March 2014

Greetings!

Executive Director John Braden
And away we go. It's time to stop planning and start doing. As the newsletter is going to press, the day of special programming is under way, and the party at the Elks club is set to begin. Registration is open for the Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon and tickets are about to go on sale for the Lea Delaria show at Provincetown Town Hall on Memorial Day weekend. Of course, it's never really time to stop planning, and we continue to lay the foundations for this year's edition of the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival set to take place in the middle of September. In addition to the parties and the programs, the administrative work of keeping the boat afloat continues behind the scenes. There are grants to be written and executed with their requisite t's to be crossed and i's to be dotted. The next Community Advisory Board meeting is coming up on Saturday March 22 and all members of our community are welcome to attend. Please get in touch with us in the office if you'd like to become a member of the CAB. You can play a role in telling us how we're doing and how we might might better serve the community.
Where To Begin?

If you're reading this while it's still fresh, then you have time to cruise on over to the Elks Club just off Route 6 in Eastham for our Mardi Gras birthday celebration from 5 to 8pm on Saturday March 8. Come boogie with the Rip It Ups and enjoy the vittles from Fairway Restaurant as we have a good 'ol time raising a ruckus for community radio. There will be a raffle and a cash bar as we try to raise a few friends and a few dollars to support the cause. It's all part of our effort to take the party to new and exciting places on a regular basis. Look for us to continue to make new friends and rekindle old friendships throughout 2014.

Be sure to keep your radio tuned to WOMR/WFMR o
n your way to the party so you can catch the second session of special programming to honor International Women's Day.

Your community radio station has celebrated the day in a variety of different ways over the years, and this is the second year in a row that we have marked the day with a full day of special interviews, perfor
mances and programs by, for, and about women. Still to come are shows by Denya, Deb, Pandora and Char who all bring their own signature brand of community radio goodness to the airwaves. Click on the logo to see the full schedule with details on the content.
The Party Continues

Memorial Day weekend not only marks the official kick off of the social season on the outer Cape, it is also full of events by and for women. WOMR and WFMR will help add to the energy in town that weekend by presenting a very special performance by Lea Delaria. Hotter than ever as a result of her role in Orange Is The New Black, Lea has developed a loyal following with her incredibly diverse talent. You will laugh at her insightful comedy and amaze at her stunning abilities as a singer. This show will feature a bit of both, so it's sure to please the crowd regardless of how they first came to fall in love with Lea. What can't this woman do? General admission tickets are $25 in advance with a limited number of VIP tickets available for $50. If there are any GA tickets left by the time the day of the show rolls around, they will be sold at the door for $30, but I wouldn't take any chances on that, as this show is almost certain to sell out well in advance. Get your tickets now on our website:

Poetry Is Cool

Especially when it actually pays poets real money. Congratulations to the winners of the 2nd annual Outermost Poetry Contest. Taking home first prize in the Cape Cod division was Provincetown's own Elizabeth Bradfield with her poem "A Further Explication of Irony." First prize in the open division went to Kevin O'Rourke of Minneapolis, MN for his poem, "A Poet's Harp Made of the Breastbone of His Muse, Sings the Unnamable." You can read the poems of the winners, the runners-up and those mentioned honorably at our website. Buckets of gratitude to judge Marge Piercy and Joe Gouveia for all of their efforts to make the contest a huge success. Thanks also to Neil Silberblatt for helping Joe with the contest and for stepping up to the mic in the Poets' Corner on our airwaves.

Movie Night

The Fall and Winter Film Benefit Series continues at the Schoolhouse in February hosted by Brad Moore. Come out and enjoy some popcorn and a beverage and help support community radio while watching one of Brad Moore's historic films. Over the next few weeks you can see The Goose Woman on Mar. 13, She on Mar. 20 and join us for the 5th annual Lon Chaney birthday bash with a showing of The Unholy Three on Mar. 27.

Volunteer Spotlight

Listeners know Hilary Bamford as the host of the Friday Folk program from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. If you haven't heard the show, you are missing out on the finest collection of roots, country and folk music. What our listeners may not know is that Hilary is one of our most dedicated volunteers, helping us out with recycling runs to the transfer station, picking up the mail at the post office and preserving our institutional memory in her unofficial role as office historian. All of that in addition to her service in an official role on our Program Committee. WOMR would not be the same with her.
Thanks, Hilary!
