Greetings!

It's beginning to feel a lot like spring here on old Cape Cod. With a couple of warm sunny days recently, the crocuses and the daffodils are blooming, and the thoughts of the winter's nor'easters are receding into distant memory. High season is still a few months away, but things are definitely picking up around the office. In addition to a few upcoming events that we're excited about, the spring pledge drive is upon us. It's time for all of us to throw our collective shoulders into the real work of keeping our station on the air. Of course there are things like tending to the occasional transmitter outage and actually producing radio shows, but none of that happens unless we raise the money to make it possible.  We try to make our fundraising as fun as possible, with special guests and a variety of incentives to keep the listeners involved. Speaking of incentives, look for our direct mail appeal and return the card for your chance to win a package that includes gifts from Capt'n Elmer's, Chatham and Dennisport Natural Markets, Bubala's, Terra Luna, Chatham Squire, Hot L, W.H.A.T., Cape Air and Payomet Performing Arts Center. That's a lot of goodies all going to one lucky winner, and it could be you.

  Happy DayBday 2013 jam
A fine time was had by all on Sunday March 24 as we celebrated 31 years on the air with an open house party at the Schoolhouse. Many thanks to board member Mary Lyttle for organizing the whole shebang which featured a potluck buffet and a potluck assortment of musicians making a joyous noise. Pictured here are Jay Cournoyer, Link Montana, Randy Patterson and WOMR DJ Dinah Mellin. The group was joined for a time by Phillip Cousins on the piano, and former Station Manger John Nelson did a solo set. Link and Jay were also kind enough to do a few songs over the air for folks who weren't able to make it to the party. It was nice to have an opportunity to let our hair down and get to know some of our listeners a little better in a casual setting, not that being casual is all that rare for us here in community radio. It's always energizing to get to meet some our listeners in person instead of over the wireless.

As you might expect with the onset of spring, we have quite a few events planned for everyone in the coming weeks. The fun starts this Friday with a showing of the documentary film "For The Love of The Music: the Club 47 Folk Revival" about the influential Cambridge venue that gave a lift to the blossoming folk music scene of the '60s. Join us at 7:30 April 5 in the Schoolhouse, 494 Commercial Street in Provincetown. Tickets are $10 cheap, but you will want to get them in advance as this film had two sold out showings over the winter at Wellfleet Preservation Hall.

One of the fabulous things about community radio is our ability to partner with other local groups to promote arts and culture on Cape Cod. We are pleased to be working with the folks at Brewster Meeting House to present singer-songwriter Tracy Grammer on Saturday April 27 at 8pm at the First Parish UU on Rt. 6A in Brewster. Tickets are available through womr.org or by calling the office at 508-487-2619. We hope this to be the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration between our two groups.

We are also proud to partner with the 2nd annual Cape Cod Women's Music Festival. This year the event will be held at Provincetown Town Hall on Saturday May 11 at 7pm. The event was a tremendous success in its first year, and it promises to be even bigger and better this year. All of the proceeds go to benefit girlygirl P.A.R.T.S., an organization that helps women battling cancer. Featured artists include Nicole Nelson, Zili Misik, Jenny Dee, Rabbit Rabbit, Annie & The Beekeepers, Kami Lyle and Sarah Swain. Get more info at capecodwomensmusicfestival.com.

Don't forget to register for the 3rd annual Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon taking place June 22 at Long Pond in Wellfleet. The event has become one of the anchors of our fundraising and events calendar and now features official timing as sanctioned by USATriathlon for athletes to use as qualifying for other races. There is still room available for individuals and teams to compete.

When you've been around for as long as we have, these things are bound to happen. Nevertheless, the pain is real when we lose one of our own. We are mourning the passing of long-time DJ Joe Poire. Joe was the host of My Favorite Things, Joe's Corner and The Joe Poire Show for more than 25 years.  He was always helpful in getting new volunteers on the air including current DJs Lady Di and Rich Willecke among others. Joe had a great delivery and a generous spirit that will be greatly missed.

Great News!

Our gratitude goes out to the voters of Provincetown who approved a grant to help us preserve our historic Schoolhouse. After initial approval from the Community Preservation Committee, the decision to award WOMR/WFMR a grant from the Community Preservation Fund successfully went before Town Meeting. These funds will be used to make much needed repairs to our windows and doors as well as refinishing our bell tower. Plans are now being finalized for work that will begin soon.

Thank You!

You're Welcome

As a volunteer driven organization, we're always looking for live bodies to help us do our work. Being a DJ or giving money isn't the only way to help community radio. You can be a member of one of our advisory committees, you can help with administrative tasks around the office, or you can simply attend a meeting to give your input.
