Diocesan House Construction Update

PARRISH - Site work for our new Diocesan House continues at DaySpring. The land has been graded and trees have been cleared in preparation for the laying of the foundation. The chipped trees from the site will become mulch for DaySpring.

Contractors hope to begin work on the foundation before Christmas. Follow the work online at

New Beginnings Registration Under Way

PARRISH - New Beginnings, a ministry that shares the love of Christ with youth in grades 6-8, is now holding registration for their February session.

In the New Beginnings program, adults from local parishes team with high school youths to minister to attendees, supporting them in their faith and encouraging them to be positive about their family and community.

The New Beginnings program begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 and continues until Sunday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. Activities include a series of songs, skits, films, tapes, and small group discussions. Topics such as God's love, prayer, self, friends, parents, siblings and school are explored with talks introduced by the high school youth and adult members of the team. This is the 51st New Beginnings event. The cost is $100; the registration deadline is Feb. 15. Attendees can register and pay online at www.episcopalswfl.org.

In the News: Edison at St. Luke's, Fort Myers

Miscellaneous news clippings from around the Diocese:
  • Feature News: In 1929, Thomas Edison was expected to take time away from his "rubber experiments" to attend St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Fort Myers. According to a recent feature in the Fort Myers News-Press, the inventor of the light bulb only once spent a Christmas at his southern compound. While the rest of Fort Myers was enjoying General Electric's novelty Christmas lights, the inventor of the light bulb was apparently content with "just an old-fashioned Christmas." See the story at www.news-press.com.
  • Diocese Publications: In their newsletter The Sandpiper, All Angels by the Sea on Longboat Key reported that they are assisting St. George's, Bradenton in an effort to support the St. George Food Pantry. With the economic downturn, the food pantry is now assisting over 150 families.
  • National Anglican Journal: The winter edition of The Anglican Digest published a poem by Sandy Davis of Church of the Good Shepherd, Venice. The Digest is published four times per year by SPEAK, the Society for Promoting and Encouraging Arts and Knowledge of the Church. See the edition here.

Looking Back: 40 Years Ago

Diocese News from
the December 1971 edition of
The Southern Cross

Just for fun, items from the November/December 1971 issue:
  • The Diocesan Altar Guild held a meeting at St. Wilfred's. The Rev Edward C. Chalfant, Vicar of St. John's, Clearwater, spoke on his own experience at a mission church, where linens and vessels were placed with the congregation for safe-keeping and cleaning between services. Often a Styrofoam "tabernacle" picnic chest conveyed the items between home and worship.
  • The Diocese thanked the "charming young pages excused from school to run for coffee and ballots" at the 1971 Convention and remarked on the "new beards" on clergy.
  • St. John's, Naples formally opened on November 21, 1971, with the Rev. Tom Moss as vicar.
  • The Rev. Joseph Weaver and his wife Shirley have joined Church of the Good Shepherd, Dunedin.
  • A loan to the Bishop William Crane Gray Inn was reduced to $61,000.
