Greetings!
 | Executive Director John Braden |
And away we go. The days are longer, the weather is beginning to warm up, July is right around the corner and the out-of-state license plates have begun to repopulate our roads. The rhythm of the seasons has come around to the crowded time of year here on the sandbar. It's always exciting to reconnect with old friends and to strike up new relationships with our seasonal visitors. We've got some big things planned for the coming weeks and months. Stay tuned to your community radio station to find what's happening in the area, and to hear about the issues that affect us on Cape Cod. Just remember to leave a little more time than you think you need to get where you're going.

Jumpin' Jambalaya Jam
Our first big party of the year takes place this Saturday, June 15, at the Payomet Performing Arts Center in North Truro. A production of our good friends at the Payomet in a benefit for community radio, it's gonna be an all day affair with doors opening at 1:30 for an afternoon program that features performances for kids by Jeremy Lyons' Delta Silly and The Slippery Sneakers Zydeco Dance Band. There will be Cajun dance lessons and food available, too! Admission is $10 for adults or $15 for families of up to 7. The evening session begins at 6pm and features the sounds of Southern Louisiana with the Pine Leaf Boys and Brother Joscephus and the Love Revolution Orchestra. Pine Leaf Boys are a Grammy-nominated Cajun and Zydeco group that bring new life to a traditional repertoire. Brother Joscephus is on a musical mission that blends rock, soul and gospel into a message of positivity and righteousness. Long-time friend of the station Jeremy Lyons will also play a set in the evening program. The festival provides a grand opening indeed to the 15th season at the Payomet tent.

Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon
Time is running out for you to start training for the third annual Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon taking place on Saturday June 22 at Long Pond in Wellfleet. Don't worry if you're not entirely ready to compete in the Ironman, though. Our race is is only a 1/4 mile swim, 3 mile run and an 11 mile bike ride. You can even team up with some partners and split up the various legs of the race. Although we will have official timing sanctioned by USATriathlon that will allow more serious competitors to use their times to qualify for other events, the name of the game is fun and fundraising. The event is a benefit for WOMR/WFMR with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the Wellfleet Montessori school. It's become an essential part of our fundraising calendar, so bring your friends, form a team and help us raise money to support the mission of a media outlet that represents our community like none other. |
Other Bits
We're looking forward to working with our friends at Payomet again next month when we present The Duhks on July 23. If you don't know about The Duhks (and even if you do), you're in for a real treat. They use traditional instruments to create an exciting blend of zydeco, bluegrass, gospel, soul, Celtic and Latin music. You've got to hear them to fully appreciate how The Duhks take old-time forms to futuristic places. All of this from a band formed in the wilds of Winnipeg, Manitoba. One of the beautiful things about community media is meeting all of the people who make it their own. Our door is always open to welcome the many travelers who come through town. Some folks are already members of the station, others are fans of a particular show, while still others are supporters of community media more generally. We were saddened to recently learn of the passing of one of these visitors. Paul Muniz lived in California, but he traveled extensively and made contributions to community radio stations wherever he went. A group of Paul's friends and family made a memorial bike ride in his honor with proceeds going to the National Federation of Community Broadcasters and the Prometheus Radio Project. We are grateful for the inspiration that Paul was able to provide, and humbled by the generosity of he and his loved ones.

Tower Update
The short story is that the signal at 92.1FM is still not at full strength. We have had engineers and sub-contractors on site several times recently, and we are currently waiting on the delivery of one more part before we can begin to power up the transmitter. After replacing the part of the system that we thought was causing the problem, it became clear that there were still issues. We now have replaced an even bigger part of the system, and updated the technology used at the same time. We lost a few days due to weather, but it's hard to blame folks for not climbing the tower in the remnants of a tropical storm. We are all trying to keep patient while working as hard as we can to get things where they need to be. Remember that 91.3FM in Orleans continues business as usual as does the stream at womr.org.

Magnificent Magnum Moving & Storage
A great big community radio round of applause to Steve Magliano of Magnum Moving & Storage in Eastham for donating the proceeds from a "yard sale" at his business. Steve put out the familiar community radio jug and asked people to donate what they could in exchange for the merchandise. The result was a whopping good yield, showing once again how much local radio means to the good people of our community. Development Director Justine Alten is pictured here accepting the proceeds from Steve. Smiles all around. Be sure to tell Steve how cool he is for supporting WOMR when you call Magnum for you moving and storage needs.
