November 2013

Greetings!

John Braden
Executive Director
John Braden
Unbridled optimism once again runs rampant through the office as we launch into our Fall 2013 Pledge Drive. After the incredible success of the summer drive, we have every reason to believe that our legions of supporters will answer the challenge and keep the lights on for another season here at your community radio station. Community can be defined in many different ways, but it all starts with participation and taking ownership. Of course we welcome your participation in all sorts of avenues throughout the year, but pledge drives offer you an opportunity to take ownership of the operation in a very real and tangible way. You can ensure that we continue to serve you and your interests by helping to keep us financially secure. When you think about the relative costs of things, we think that community radio continues to be one of the best bargains going. For about the same amount of money as one cup of coffee per week at a take out joint, you can become a sustaining member of community radio for the year and make the world a better place.
In It to Win It

We're always looking for creative ways to help fund the operation here at community radio, and we try to come up with things that will be fun and rewarding for you at the same time. We think we've got a winning proposition in this latest promotion. Thanks to the incredible generosity and hard work of Julie Willecke, we are able to offer you a chance to win a beautiful hand-made quilt. Raffle tickets are very reasonably priced at $5 or 3 tickets for $10. At that price, we know that you'll want to get in for multiple chances to win. If the name Willecke sounds familiar, you may have heard it while listening to Wednesday afternoon jazz with Rich Willecke on the Straight No Chaser program. Rich is also a member of our Program Committee and the Chair of the Wellfleet Board of Health, although we won't hold that against him. Call the office at 508-487-2619 and talk to Chris to get your chances. The winner will be announced on December 18 at 1pm.

Parties and Prizes

What's not to love? 'Tis the season for convivial conversation amongst colleagues, and we're gonna do our part to contribute to the trend. Feel free to stop by our Schoolhouse on Friday December 13 between 4 and 7pm for a little seasonal good cheer. The event will be pot luck so bring a dish to share. We'll also be taking a collection for the Provincetown Food Pantry, so bring something to share for the folks who need it most as well. The head of the pantry tells us that they need canned protein and paper goods the most. If you've got some old cans of tuna fish or chili, or you're willing to part with a roll of paper towels, your generosity will go on your permanent record. It may not make up for everything you've done in the past, but it can't hurt.

Poetry Contest Deadline Dec. 10

If you fancy yourself a wordsmith, why not enter our 2nd Annual Outermost Poetry Contest? The entry fee is a mere $15 and entitles you to submit up to 5 pages of your best work. A panel of judges will review all submissions and the finalists will once again be judged by renowned author and poet Marge Piercy. The deadline for submissions is December 10. For more details, you can navigate to the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/OuterMostPoetryPrize. Many thanks to Joe Gouveia, host of the Poets' Corner, for putting this together for us again this year.
Takin' Care of Business
Mark Primack at Napi's
Mark Primack speaks at the 2012 annual meeting.

November means it's time for the annual meeting of Lower Cape Communications, Inc. That's the formal name of the company that runs WOMR and WFMR. The meeting will be held at Napi's Restaurant in the heart of Provincetown on Saturday November 23 at 1pm. Lunch will be served courtesy of WOMR at noon with the business meeting to follow. Packets containing information for voting members of the corporation have already been sent out. If you believe that you're entitled to vote at the meeting but you didn't receive a packet, please call the office to get things sorted out. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting whether you're a voter or not. This year's keynote address will be delivered by former Executive Director Bob Seay.

Straight to the Top

Here we go again. While it may seem like we're always doing this, we only have three pledge drives per year, and we have actually decreased the total number of days in the pledge drives. We're able to do this because you have been so diligent and dedicated in your support of community radio. The opening weekend of the fall pledge drive went amazingly well, and the sooner we get to our goal the sooner we can get back to your regularly scheduled programming. Many of our DJs have some special premiums to entice you to pledge, so keep your ears peeled to enjoy the fringe benefits of membership.

To Do List

Just as the glow from the annual meeting will be starting to wear off, you can rekindle the fire by attending the Phil Ochs Song Night at Wellfleet Preservation Hall. David Roth, Greg Greenway and Pat Wictor (of Brother Sun), Sharon Katz (of The Peace Train), and local favorite Zoe Lewis will perform Phil Ochs material as well as pieces from their own repertoires on Sunday November 24th at 7:30pm at Wellfleet Preservation Hall. We are requesting a donation of $20, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Also, don't forget that the Fall and Winter Film Series continues with films on Thursdays at 7:30 at the Schoolhouse. There will be no film on Thanksgiving.

Snap, Crackle, Pop

Thanks to a generous donation from listener Paul Berger, we're going into the pre-loved record trade. Tony and Matty are currently cataloging the vintage vinyl and cleaning it up for resale. It's a music geek's dream. If you've got a closet full of vinyl you'd like to donate to WOMR, we would love to add it to our inventory. Clean out your closet and benefit your community radio station in the process. It's a win-win! Contact Matty in the office if you'd like to arrange for a pick up of your unwanted vinyl. Check out the current list of available titles here.

Volunteer Spotlight

Every Tuesday is a Brand New Day with Kathy Tarr. Kathy plays folk music from 6 to 9am with an emphasis on singer songwriters and performers of local interest. Kathy has also served on the Program Committee long enough that she's become eligible for parole. We're pulling for you Kathy! Seriously, Kathy is one of the most positive people you could ever meet and we're extremely lucky to have her as part of our team. You might even see her tending bar at a WOMR function.
