March 2013

Greetings!

John Braden
Interim Executive Director
John Braden

As we head into March, our thoughts turn to the lengthening days, the return of the migratory wildlife (human and otherwise), and the impending onset of spring. The main transmitter for 92.1FM on Mt. Gilboa is getting in on the return to life as well. It went into hibernation for a while following a suspected lightning strike during the blizzard of February 9-10. After several trips up the hill, inspections from several experts and several phone calls to the manufacturer, we finally managed to get it back to full power. We're still waiting on the delivery of a few more parts, and we'll have to power down the transmitter while we install those parts, but things are soooooo much better than they were just a few days ago. Welcome back to our friends on the South shore and elsewhere that depend on the full power of 92.1FM to get their community radio goodness. We're sorry that you may have had to go without us for awhile. Don't forget that we're always available on the interwebs and mobile apps. Our internet stream did go down for a few hours in the storm, but it came back to life much more quickly than did the towers. Our generator allowed us to avoid some of the problems associated with the storm, but there's only so much you can do when Mother Nature gets that angry.

As you can see, we've got a pretty special day of programming lined up for you this coming Friday. WOMR has celebrated International Women's Day in the past, and this year's events promise to be the best we've ever done. The women of the committee have been working very hard to put together a stellar group of shows featuring some incredibly impressive guests. The Cape Cod Times was impressed enough to write an extensive article on the topic. Join us on March 8 for music and talk by, for and about women. It's just another example of how community radio is the voice of the people who take the initiative to make it their own.
Looking Ahead
Triathlon
Registration should be open soon for the 3rd annual Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon. The event which has become an anchor of our fund raising calendar is scheduled to take place June 22 in the National Seashore land in Wellfleet. Find more information here. Everyone is also invited to our birthday party on Sunday March 24 from 3-6pm at the Schoolhouse. It won't be the extravaganza that we had last year to celebrate our 30th, but there will be food and music and fun. Come on out and we'll have a schmooze.

In Concert

How cool is this? Long time friend of the station Dar Williams has offered to put on a concert for the benefit of Outermost Community Radio and Wellfleet Preservation Hall. For those of you who don't know, Prez Hall (as everyone calls it) is a great partner with WOMR.  They are coming up on their second anniversary of offering a great performance space and meeting hall in a converted church right in the middle of Wellfleet. The concert will take place down the street at the Wellfleet Congregational Church on Saturday March 23. Get your tickets now to see a great show and help support two great outer Cape arts organizations. Thanks to the  Sage Inn for providing rooms for the musicians. Be sure to check them out if you need a room for that weekend.

 The People

Winters are always financially challenging in this part of the world. The vast majority of our economic activity takes place in the other months of the year. That challenge grew this year as our federal funding was cut by about 20%. We were left with no choice but to go to our membership once again to ask for help. Despite the fact that 92.1FM was at low power during the pledge drive, and the fact that there was another storm that weekend that prevented some of our volunteers from getting to the station, we significantly exceeded our fund raising goal for the period. That this is possible in the off season in this economy is an incredible tribute to our community and its commitment to having our own broadcast outlet.

Thank You!
