April 2014

Greetings!

Executive Director John Braden
Well, knock us over with a feather. The 2014 Spring Pledge Drive has come and gone and it didn't hurt a bit. With the help of our fantastic volunteers and our steadfast listeners, we reached the goal faster than you can say "the voice and spirit of Cape Cod." In the time remaining that we had planned for the pledge drive, we will be able to set money aside for our building maintenance. As you probably know, we occupy a 19th century schoolhouse in the East end of Provincetown. As we also probably don't have to tell you, a 175 year-old building needs some TLC from time to time. We have big plans to fix the place up, and your continued donations will help make that possible. Thank you very much for all that you do to help keep community radio strong. It's heartwarming to see what's possible when everyone works together.

Here We Go

With the Spring Pledge Drive behind us, the next mile marker on the calendar is Memorial Day Weekend. We're celebrating the traditional kick-off of the summer season with a big show at Provincetown Town Hall. Local and national favorite Lea DeLaria will bring her band and her inimitable style to our stage with her show of comedy and song. Lea is currently enjoying success as one of the stars of the Netflix program "Orange Is The New Black," but her loyal fans will know her from years of singing and slinging barbs and quips as part of her stand up and cabaret act. Get your tickets here. General admission tickets are $25 with a limited number of VIP tickets available for $50. Proceeds to benefit your community radio station. Thanks to Michelle Crone for leading the production.

A very different, but no less exciting opportunity for you to show your community radio spirit comes around in June. Registration is now open for the Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon produced by Myya Beck. The triathlon has developed into one of our most important fund raisers over the last few years, so if you've got a hankering for taking a ride, run or swim through the National Seashore in Wellfleet, please consider joining our crazy crew and breaking a sweat with us on June 21. The USAT-sponsored event features a 1/4 mile swim, a 3 mile run and an 11 mile ride. Individuals and teams can register here.
Looking Ahead

If you're anything like the rest of us, the summer calendar can fill up mighty quick. It sometimes seems like we're trying to pack a full year of activity into 5 or 6 months. With that in mind, you may just want to save July 11 on your schedule now for another very special concert at Provincetown Town Hall. WOMR and WFMR are thrilled to welcome emerging superstars VINTAGE TROUBLE to the end of the sandbar. Bring your dancin' shoes and make sure you've had your beauty rest because this show is sure to keep you on your feet the entire time. Regional favorites Jenny Dee and The Deelinquents will get the party started. Get your tickets here and see who all's gonna be there and hear more of the band here.
Joyce Johnson

WOMR and WFMR lost a legend recently. Joyce Johnson, host of the Sands of Time program of oral history, passed away at the age of 84. While we were all very proud of Joyce's work to preserve the voices and memories of folks telling stories of how our community used to be, radio host barely scratches the surfaces of Joyce's many accomplishments. She may be best known as a sculptor and founder of the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, but she was also a teacher, a writer and a broadcaster. In addition to her work at Castle Hill, Joyce taught at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and at the Cape Cod Conservatory. Joyce wrote for the Cape Codder newspaper and spent time working at radio station WBZ in Boston. She studied art in Spain and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Joyce was committed to preserving the dune shacks of Provincetown and Truro and was a founder of the Peaked Hill Trust dedicated to doing just that. She built her studio in Truro from the ground up with her own hands and built so much more through the strength of her spirit. Joyce was kind, gentle and fearless. She will be greatly missed.

With the passing of Joyce Johnson, there will be no more new episodes of the Sands of Time. We are lucky to have a large archive of interviews recorded by Joyce over the years. We will continue to feature these recordings on alternate Fridays at 9am. You can listen to Joyce talk about her life and career in an interview with Diana Fabbri recorded for International Women's Day in a special two part edition of Sands of Time on April 25 and May 9.

In other programming news, DJ David Cox will be taking up residency on the second Sunday of the month from 9pm to midnight with his Come As You Are program. David plays a mix of rock and pop with an emphasis on singers and song writers. Don't forget to check out Chattin' Up with Lady Di on the third Sundays of the month at noon when Lady Di addresses issues of concern to the LGBT community.

Volunteer Spotlight

Many people in the music and radio business will have heard of Bob Weiser. Bob is a man whose reputation precedes him from many years of working with musicians in the studio and on stage throughout the region. Bob is a Board member, host of the Old Songs' Home on Monday mornings from 9:30 to 12:30 and the long-time conscience of community radio. Thanks to Bob for exemplifying the kind of dedication to community radio that we are lucky to enjoy from so many of our supporters.
