Greetings!
Hello to all CFPA Members!
We have had a wonderful and exciting year thus far! Instead of waiting until the end of the year and writing such a long article on the whole year, I thought it might be great to bring you all up to speed and to thank several people who have made the first half of the year such a great success. CFPA loves its Patron Sponsors. We could not accomplish even half of what we do without Patron support! Thank you for answering our "All Call" for assistance and sponsorship at the beginning of the year. Not to take away from all you do Patrons, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge CFPA's volunteers and committee members! Whether you attend every event and are in the "thick of things", or help us behind the scenes with all it takes to keep our association, Facebook or website up and running, we appreciate you more than you can ever know. We are a non-profit organization working hard to keep our members up to date on education, job placement and community involvement. It takes a Village to keep this group going strong, and we have been doing just that...GOING STRONG. Thanks to all of you!
CFPA's First Quarter CLE provided our annual "Free in February Interview Skills Seminar." We offer this seminar free to our members and students each year to assist those who are new to the job market and/or looking to move on. Our speakers, Pat McLeod of McDonald, Toole, Wiggins, P.A., Kathy Cook, Legal Studies Instructor at UCF and Michael Christian, C.P.A. put on a wonderful presentation ranging from updating your resume, interview skills and proper dress, to following up after that interview. We appreciate that they volunteer their time to present to our membership. A special thank you to our Patron Sponsor, Orange Legal, for keeping our members fed and hydrated for that 3 hour Saturday presentation. Job hunting is hard work! Stay tuned for more in February 2014!
Our First Quarter Charity event for R.A.I.N (Rescuing Animals in Need) was a success thanks to some very necessary and much appreciated volunteers! We may not have raised a ton of money, but we gave the animals exactly what they needed: food and supplies! In-kind donations are just as valuable as cash. The donation of TIME is one of the best of all. Special thanks to ALL who attended, contributed or just spread the word for R.A.I.N. PUPPY POWER!
March brought our First Quarter Membership Meeting and Social at Colonial Lanes Bowling Alley on Primrose Road in Orlando. We had quite a large turn out and fun was had by all, well almost all. I won't name any names, but it was a "Man, you had to be there kinda night!" Final highest score is still being debated. Our Patron Sponsor, US Legal, provided us bowling, shoes, pizza and soda for the evening, and that Gift Basket was awesome! Just ask Theresa Thomas.
April brought us into our Second Quarter Charity, Lungs for Brent. Brent Snyder needs no introduction to our CFPA members. At the time of this writing Brent is celebrating 7 months of "new lungs" with no signs of rejection! Because of our membership as a whole, and the generous Patron Support of US Legal at our BINGO for Brent event, and the May CLE Seminar and Silent Auction, we were able to raise well over $2,000 to assist with Brent's post-operative care. Breathe for Brent Bootcamp at Orlando Fit Body Bootcamp was...breathtaking, literally. Now THAT is team work. GO TEAM CFPA!
Speaking of our May CLE Seminar, (at Cocoa Beach), it was a HUGE success. Plans are in the works for a similar event next year. If you have speaker references or ideas, please email our CLE chairperson at clechair@cfpainc.org.
We could not have put on such a great spring seminar without CFPA's volunteers and speakers! Nancy Jordhal, Anne Hughes, Mike Logue, Joy Ewertz, Esq. and Susan Stacey, Esq are to be commended for taking the VOLUNTEER time, not only to speak at our event, but the time it takes to actually put together a presentation in the first place. Quality speakers are hard to come by, but CFPA is very lucky to have you all in our corner, helping us help our members get those much needed CLE credits! And let's not forget...THE BEACH. Great times and looking forward to more in 2014!
You would think that June would have been a little on the quiet side with so much that has gone on thus far. But Time, Tide and Trolley wait for no man. June opened up the word about CFPA's Scholarship Fundraiser and opportunities. We celebrated the opening of our scholarship with a fundraiser at Maxine's on Shine! MJC Reporting and Video Verification provided us with food and libations! The Orlando Philharmonic Musicians kept the evening flowing with smooth sounds. THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH!
