Odessa Storybook Tree Festival  storybook tree

To highlight the people we serve, Practice

Without Pressure has participated for the

second year in a row in the Odessa

Storybook Tree Festival.  Our tree features

artwork and photos of people we count as

clients and friends of PWP.  We chose the

storybook, "I Can Do It!" for visitors to read.

It reflects the success of those we support

and shows what a positive attitude can

produce. The festival runs from November

14 to December 30 and is a great way to

get into the holiday spirit.

From Sedation to Self-Confidence

Paul Sielski calls himself "The King of Pop."  He loves music, especially Bruce Springsteen, Elton John and Prince.  He likes "hanging around" and playing Uno.  But until Practice Without Pressure, dental care was not high on his list of preferred activities.

Paul was 43 when he started coming to PWP in 2010.  At first, he said, "I didn't know what to think."  Having dental care without sedation as a child, he remembers the drills and other tools.  "It was scary," he said.  Later, he was sedated for dentistry.  He found that scary too.
But on his first visit to PWP, he opened his mouth and allowed PWP dentist Dr. Chad Anzilotti to examine his teeth.  On visit five, he had a cavity filled, his first without sedation.  And on visit ten, Paul had six cavities filled in one visit, again without sedation.

Dr. Anzilotti gave him a break between fillings.  And Paul used the Stop Card if he felt he needed an additional breather. When he was done, Paul said, "I felt great."

He likes coming to PWP "because you guys are fun," he said.  The feeling is mutual. During exams, Paul tells staff that he needs to sleep and then closes his eyes and snores.  But when it's time to open his mouth, he's ready and willing.  "PWP helps me with my mouth," Paul said.

"Paul really helps himself," PWP Founder and CEO Deb Jastrebski said.  "We just help make it happen."

Oral Health in the Home - Where Good Habits Begin

Last year, Practice Without Pressure piloted its first Oral Health in the Home training program at Community Systems, Inc. CSI Executive Director David Paige said:

"PWP has another winner with this program...I am truly pleased with the Oral Health in the Home training program and recommend it for every direct care staff member that assists others with their oral hygiene care."

Now, expanded at CSI and at two other Delaware group home providers, the program combines hands-on and classroom training to direct support professionals and the people they serve. It aims to take the battle out of toothbrushing and flossing and make daily dental care routine. For more information on this program, contact Karen Bashkow, Sr. Programming Director at (302) 832-2800.
