January 2013

Greetings!

Here's hoping that this note finds you well on your way to a happy and prosperous new year.  Perhaps you've even managed to avoid breaking any resolutions you might have made yet.   Or maybe you're like us and have developed the wisdom to avoid giving yourself too many unrealistic ultimatums.  The end of 2012 was very good to us here at WOMR, where we are happy to report that we made our fundraising goal for the period.  Between the response to our direct mail, the on-air drive and a few private foundations, we will be able to keep the fires burning a little while longer.  A great big thank you to all of you who continue to help make this dream a reality.  With so many budgets stretched thin, and so many worthy causes asking for your help, it is amazingly gratifying to know that so many of you have chosen to make us the beneficiaries of your generosity.

We're Gonna Meet You Land Ho!

To no one's great surprise, things slow waaaaaay down on the outer Cape in January. Whatever energy we had on reserve to get us through the end of the year is completely spent, and even year-round residents find the time to get off-Cape for a while.  We do still have a few things going on, however, and planning for the high season of 2013 is kicking into gear.  Conversations have begun to plan for our birthday in March, the Lower Cape Sprint Triathlon in June, and even the CranJam at the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival in September.  In the near term, everyone is invited to join us for a social at the Harwichport Land Ho! on Thursday January 17 from 6 to 8pm.  The restaurant will put out some snacks for us, and we can enjoy a beverage as we get to know each other.  We are particularly pleased to mingle with folks in our (still relatively new) 91.3FM listening area.  One lucky schmoozer will walk away with a gift bag full of WOMR merchandise.  Come on out.

Art Raffle Sarah Holl

In addition to our night out at the Land Ho! Hariwchport, we are raffling off a fabulous piece of art donated to us by an anonymous supporter.  "Red Nude" by Cape Cod artist Sarah Holl is 28' x 39' is a painting and mixed media work on board that has been valued at more than $1500 by the artist. We couldn't justify simply giving it away asa membership premium, so we're selling raffle tickets for $10 per chance, 3 for $15 or 5 for $20.  Take advantage of this rare chance to take home a fine art original with a minimal investment.  It's all part of our ongoing effort to come up with new and interesting ways of raising money to support community radio on Cape Cod.

Several DJs have taken their leave from the air waves for a while.  Rich Rubino has left the "Sounds of America" on Thursdays from 5 to 8pm until April, and Indira Ganesan will be away from her "Namaste" program on Monday mornings from 6 to 9am until April as well.  April will also mark the return of Yankee Dave to his show, "Miles To Go" on Wednesday nights from 9 to midnight.  Tony the Squid Jigger is not away for quite as long.  He will return to "The Squid Jigger's Blend" on Wednesday mornings from 6 to 9am in the middle of February.  Carol Courneen is leaving "Roots and Offshoots" on Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 12:30 for a while too, but she has some very exciting guest hosts lined up, so stay tuned.

While some DJs are away for a while, others are just joining our team.  Mardi Steinau is now presenting "Women's Voices" every Tuesday night at midnight into Wednesday morning at 3am.  Karen Stein has become a part of the Sunday world music rotation on the third Sunday evenings of the month from 6 to 9pm with her program "Imagine".  Kerry Lardner has also been cleared to launch her program for kids and parents on the 4th Sundays of the month from noon to 1pm.  More DJs are always welcome - email matty@womr.org or call the office at 508-487-2619 to start your training.

New Website
Under Construction

Just so you're not completely shocked and horrified when it actually happens, we thought we'd let you know that we're in the process of building an entirely new web presence for the station.  With the help of web designer Josiah Cole, we will be getting a new home page, a new playlist service, a new steaming arrangement and more.  We have already migrated our email away from the old service to the new one, although nothing should be noticeable from the outside.  All of the email addresses that worked before are still active in the new system. Get ready for a sleek and modern look that should be rolling out in the near future.
