Greetings!

Executive Director John Braden
It's time to lace up those running shoes literally and metaphorically as we head into high gear for high season here on the Cape. We've got LOTS of things cooking to keep your social calendar filled with community radio friendly socials well into the fall. Building on the momentum of our stupendously successful spring pledge drive, we continue to get stronger and stronger every day powered by the love from all of our listeners. Of course, love doesn't pay the bills, so your contributions are much appreciated as well. Mostly, though, it's the love that keeps us going. You can also help us by attending one of our events and telling your friends and neighbors about all the things we do. As hard as it may be to believe, there are still some people who haven't heard about our little gem at the end of the sandbar. They may need you to remove the wool from over their eyes. We're pretty sure that they'll be grateful for the service.

On Your Marks.....

The fun begins with a bang on Memorial Day weekend when Lea DeLaria takes the stage at Provincetown Town Hall. Audiences with very diverse interests may be drawn to Lea's magnificent jazz singing and her bawdy comic monologues. A quick perusal of her videos on the internet reveals that Lea sings like an angel and swears like a sailor. She's finding a new audience with her success on the show Orange Is The New Black, but those in the know have been following her career for years. Don't miss this chance to see her in the right place at the right time, Saturday May 24 at Provincetown Town Hall. Get your tickets here.

If lounge singing and stand up comedy aren't your thing, perhaps you're more of an outdoorsy type. Enjoy the sand dunes and the salty air with us as we host the Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon on Saturday June 21 in the National Seashore in Wellfleet. Myya Beck does a bang-up job putting the USA Triathlon sanctioned event together for us, and we expect to have 200 athletes swimming, biking and running as individuals and teams. Make sure you register now to reserve your spot in the limited field.
Rock and Reels

In amongst the really big productions at Town Hall, there are few other things going on you should know about. First up after the Lea DeLaria show is the CD release party for The Daggers in the Davis Space at The Schoolhouse. The Daggers are a Provincetown band full of flair and flavor. Another Cape band, The Shake, will be opening the show on Saturday June 7. It look like the show will begin around 7, but stay tuned for details. You can learn (a little) more about the band in the piece that Matty Dread wrote about them here.

Another big production we've got in the works will feature bright new stars Vintage Trouble at Provincetown Town Hall on Friday July 11. Vintage Trouble embody everything their name implies. They incorporate some very traditional influences from gospel, soul and blues into some very modern rock and roll righteousness. This is going to be one high-voltage roots revival you are not going to want to miss. Our friends Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents open the show with their brand of girl-group vocal goodness. Thanks to Tony Scungilli for heading up the production on this one. Get Vintage Trouble tickets here.

If film is more your speed than rock and roll, you may want to catch Brad Moore's presentation of the movie "Seventh Heaven" at Wellfleet Preservation Hall on Thursday June 12 at 8pm. The showing of the 1927 silent film will feature the live musical accompaniment of Dinah Mellin, Randy Patterson and Roe Osbourne. Brad is the long-time host of the fall and winter film series at The Schoolhouse, and he's taking the show on the road for a very special in-season event. Snacks and drinks will be available.
Joe/Jose Gouveia

It's been a tough season for confronting mortality for us here at community radio. We lost another family member recently when we had to say goodbye to Joe Gouveia. Joe had been the host of the Poets' Corner on our airwaves, but that was just the tip of what he did in the community. Joe was the Cape Cod Poet Laureate in 1999-2000 and the Massachusetts Poet of the Year in 2001. He was the author of "Saudades," a book of his own poetry and the editor of several other anthologies. Beyond poetry, Joe was an avid motorcyclist who was very proud of his Harley and an outspoken voice for social justice. Joe left us entirely too soon after an extended struggle with cancer.

Many thanks to Neil Silberblatt for sitting in for Joe Gouveia on the Poets' Corner while Joe dealt with his illness. Given the vibrancy of the poetry community that Joe was largely responsible for cultivating, we would love for the Poets' Corner to continue. Therefore, we are accepting proposals from individuals interested in taking that chair on an ongoing basis.

There are several other openings currently looking for hosts. Proposals are welcome for one Friday night a month from 7-9pm, alternating Sundays from 1-4pm, and alternating Monday mornings from 6-9am. All proposals can be sent to production@womr.org.

We have a couple of new contributors joining our team this month. David Cox has been an active sub in his short time with the station, and he's now the proud host of the second Sunday night each month from 9-12. You can also enjoy a Radio Brunch hosted by Nicole Cormier on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Nicole is a dietician, local food enthusiast and blogger who is now producing short pieces for us on the benefits of healthy eating. You can catch her spots during our regularly scheduled programs and on the website as podcasts.

It's really not like us to kick a guy when he's on his way out the door, but maybe just this once. You may know Dave Cole from his role as host of the Old Country Blues Buffet alternating Sundays from 1-4pm. As a result of an unfortunate ordering of his priorities, Dave will be resigning from that position effective at the end of June. What you may not know is that Dave has done yeoman's work for us behind the scenes as a member of the Board of Directors and as the provider of a boatload of invaluable legal advice over the years. We wish Dave luck with his pursuits of career and family, even though they lead him away from our community radio family.

There's never a bad time to push the big red button.
