The BIG News
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio |
|
|
| |
What if every child in central Ohio fulfilled his or her potential? Think how amazing that would be! But right here in central Ohio, there are far too many kids who face difficult challenges in their lives. Here's a sobering statistic: more than 26% of the children in Franklin County are living in poverty. These kids -- and those who face other challenges such as having an incarcerated parent -- are some of the most vulnerable in our society.
Many of these kids are on our waiting list right now, just hoping for a Big Brother or Big Sister. Please consider volunteering to mentor a child! Or if you are already matched with a child, please pass our plea on to your friends, family and co-workers. And don't forget that we have volunteer opportunities to fit every lifestyle!

2012 Annual Meeting = Inspiration!
Inspiration was center stage at the Agency's 2012 Annual Meeting, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house after our three Matches of the Year and Alumni Littles shared their stories! Congratulations to Big Brother John Hawley and Little Brother Jeremey (Community-based Match of the Year), Mentor Sharyn Rigsbee and Mentee Brandy (Dual Match of the Year), and Big Sister Christie Thompson and Little Sister Polly (School-based Match of the Year). A special thank you to Alumni Little Sister Mayra Flores and her former Big Sister Mira Wright plus Alumni Little Brothers David and Robert Sturgill and their former Big Brother John Hawley. Once a Big, always a Big really fits John Hawley, who is currently mentoring Jeremey and was matched with David and Robert in the 1970s! In a very special moment at the meeting, the coveted 2012 Milton Lewin Legacy Award was presented to our friends at Schoedinger Funeral & Cremation Service. |

Something For Everyone
Over the past several months, there have been a lot of great ways to support the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters in the community! Check out just a few:
Over the Edge for Kids' Sake Everyone who participated in our first Over the Edge for Kids' Sake event had a great time -- facing their fears and dropping down 20 stories to the pavement below. We're putting together plans to do it again in 2013. If you are interested, please send an email to Lori Brown and she will keep you updated as plans come together!
The Mentoring Celebration
Partners and friends of our Mentoring Center of Central Ohio celebrated National Mentoring Month at the annual Mentoring Celebration at the Ohio Statehouse on January 15. The inspiring event celebrated successful mentoring matches. Speakers included Cabot Rea of NBC4i, Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston of The Ohio State University and Francis Curtis Frazier of Rise Sister Rise. For more information about the work of the Mentoring Center, please visit the Mentoring Center's website and Facebook page.
Holidays in the Cou ntry
An old-fashioned holiday celebration with friends surrounded by the beauty of Camp Oty'Okwa in the Hocking Hills. That's what Holidays in the Country was all about. A delicious gourmet holiday banquet, live entertainment, a festive wagon ride and a Silent Auction were enjoyed by all. It was a great way to celebrate the holidays and help kids!
Clark Kellogg Tip-Off Classic
About 2,500 people attended the inaugural Clark Kellogg Tip-Off Classic in Pickerington. The daylong basketball tournament on December 1st featured 12 teams and benefitted Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio and the Central Ohio Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The awesome Quarter Sponsors were Nationwide Insurance and 97.1 The Fan, and the Slam Dunk Sponsors included Meijer, Toyota Direct, Ernst & Young and Wings To Go. |

SPECIAL THANKS
Did you know that AmeriCorps Service Members are making a big difference for the kids we serve? Our special thanks goes to ServeOhio, Ohio's commission on service and volunteerism, which administers the grant that has made this possible. Our talented and dedicated AmeriCorps Service Members are supporting and sustaining mentoring matches and recruiting more volunteers for our programs!
A BIG CHECK!
Thanks to our friends at Safelite for the BIG check that will help provide a vehicle to transport Camp Oty'Okwa campers!
