MLR Monthly News & Updates - April 2016
Hi All,

Looks like Spring has finally arrived here. It's not like we have the worst weather in the world but living by the ocean in SoCal is much cooler than living even a few miles inland. On some summer days we can be as much as 30 degrees cooler! Being from New England I much prefer this weather.

A couple of weeks ago the BMI quarterly payment came in. Here's hoping yours was satisfying and growing
!

MLR continues to attract more and more composers from around the world and it's a thrill to see it grow. I learn as much as anyone from the collective wisdom of all of our members and visitors!

Why Are Music Libraries Exclusive?

Composer Of Notes asked: "I just finished some tracks for an "exclusive" library. They notified me that the "CD" is out and I went to their website and there it is for all to buy and license. So how is this exclusive?"
Other DAW choices besides Pro Tools?

ChuckMott wondered: "It's time for another Pro Tools upgrade, but now AVID have something akin to a subscription plan where if you pay $200 annually you get all the most recent current uploads. Or have to buy the software all over again. I love pro tools but the constant upgrade path is, for me, getting expensive and somewhat annoying.....Thoughts?". Read on...

And yes, more of this nonsense. This has to be heard to be believed! It's so bad that one could almost feel sorry for this person except that he has a number of CDs spread across Cd Baby, iTunes, Spotify, etc. More here...

Yoga for Tired Hands

If you play keyboards or guitar or spend lots of time typing emails, you might suffer from fatigue or stiffness in your fingers, hands and wrists sometimes. Our hands do so much for us that it's easy to take them for granted. Here are a couple of moves that might help alleviate stiffness and fatigue. (Note: I'm not talking about a more serious condition such as carpal tunnel syndrome.  This is for mild discomfort.)

To begin with, extend your right arm and bend the elbow at a right angle so that the fingertips are pointed towards the ceiling.  Now with the left hand gently press the right fingertips back just until you feel a stretch on the inside of the right wrist.  Don't overdo! Hold for a breath or two. Now extend the right arm and using your left hand, press the back of the right hand back downward until you feel a stretch on the top side of the right wrist.  Hold for a breath or two.  Now reverse sides. This should feel really good, but remember to take it easy. We're just looking for a gentle stretch.

You can make wrist circles too. Simply extend your arms straight out in front of you and make a soft fist, as if holding on to the hot and cold water handles in the shower. Use the same circular motion you would for turning the water on and off.  Slowly inhale, twist outward, slowly exhale twist inward. Repeat two or three times.  Relax the fingers and the wrist and shake out the hands.

For stiff or tired fingers, hold both hands out in front of you, elbows bent at right angles, fingers extended upward. Now make a circle of the thumbs and forefingers and flick the forefinger as if you were trying to shake some water off of your fingers.  Repeat this motion with the third, fourth and fifth fingers touching the thumb and then "flicking the water off". Now repeat starting with the pinky and working your way back to the forefinger. Wiggle your fingers out.

After a nice back stretch and maybe some shoulder rolls, go back to creating beautiful music feeling refreshed and revitalized. Namaste!

Robin's Good Eatin'

Very Simple Blueberry Muffins

By vigilant20 - Courtesy of www.Food.com

I ran across this recipe on Food.com when I was getting ready for company and had nothing to serve with our tea.  It had to be quick and it had to be good.  Check and Check! They're not overly sweet, which to me is a good thing.  Feel free to experiment, of course.  Maybe add some vanilla or cinnamon or some sliced almonds?  Or?  Enjoy!

Ingredients

    1 1/2 cups flour
    1/2 cup sugar
    1 teaspoon salt
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    3/4 cup soy milk
    1/4 cup oil
    1 cup frozen blueberries

Directions
  1. Combine flour, sugar, salt and baking powder in a mixing bowl. Mix in soy milk and oil.
  2. Gently fold in blueberries.
  3. Pour into paper cups in a muffin pan and bake at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes.
