Quarterly e-Newsletter from the Shane Victorino Foundation                            SPRING 2013

Message from Shane and Melissa

shane and melissaEarlier this year, we marked the three-year anniversary of the Shane Victorino Foundation!!! This organization has grown tremendously, due to the amazing support we have received in Philadelphia, Hawaii, Las Vegas and other areas across the country. We cannot thank you enough for helping to further our mission of providing opportunities to underserved youth! We look forward to continuing this journey with each and every one of you.

With the baseball season in full swing, we are thrilled to welcome Red Sox nation to Team Mana! Our Flyin' Hawaiian All-Stars program will host its first group this June and we are excited to make a difference in the lives of even more children in need.

For our friends in Las Vegas, we hope you will join our Foundation for two upcoming events - the Ohana Festival on May 18 and Biddin' for Bottles on June 29 (details are below).

Sending our best wishes and thanks for being a part of our efforts!

Aloha,

Melissa and Shane Victorino

OUR WORK

2012 - 2013 Hawaii Grant Recipients
We are proud to support the following organizations, each of whom received a $10,000 grant from the Shane Victorino Foundation.

A Keiki's Dream
Kaniela is a 13 year old whose dream is to be a firefighter. A AKD Keiki's Dream worked with the Maui Fire Department, County Lifeguards and Windward Aviation to create an up-close view of an ocean rescue training scenario. Jet skis and crew members were dropped into the ocean by the helicopters, as a County Lifeguard arrived on the scene. The stage was set for an exciting rescue with Kaniela as a front row observer. At the end of the day, Kaniela's response was "I can't stop smiling" - it was a perfect Dream Day for him.

Adult Friends for Youth (AFY)
AFY recently graduated 20 students from their C-Base program, which gives those who have dropped out of high school a second chance to earn a diploma. Here is one graduate's success story:

Prior to joining AFY, one student was arrested for violence and gang-related issues on a regular basis. She felt her life was too big of a mess to be fixed and failure was her only option. After participating in AFY's group sessions and individual counseling, she turned her attitude and life around. However, due to her prior weak academic performance, she did not have sufficient credits to graduate. She enrolled in the C-Base program, graduated, and hopes to join the Navy. AFY gave her the confidence and resources to persevere and overcome obstacles.
After-School All-Stars Hawaii
This school year, After-School All-Stars Hawaii launched programs on the Big Island (joining their programs on Oahu). Kea'au Middle, Pahoa Intermediate and Ka'u High & Pahala Elementary students now spend their afternoons doing homework, getting tutorial help, engaging in arts, music, dance and competing in a variety of sports activities, Monday through Friday after school.  As Kauanoe of Kea'au Middle remarked, "If I didn't go to the All-Stars, I'd be bored, unhealthy and stuck at home. I'm proud to be an All-Star because the program keeps me healthy and active. I love sports, and I am able to make friends and feel special when I come to the All-Stars!"

Donor Spotlight -OfficeMax OfficeMax

OfficeMax has been a continued supporter of our efforts across the country, including Hawaii, Philadelphia, and Las Vegas. Their generosity has helped us to grow our organization and affect the lives of countless children in need. We are grateful for their incredible partnership!

2013 #StolenBaseChallenge

The Stolen Base Challenge was created last year by friends of SVF, as a unique way to tie in Shane's on-the-field success with our fundraising. Through the campaign, participants donate a set amount for each base stolen by Shane throughout the MLB season.

Last year's Challenge raised $16,500 (with Shane's career high of 39 steals) and we're hoping to exceed that this year! To join the 2013 Stolen Base Challenge, just complete and return this form. Updates will be provided throughout the season through our Facebook, Twitter and website.
