February's Heart Paperweight Workshop
by Susan Hirsch

Kathleen Mitchell opened up her studio just before Valentines day so we could make our own paperweights with her instruction. Kathleen has taught glass for a number of years at UCSD so her direction was excellent. Many of us (myself for sure) were newbies to hot glass so this was a great chance to try a new technique in glass! Having great workshops like this one allow us to understand glass in a whole new way and appreciate the skill required.
Thank you!

"ALLURE"

The Art Glass Association of Southern California is issuing a Call to Artists for a juried show in the MAINSPACE Gallery at The Glashaus.

You must be a current member of the AGASC to enter.

All forms of glass making techniques are encouraged. Pieces will be juried into the exhibition based upon their aesthetic appeal.

Our Juror:  Tom Noel

Tom Noel began his career as an art dealer in New Orleans in the early 1980's. One of his first memorable sales was a complex hand-blown and engraved glass vessel made by Steve Tobin and sold to the New Orleans Museum of Art

In 2007, after 20 years spent operating highly successful galleries in La Jolla, Tom and his partner Larry Baza opened Noel-Baza Fine Art in Little Italy. The gallery has most often focused on narrative, representational work by significant local and regional artists. That gallery space closed in 2014 and the two art dealers are currently offering occasional curated Pop Up exhibitions. The exhibition "Under The Same Sky" is their latest, presenting well-respected San Diego artists views of the landscape in celebration of the Balboa Park Centennial, and within the San Diego History Center in

Balboa Park

Applications and entry fees must be received by midnight Monday May 11

First entry" $35.00  Each additional entry $10.00

Pieces must be delivered on Wed May 13th between 9:00am and 7:00pm

to The Glashaus 1815-B Main Street, San Diego, CA 92113.

If you are unable to deliver your work on the 13th you MUST make arrangements to deliver it BEFORE the 13th. Please contact Kathleen Mitchell [email protected] to schedule this.

Work will be juried and you will receive notification by the end of the day 5/15/15.

All work not accepted into the exhibition MUST be picked up by 5:00pm on Sunday May 17th.

Reception for "ALLURE" Saturday May 23,  6pm to 9:00pm

MAINSPACE- Gallery The Glashaus

1815-B Main Street San Diego, CA 92113

All work must be picked up on Sunday May 31st , 9:00am and 3:00pm.

No exceptions.

"STRUCTURES" BY Jack Wade
Sculpture in Glass

Jack will be have his 2nd featured artist show at San Diego Art Institute "STRUCTURES"- Sculpture in Glass

June 19th through July 19
SDAI Balboa Park
1439 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101

An artist reception will be held at SDAI on Friday, June 26 from 6pm to 8pm.

Artist Statement

The effects of light and color come together in structures of solid glass. They stand as works of strength and solidarity. The glass reflects, distorts, absorbs, and refracts light depending on the color, texture, opacity and shape it takes. The goal is to show grace and beauty through heavy solid masculine pieces.

Besides being a glass sculptor, I am a graphic designer. I try to create bold graphic designs using my computer to develop patterns to build in glass. Then I work with my hands along with power tools and heat. I cut, then fuse, then cut again and then fuse again, layer upon layer of glass, building structures that stand tall and proud.
