Partner of the Month:

Murphys Suites

Murphys Suites has been one of our favorite partners since we moved in last November. Not only are they the newest hotel accommodations in Murphys but they are also solid and kind members of our Calaveras
Community. When owner, Dennis Lee of Lee-Way Construction and Development Company, built Murphys Suites and the building that is now
Outer Aisle's new home (since Nov. 2013), he had a vision of 2 locally-owned collaborative businesses working together to cater to tourists and locals alike for a comfortable night's stay at Murphys Suites and some good food a short walk across our shared parking lot.
We are proud to be partners with Dennis and his local, family-owed and operated business by sharing this vision and have already enjoyed partnering with the hotel on several of the packages, they sell online including the Twisted Folk Concert Series Package. These packages invite hotel guests to experience, explore, and patronize many local businesses and tourist attractions in Calaveras all of which
strengthen our local economy.

Have folks coming in from out of town and no room to put them? Book them in at Murphys Suites w/a package deal.  It's an easy and fun way to show them around and ensure they'll be comfortable and well fed.
We're even working on a room service option with them, which means your guests could get Outer Aisle food in bed!

Murphys Suites also has a great conference room that seats 80 people that is available for us to use to serve up or delicious, wholesome food for parties and special events so please call us to inquire for your next special event!

We are grateful to have a partner across the parking lot that shares our commitment to keeping the local economy strong and championing other local businesses so that Murphys can continue to thrive for
locals and be a retreat spot for folks looking for some mountain medicine. Thanks Murphys Suites!

Tomatoes arrive!

We just raised the bar on burgers:

I can't claim to be a "modest Kiwi" anymore. I don't usually listen to rumors nor do I spread them. However, I'm willing to destroy my reputation and let you know: that we have been voted unofficially (we are told) to have the best burgers in town!

It's not surprising considering what goes into them. First the bun, it's a foccacia roll from Aria (made with organic flour), secondly the burger itself: grass finished beef - can't beat the flavor and it's packed with Omega 3 and other nutritional benefits --- we now added a vine ripened tomato!

Grass finished is completely different than grassfed. Most steers are raised on grass until they are shipped off to the auction to be sold to large animal feed lots (CAFO's) where they are fed a diet of corn --- inevitably and most likely GMO origin. We are committed to ensuring that all products served in our restaurant are GMO free.

Our steers are grown on green irrigated pasture, as nature intended them to. As an extra bonus we feed them plant material from the farm and kitchen vegetable waste which they love. It's a frequent occurrence on harvest mornings to be greeted with incessant mooing --- we throw them a baseball bat sized squash or a pile of bug eaten chard. They eat a huge amount of the kitchen waste and Chef announced last week that 10% of products that reach the kitchen is composted or "cowed".

On the heals of this great burger....is the Diestel family ranch specializing in turkey. They just introduced their new line of Non GMO fed turkey products.

And if meat isn't your thing - then try our Portabella burger ---- just as delicious!

NEXT WEEK: Narrowing our wastestream: where does our food come from? how it's grown? what's the process in getting it to the Farmer's Kitchen table or your own?

At the market this Week:

Lime basil:
Especially great in fish and chicken dishes. Don't forget the classic caprese salad. Recipe here
One of the original pioneering farms, Terra Firma, is located on the western side of the Sacramento valley. Nestled under the hills this area is a citrus growing area with very little frost in the winter and warmer spring temps which allow them to plant and harvest crops earlier than most.

We've been shopping with Terra Firma for over ten years and the quality of their produce is one of the best. Cherry toms, heirlooms and red slicers are in as well as cucumbers, melons and corn. Are you ready? We are!

FRUIT from Tyson Hill:
Arctic Sweet Nectarines, Crimson Lady peaches, Snowbrite white peaches and Tilton apricots.

From the Farm: New red potatoes with their waxy creaminess; sweet red onions, yellow zephyr squash, italian squash and round yellow starbursts, radish, lettuce, salad greens, chard, kale, cilantro, parsley.

FROM WITHIN 150 MILES: Tomatoes, melons, corn, cucumbers fennel, beets and english peas.

Community Supported Agriculture:
Summer's abundance is only days away and the boxes are getting fuller and fuller....

Here's what one of our customer's told us this week:

"I'm a super busy, working, single woman and LOVE fresh food but end up only getting to the grocery or farmers markets once a month.  Your service has brought back fresh eating into my world and I am so thankful."
JoLynn

Community Support Request!

Our "Fill Our Sails" Campaign is the sustenance we need to grow into the community center we work towards.

With that in mind, we are looking for a washer and dryer!  Do you have a working washer and dryer gathering dust?  We are in need of the machines to wash our linens at the restaurant and keep the re-use cycle spinning. We are branching our our catering opportunities and aim to keep our Marygold Fabricating napkins for years to come.

We are also looking for:

  • icechests
  • platters
  • catering wares
  • donations of any kind

Email Christine at outeraislefoods@gmail.com if you have any leads. Thank you all for your support!

Outer Aisle FARMERS KITCHEN, MARKET & PUB. "growing food, feeding community".

Behind the scenes of Outer Aisle is Taylor Farms. Located on Main Street, Douglas Flat, our nearly two acre "beyond organic" farm produces a large variety of seasonal vegetables including these seasonal highlights: summer heirloom tomatoes, fall cauliflower, winter carrots and spring potatoes to name just a few!

Outer Aisle also operates a year round CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. We distribute the highest quality, local, seasonal and regional produce and products to members all over Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties. We only purchase product from farms and producers who are committed to ecologically sustainable practices and go beyond the National "Organic" standards.
COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE

We invite you to be a member of our CSA. Community Supported Agriculture is more than a statement of support it's an amazing way to connect your palate with seasonal eating on a regular basis.

Where the food comes from?

People ask us all the time is our produce "organic" and while we are tempted to just say yes and let the organic definition tell the story we don't. We are not certified "organic" and to use the word as a casual expression would get us into trouble. We believe that our practice of stewardship goes beyond what is required under the "organic" label. We are committed to caring for the soil and the micro-organisms that so skillfully maintain fertility so that plants can thrive. And above all, we have a direct connection with our customers and invite you to come out to the fields on one of our farm tours. (Starting in May every 2nd and 4th Saturday.)

Thank you to those pioneering farmers who worked for years, at first alone and then together, to stand firm in ensuring the adoption of strict regulations for what was to become a multi-billion dollar industry. Over the years since "organic" moved to a national standard some of those regs have been "watered" down to allow the larger industrial farms to get a piece of the dollar pie.

We love it that the farmers who were the originators of organic are the predominant producers of the food that we eat, we sell and we cook.

Those pioneering farmers are still doing what they have always done: adhering to their own high standards of organic and going beyond what is required. Full Belly Farm, Terra Firma, Coke Farms are three of the original pioneers that supply us with produce at times when our garden is not producing. They are advocates of a sustainable approach and even though they are certified organic their practices are what nurtures community: soil and people!

Those pioneers are inspiring the younger generation and we are proud also to complement our produce with those from up and coming organic farms like Tomatero in Watsonville.

Enjoy seasonal produce and the insurance that what you eat comes from farms that practice diversity, stewardship and are pioneers of good health.
