Hey All,

Somehow August slipped on by and I realized I had missed sending the newsletter and was about to miss September's! Robin and I both have birthdays and our anniversary in August. So, along with all of the other balls that need to be kept in the air, sometimes there is just too much going on!

Lots going on with MLR also. The biggest news is finally moving the site to a much faster and a more reliable web host. You can read all about it here.

Favorite Plugins (free or cheap)?
GM made a recent comment about his favorite plugins and I thought it would make a great topic. So, what are your favorite free or inexpensive plugins? I like some of the Voxengo stuff but definitely going to try out some of GM's. Read more...
"maxpower" wanted to know:

"I was recently contacted through Pond5 by a small production company who requested a 90 second version of one of my tracks for a web video. I happily obliged and charged them forty dollars (it took me twenty minutes to run off the edit so figured that was a decent hourly rate)." Read more...

Not Sure What To Do
"Peter" asked and got a lot of great responses:

"I'm a bit confused in what I am doing with the music library scene. I'm not sure my music is good enough or even suitable. I know my mastering can be a lot better and I am working on it but I'm just not sure on what to write and whether it's good enough in the end anyway." Read more...

Joke Corner
A jazz musician dies and goes to heaven. JokeA mind reader is at a nightclub one night and decides to give a small demonstration of her abilities.

First, she reads the mind of the lead guitarist: "Wow, look at all the cute chicks who showed up tonight! Good crowd!"

Then the drummer: "Lots of people showed up tonight...Great! we're going to make good money tonight"

Then the Keyboard player: "All three of these guys have no appreciation of my talent...What a bunch of losers"

Finally, the Bass player: "C...G...C...G..."
Robin's Good Eatin'
Grain-Free Raw Brownie Bites

When I was planning a dinner party for my family (my two sisters, their husbands, and Art and me) I was faced with an interesting challenge: How do you come up with a menu everyone can enjoy when we have one "paleo diet" follower, a vegetarian, a vegan, a couple of wheat-sensitive people, someone allergic to baker's yeast, as well as a couple of omnivores - all at the same table?!  I decided to go for the obvious - a vegetable/tofu stir-fry, rice (for those who can eat it), and salad.  But what about dessert?  I found the following recipe on-line, and to be safe, I made it a day in advance so I could taste it. Guess what?  Delicious! Very rich, so a little goes a long way.  It does involve nuts, so if you have someone who is allergic to nuts -- well -- you're on your own!

  1. 1 1/2 cups walnuts
  2. Pinch of salt
  3. 1 cup pitted dates
  4. 1 tsp vanilla
  5. 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  6. * (My own addition) shredded unsweetened coconut (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add walnuts and salt to a blender or food processor. Mix until the walnuts are finely ground.
  2. Add the dates, vanilla, and cocoa powder to the blender. Mix well until everything is combined. With the blender still running, add a couple drops of water at a time to make the mixture stick together.
  3. Using a spatula, transfer the mixture into a bowl. Using your hands, form small round balls, rolling in your palm. (Optional - my own addition) Roll each ball in coconut.
  4. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Robin's Yoga For The Stressed-Out Composer
If you're anything like me, you probably slump a little (or a lot) while engrossed at your work station.  And when I slump there is a tendency for my chin to jut forward, creating an exaggerated curve in the back of my neck (along with all the rest of the misalignments that my body exhibits when I am not paying attention to my posture.)  Sometimes this exaggerated curve can cause compression in the back of the neck, making for tension or discomfort.  Here is a little yoga move - modified "rabbit pose" that can help.  (NOTE:  Please do not try this if you have had neck surgery of any kind, glaucoma, high blood pressure, or anything more than mild discomfort or tension in the back of your neck.)

Get down on all fours with your knees under your hips, wrists under the shoulders. Now bending your elbows, lower your head gently on the floor between your hands.  Inhale, and when you exhale, roll the head forward so that the crown of the head (about where a baby has their soft spot) is on the floor. Only move as far forward as you need to to feel a gentle, pleasant stretch on the back of the neck.  Inhale and back up to the original position.  Rock back and forth gently  a few  times.  If it feels good you may wish to hold the stretch for 3-4 easy breaths.  Come back to all fours. Come to your side, draw the knees in front of you and come to seated. Take your time and sit for a few breaths before standing up slowly.