That's right, for those of you who do not get all the Yahoo blasts, emails and Facebook posts (you are soooo missing out!) CFPA now offers a Student Scholarship, Certified Paralegal Scholarship and an Advanced Certified Paralegal Scholarship through NALA. Be sure to check out our website http://www.cfpainc.org/nalanews.html for details. Deadline to apply is September 30th!
And during all of the above, CFPA volunteers were still working hard to bring in the Certified Paralegal Review Course 2013. They are like elves at Christmas, working hard all year round! Did you know that CFPA has been offering this a CP Review Course for over 15 years? Our Patron Sponsor, Orange Legal, opened up their new office a little early, just for our 7 week course. We cannot thank them enough for making their office space available to CFPA to hold the CP Review Course. Beautiful new DIGS guys!
And now we take off into the 3rd and 4th quarter. Our Family Fun Day BBQ at Downey Park, courtesy of The Presentation Group and US Legal, launched our efforts to collect donations to provide school supplies to the Children's Home Society. We also have Support the Troops plus our Annual Holiday Social at the Sheraton Downtown Orlando on December 6, 2013! Be sure to stay tuned for the ½ day CLE Seminar on that same day! Plenty more to plan and do before the year is out! I am sure the 2nd half of 2013 will be just as productive as the 1st half! We owe it all to our tireless volunteers and Patron Sponsors! And if I have not said it enough in this very long article - THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.
And do not forget, CFPA is always in need of an extra set of hands, arms, legs, brains... so if you would like to become more involved with any of our upcoming events, feel free to email me.
We appreciate Florida Coast Process, LLC.'s, sponsorship of our newsletter this month and as a continued supportive Patron Member of CFPA. NALA Convention 2014 ...

SAVE THE DATE FOR NALA CONVENTION IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA
Hi! I am Nancy Jordahl, ACP, FRP, FCP. I have served as CFPA's NALA Liaison in the past and I am currently a member of NALA's Continuing Education Council through 2014. I wanted to let you know as soon as possible for your planning purposes about a very exciting opportunity for your career enhancement. NALA's 39th Annual Convention, Educational Institutes and Exhibition will be July 23-25, 2014 in Charleston, South Carolina at the Charleston Marriott. It is not official yet, but the tentative Educational Institutes topics may be: Mock Trial (from an electronic document perspective); Elder Law, Intellectual Property, Corporate, Discovery/Litigation and Essential Skills.
Let me also let you in on a little secret. If you do not want to attend the Educational Institutes, you can still attend the convention and the member exchange, afternoon business sessions, vendor exhibits, Affiliated Associations exhibits and all evening receptions are completely FREE!
Or, if you do want to attend an Educational Institute (and I can understand that because they are pretty wonderful), there are some other ways to save a little bit of money. If you are a NALA member, you pay a reduced fee ($510 as opposed to $565). Also, if you are a NALA member, you can apply your $80 yearly gift certificate toward the registration fee. If you need some help trying to convince your employer to pay for your registration fees, let me know and I will talk to you about the techniques I have used.
Please seriously consider joining me in 2014 in Charleston at the NALA convention. I plan to drive so we can car-pool up there together. I am already telling my attorneys that I am not going to be available the week of July 21 through 25, 2014. I just got back from the NALA convention in Portland, Oregon and it was AWESOME! If you still have any doubts, just ask me, Peonca Grier, Leslie Brown, Lisa Vander Weide, Cassie Snyder, Natalie Colon, John Starks, Anne Hughes or Anne Marie Greer what a valuable experience the NALA convention can be. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments about the 2014 convention. It would be fantastic to have a loud and proud turnout from the Central Florida Paralegal Association representing in South Carolina!!!
