December 2013

Greetings!

John Braden
Executive Director
John Braden
We're almost there. With the help of our many contributors, we have almost reached our goal for the fall pledge drive. That's lucky for us, because fall is almost over. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to make our pledge drive an (almost) success.  Now it's time to gather as many acorns as we can and prepare to hunker down for a long winter's nap. It's not quite nap time yet, though, as the holiday season brings plenty of opportunities for fun and camaraderie. Add our Festivus Party to your list of occasions upon which to exchange tidings of joy on Friday December 13 from 4-7pm in the Davis Space at The Schoolhouse on Commercial Street in Provincetown. It'll be a potluck type of situation, so contact us in the office if you'd like to bring something so we can coordinate all the cooks in the kitchen. We are also taking up a collection of non-perishable food items for the Provincetown Food Pantry, so please bring a can of something to donate if you can. The Food Pantry tells us that canned protein items such as meat or fish are especially valuable. Also don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you'd like to help us close the books on the fall pledge drive. Perhaps you'd like to stack up a few more tax deductions before the end of 2013 and the onset of tax season. Ask us about our line of WOMR merchandise we can send you as a thank you gift for your contribution. It might even be a good candidate for re-gifting during this Festivus season.
And You Know It

Calling all bards! You still have time to enter the 2nd annual Outermost Poetry Contest. The contest is organized by Cape poet Joe Gouveia and features guest judge Marge Piercy. The entry fee is only $15 for up to 5 pages of original poetry, and there's a $1000 top prize for the best poem. A prize of $200 will awarded to the best poem written by someone from Cape Cod. All entries must be postmarked by December 10, so you better get cracking if you don't have something ready to go. You can get all the details by enlarging the image below.

Cozy Up

Who couldn't use a good blanket right about now? We've already had our first taste of winter on the Cape with snowflakes flying, so we recommend building a nice fire, finding a loved one to snuggle with and buying a few chances in our raffle for a home made quilt. It is an absolutely stunning masterpiece crafted with love by Julie Willecke. With 3 chances to win for a mere $10, it's an opportunity to take home a potential heirloom for pennies on the dollar. Of course, the proceeds benefit your community radio station, so it's a win-win all the way around.
A Seat at the Table
Bob Seay speaks at the 2013 annual meeting.

The great democratic tradition of community media was renewed once again this year at the annual meeting of Lower Cape Communications, Inc. That's the fancy name for the non-profit corporation that owns and operates WOMR and WFMR. Former Executive Director Bob Seay delivered an informative keynote address in which he discussed the role of public media in the modern landscape from his perspective of more than 40 years in the business. Among other things, Bob made the point that radio continues to thrive through all of the incredible changes that have occurred with the development of new media choices. He also pointed out that local sources of media are more important than ever with the global flow of information. Thanks very much to Bob for providing such great leadership in his past role as Executive and in his current role as consultant and elder statesman.

Also at the meeting, reports on the activities of the station were delivered by the various committees and new members of the Board of Directors were elected. We are very lucky to welcome Susan Lindquist and Rick Sigel to the Board and to have Ed McManus, Mary Lyttle, Ira Wood and Vernon Porter serve another term. Both Susan and Rick have extensive qualifications highlighted by Susan's tenure as Executive Director of the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and Rick's success with Training Wheels, a motorcycle riding school.

The Little Station That Can

Not only can we, but we will. With the power of the people, community radio for Cape Cod continues to thrive in a challenging media environment. Folks have more choices than ever about where to get their media, but none of those choices represents our beautiful sandbar better than WOMR. From our many diverse music programs to the wide range of news, information and entertainment talk shows, we continue to be the voice and spirit of Cape Cod.

Festivus for the
Best of Us

Please join us for a little holiday cheer on Friday December 13 from 4 to 7pm here at the Schoolhouse. It's a chance to meet and mingle for volunteers and listeners alike. Bring something to share if you like. Get in touch with John in the office to help coordinate dishes if you plan to bring something.

Santa Stampede
Come on out Saturday morning December 7 to Joe's Beach Road Bar & Grille for the Santa Stampede sponsored by the Orleans Chamber of Commerce. Registration starts at 10am and the race starts at 11am. It'll be a fun event for all ages with costumes encouraged. There will be a post-race party at Joe's with entertainment provided throughout by Matty Dread of WOMR. More information available from the Orleans Chamber of Commerce.
