies to go around.

Movie Time

If taking in a movie is more your speed that running a race, we've got you covered there, too. For many years, Brad Moore has been showing films at the Schoolhouse through the fall and winter to support WOMR and WFMR in the offseason. Now Brad takes the show on the road for a special engagement at Wellfleet Preservation Hall on Thursday June 12 at 8pm. You can enjoy the film that won the first ever Oscar for Best Actress and Best Director while being serenaded by a live band. Luckily, the film itself is silent, otherwise it would be weird to have the band there. Thanks to Dinah Mellin, Randy Patterson and Roe Osbourne for being part of the show.

Speaking of films, WOMR and WFMR are proud to be sponsors of the 16th annual Provincetown International Film Festival. As in years past, the Festival will be showing films at the Schoolhouse. This year the partnership is growing with the participation of the station in the closing ceremonies of the Festival on Sunday June 22. Matty Dread will be DJing the closing party at Saki restaurant on Commercial Street in Ptown from 8:30 to midnight, and we're working on putting the party live on the air. It's a great opportunity to share the wealth of Outermost Community Radio with the Film Festival audience and really show folks another great side of the outer Cape. Thanks to Jared Early for being the hero of this year's Film Fest.
Trouble Makers Unite!

If you don't know this band yet, you'll just have to trust us on this one. There's going to be one mighty joyous noise going on at Provincetown Town Hall on Friday July 11. Vintage Trouble got their first big breaks opening for bands such as Queen, The Who and The Rolling Stones. You've heard of them, right? Well, we weren't at those shows, but based on the available evidence, we're guessing that the opener may just have upstaged the headliner. After countless appearances on the late-night shows and placement in several national ad campaigns, Vintage Trouble are ready to take the world by storm. They bring their brand of rock and soul to our little corner of the world joined by opening act Jenny Dee and The Deelinquents and Matty Dread on the decks. We're fairly certain that the Hall will need a new roof after this one. Get your tickets here and now.
Stand Up for Community Radio

So you've gotten some exercise, taken in a few films and gotten yer ya-yas out at a rock and soul revival. What's next, you ask? How about a little comedy and memoir from two of the best? John Waters brings his inimitable style to the Provincetown Town Hall stage on Monday July 14 when he presents "This Filthy World, Volume Two." Waters' has spent time in Ptown for many years, and this time part of the proceeds of the Shawn Nightingale production will benefit our station. The evening will also feature a question and answer session and a book signing of Waters' latest book, "Carsick," which recounts his adventures hitchhiking across America. Mr. Nightingale has also graciously named WOMR and WFMR a beneficiary of the performance by David Sedaris at Provincetown Town Hall on Friday August 1. See the whole line up from Shawn Nightingale Productions here.

Comings and Goings
Board
It's a bumper year for volunteer DJs here at the station. The good news is that there's a long line of talented and enthusiastic people who are chomping at the bit to get on the air. The bad news is that we don't have enough airtime to go around for everyone. If you hear a new voice on the air, give them a listen and give them your support. A little love can go a long way for someone new to the airwaves. If you don't like something you hear, you can tell the staff about that, too. We welcome feedback of all kinds. Just be gentle.

Some of the folks who are newly established in regular time slots include Bernie Hutchens and Walt Gately, who will alternate on Sunday afternoons after Dave Cole has his last regular show on June 29. Bernie has already taken up residence in the slot until Jay Harrington returns in the fall. Justine Alten will deliver her brand of indie-pop-rock every Monday morning from 6-9am following the departure of Tom Brogan from the alternate Mondays. Richard Brezner will present his Northern Soul program once a month on Fridays at 7pm following Lady Di. Sal Siciliano will occupy one of the other Friday evenings in that time slot with his show "Black and Blue" until Diana Fabbri returns in the fall. Sal will be spinning his favorite jazz and blues records. Sandra Hemeon-McMahon will bring us the Hispanic Beat every second Sunday from 6-9pm until Sam Homstock returns with his Gulf Coast and Beyond program. Sabor!

Volunteer Spotlight
And here she is now. Meet WOMR DJ Sandra Hemeon-McMahon. Sandra has been a great sub for us for the last few years with her Hispanic Beat and Friday Night Rock shows, among others. Sandra has also been instrumental in keeping the vibe alive on the Outer Cape Teens show, as well. Sandra is the proud mom of a couple of eager DJ children. You may have heard the voices of Aodhan and Siobhan on Saturday mornings. Aodhan has moved on to college, but he still pays us a visit every once in a while when he's back on the Cape. You can catch Siobhan hosting the show this very Saturday June 14 from 10 to noon. Thanks to Sandra for getting the whole family involved. We may even get Dad here at some point. Get your Latin groove on with Sandra on the 2nd Sundays of the month from 6-9pm through October.

There's never a bad time to push the big red button.
