Greetings!
 | Executive Director John Braden |
Hello again from the end of the sandbar. It's been another glorious summer here in paradise. It's a blessing to be permanently stationed in a place that so many people work so hard to spend even a little time. Although Labor Day is right around the corner (already?), we're not letting go of the high season just yet. There's still plenty of time to savor the pleasures of being stuck in traffic. But seriously, the water is plenty warm and the angled light of the end of summer brings out the best in the scenery. Even if you can't be here, you can bring back the feeling of the sand between your toes by staying in touch with community radio for Cape Cod through the magic of the internet.

Blown Away!
After our experiences of the last couple of years, those words can still bring shivers of fear to staff and listeners alike. In this case it's an entirely good feeling. We are overwhelmed with the support shown by you, the members of Outermost Community Radio. Not only did we make our fundraising goal for the summer pledge drive, we did so in record time. Because we know how much pledge drives can stress everybody out, we planned on going for 14 days instead of the 17 days that we have spent on shameless shilling in the past. We were willing to get creative in our efforts to close any deficit that remained after that in order to avoid having to extend across the extra weekend. As it turns out, you let us off the hook. We achieved our goal of $55,000 precisely at the end of the 14th day of the drive. Many of our DJs set new personal bests for money raised during their shows. The highlight of the drive came during T-Bird's Blues Ride when an anonymous donor contributed $5,000 in one lump sum. We only wish we knew who it was so we could thank them personally. Thank you to Anonymous and everyone else who made the pledge drive a smashing success.

4th Annual CranJam
We are pleased and privileged to be partnering once again with the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival committee and the Town of Harwich to present the CranJam on September 14 and 15 at Brooks Park in Harwich Center. The Festival and the CranJam continue to evolve with this year's edition of the party taking place entirely on the same level of the park. Setting up the stage in the ball field immediately adjacent to Oak Street will help increase visibility and accessibility for everyone. Saturday's lineup includes Alexander the Jester, Cape Cod African Drum and Dance, Annie and The Beekeepers, Grace Morrison & The RSO, Andrea Gillis Band, Muck and The Mires, and Cape Cod legends The Incredible Casuals. Sunday features Sensible Shoes, Adam Ezra Group and Debo Band. The talent level of all of these artists is stupendous, so please visit their pages to find out more about them and get as excited as we are to welcome them all to our party.

Nominating Committee Report

The Nominating Committee of the Board of Directors has completed their work leading up to the election at the 2013 annual meeting of Lower Cape Communications, Inc. (that's us!). Biographies of the non-incumbent candidates can be found on the website at womr.org. Here's the report of their activity:
Report from the Nominating Committee August 12, 2013
The committee met several times from late spring through July 2013. There are five members of the board whose seats are up for reelection in 2013. They include: Susan Blood Mary Lyttle Ed McManus Vernon Porter Ira Wood
Susan Blood will not be running for reelection at this time. Vanessa Dowling, another director with two years remaining on her term, needs to step down this year due to time restraints. The committee discussed several possible candidates and the talents they would be able to bring to the organization and were pleased to identify two qualified replacements for these directors.
The committee recommends the following candidates for the 2014 ballot: Susan Lindquist from Brewster, and Rick Sigel from Orleans. Anyone wishing to nominate themselves as board members should contact the executive director to express their interest and provide a statement of intent no later than September 15th.
Respectfully submitted on August 12, 2013 Mary Lyttle, Chair |
The summer pledge drive may be over, but there's never a bad time to become a member of community radio. Thank you for your support.

New Web Exclusive Content
We are very proud to be rolling out some new programs as part of our snazzy new website. Say hello to the newest members of our WOMR programmer family, Raven Byron Hyde and William Goedicke. Raven hosts SuperSnazzy, featuring interviews with comedians where they expose the dark underbelly of the business of being funny. It might even be funny. We'll leave that for you to decide. You'll also get a chance to hear Matty Dread take advantage of the opportunity to make a fool of himself for your potential entertainment. On a more useful note, Billy The Computer Guy delivers nuggets of wisdom that he's accumulated over his many years working with the technology that can frustrate so many of us. Check his podcast out for tips on how to get the most out of your machines. Coming soon you'll be able to enjoy the talents of the Cape Cod Radio Mystery Theater. Steve Oney and his talented cast have been producing amazing work for years, and we're thrilled to provide a platform for you to enjoy the fruits of their labor. There's even more stuff on the website to distract you. Jeannette de Beauvoir is our fearless leader into the world of blogging. You can see her expand on some of the events that she features on her show, Arts Week, and read about some things that don't make it into the radio show. We've got some amazingly talented writers in our family, and we hope to shanghai a few more of them into contributing written words for us in the weeks and months to come.

Step Right Up
We have had a couple of DJs step away from the mic recently. Chris Hawley retired from producing his show, WOMR Problem Solvers. Chris wore many hats for us over the years, an we offer our sincere gratitude for his contributions. Indira Ganesan, Nan Cinnater and Vanessa Downing were all called away from their shows by the demands of their jobs. All of this leaves a few openings in our broadcast schedule, so if you or someone you know would like to be a DJ, get in touch with us by any and all means. In particular, we'd really love to find someone who would like to host alternate Monday mornings from 6 to 9am.
