Hi All,

Well here we are into 2015. Robin and I hope you all had a gr
eat holiday season and wishing you a fruitful 2015!

Seems like each day brings a new challenge to production music making. Witness the recent changes to BMI payouts (see below). Like the Blue Heron, I'm always looking for opportunities so
I'm a guy whose glass is always "half full". I do remain optimistic that we can all rise above the challenges of making money with our music!
BMI Change in Royalty Calculation Methods

This was recently posted by MichaelL on MLR and generated a lot of comments

"As if this business isn't challenging enough, BMI has changed the way it goes about calculating our royalties.moneybag_graphic.jpg

Did anyone other than me see a drop in BMI royalties this quarter? Did you blame it on missing cue sheets?

Well, here's a bit of bad news. I contacted BMI's director of distribution in Nashville. They now include Neilson ratings for local programing when calculating our royalty payments. (A lot of syndicated shows are considered local programing).

So, depending upon how many people are actually watching the shows containing your music, your royalties will either go up or down. As shows fade so will your royalties."

CryptoWall - CryptoLock - Ransom-Ware
I had been vaguely aware of ransom-ware over the years but the the latest incarnations are particularly nasty. One of the newest is Cryptowall. You can get it from links, attachments, clicking on ads, even a trusted web site can be infected (via drive-by downloads). Cryptowall will make copies of all of your files, encrypt them and then delete the originals. Read more...

Robin's Good Eatin'

Robin's Quick & Dirty Slop Soup

When I was a little girl my gramma used to

make wonderful tomato-based vegetable soups.  She made them so often that every time we walked into her house we were greeted by that same warm, delicious aroma.  Gramma was from the "old country".  When I asked her how to make her soup she would say, "Oh, a 'schissel' of this, a 'schissel' of that. I just use whatever I have. . ."  So I made it my business to figure out how to do that.  Gramma gave me permission to make it up as I go along, and I do.  But here's my basic formula for a delicious, warming veggie soup for a cold, gloomy day:

Take out your big pot.  Maybe saute some onions, if you have them on hand, with a little bit of olive oil.  Now add a whole jar of your favorite marinara sauce.  (I like Trader Joe's "No Salt Added" since we're being careful of sodium.)  Now fill the marinara jar with water and add that. Now add your veggies.  I like to put in a whole bag of mixed peas, corn, carrots and green beans.  What else do you have on hand?  Some chopped broccoli?  Some left-over black beans? Cauliflower?  Chopped Spinach?  Let the pot come almost to a boil and turn down the heat to simmer for at least 20-30 minutes.  Taste.  Season at will.  Serve with warm bread and butter. Feast for days!

Robin's Yoga For The Stressed-Out Composer

Que Sera Om Shanti
by Robin Munson

Like Doris Day so famously once said, "Que sera sera." (Well, Doris sang the lyrics. But Ray Evans wrote them
. It's like thinking that Barry Manilow wrote "I Write The Songs". He didn't. Bruce Johnston did. I'm a lyricist so . . . but I digress!) A few days ago Art and I got our most recent BMI statement. Although it was (by our standards, anyway) a huge stack of pages, the amount paid to us had gone down by a goodly percentage from the previous quarter. It was puzzling -- until we learned that the rules have changed yet again. And of course, not to our advantage. (sigh) Read more...
