Letter from the President

The education committee has been working away to get some great events put together for this year!
July has two events: A group trip to the De La Torre brothers show and talk and a Daylight Photography Workshop at my studio in San Marcos. Details for both events are listed below.

We have 130 members this year and several new sponsors! There are a few people who have not renewed from last year so be sure and get updated if you plan on entering our Annual show. One of the benefits of membership is the opportunity to list your website and list classes. you can update easily at this link. AGASC membership payment page

The show committee still needs volunteers for jobs before and during the show. It takes just a little help from everyone to make this event a success. This year if you plan on entering you are required to sign up for one job as well as sitting the show one day so please see the list of jobs in the annual show article below and contact our show chairman, Gayle to help her fill in the missing jobs

Cheers, my friends!!!

Sign up for this workshop

This one day workshop will teach you how to use natural sunlight to photograph your glass with minimal equipment to get great results! Learn the difference of using reflected sunlight and filtered sunlight, and how to create professional backdrops.

In the morning we will shoot one item for each of you and in the afternoon I will give a lecture on photo-shop basics. This class fee includes post production editing on your picture and creating a hi-res and low-res file to you to use for your website or submission to a show.

For more than twenty years I was a Creative Director/Art Director and worked with many professional photographers shooting product and fashion for the direct mail industry. Many tricks I learned in the industry will help you get better results.

Using that experience and "improvising" with some "homemade" equipment you will learn some great professional tricks. The goal is to expose you to methods that cost very little and will assist you in getting results and a level of photographs of your work that you will be proud of for submitting to shows, using on your website or just for personal record. I will provide a list of the minimal items that you must have, then add a list of additional items that would be a plus. That way you can choose how much you want to spend to get these results at home.

Bring one piece of work to photograph at this workshop. (Please limit size to 36") Limit 15 people. I will have a digital camera and tripod so you do not need to bring a camera.

Point Loma Library Invitational Show

The James Edgar & Jean Jessop Hervey Pt Loma Library located at 3701 Voltaire St., San Diego, CA 92107, has invited us to exhibit August 4 - October 4th, 2014. The library is planning to coordinate an AGASC show with a floral exhibit by The Pt. Loma Garden Club, designed to compliment the art, similar to "Art Alive" at SDMA. In addition, The Friends of the Library are celebrating the 11th Anniversary of the new library building. It is a beautiful library and an exciting opportunity to expand our exposure in the community.

The Glass Show will focus on Educating the Public about the quality and variety of Art Glass Technique.  The founders circle has sent out invitations to a few of our members based on an the techniques they employ in their work. Each artist will be asked to write a short explanation of their particular technique to accompany their display.

Dates:

Exhibit - August 4th - October 4th
Hanging - August 4th, 11:30 am. (You will set up your own display).
Reception - Date TBA (In coordination with the Pt. Loma Garden Club & The
Friends of the Library).
Take Down - Saturday, October 4, 11:30 - 1 pm.

AGASC swapmeet at Lake Miramar

It was a beautiful day and a great location for a get together! We moved a few picnic tables to make our space and had chips, soda and cupcakes to eat. Everyone just set up their stuff and started shopping. There was lots of glass and studio items to choose in the form of bartering, sales and trades. If you missed it this time we will have another in the fall. I got several new molds and sold quite a bit of dichroic scrap in little jars. This was a great way to get rid of things that had been sitting around the studio for way too long, besides it was fun just seeing everyone!

Great Demonstration!

The de la Torre brothers create "La Princessa"

at Art-Hell  Studio in Barrio Logan

What a nice turnout for this educational event
on Friday May 30th.
Kathleen introduced Einar and Jamex de la Torre to the group and then got the team into action. It took almost 3 hours of intense teamwork to create the huge female dog with a wrestling mask and tiara! The brothers took turns at the bench and discussed the details as it took form. They started with a rough sketch but added elements as it progressed. Their unique collaboration is fun to watch. At the end they generously held a question and answer session with the group.
Much thanks to Kathleen for hosting this educational event!
