Murphys Suites

Murphys Suites has been one of our favorite partners since we moved in last November. Not only are they the newest hotel accommodations in Murphys but they are also solid and kind members of our Calaveras
Community. When owner, Dennis Lee of Lee-Way Construction and Development Company, built Murphys Suites and the building that is now
Outer Aisle's new home (since Nov. 2013), he had a vision of 2 locally-owned collaborative businesses working together to cater to tourists and locals alike for a comfortable night's stay at Murphys Suites and some good food a short walk across our shared parking lot.
We are proud to be partners with Dennis and his local, family-owed and operated business by sharing this vision and have already enjoyed partnering with the hotel on several of the packages, they sell online including the Twisted Folk Concert Series Package. These packages invite hotel guests to experience, explore, and patronize many local businesses and tourist attractions in Calaveras all of which
strengthen our local economy.

Have folks coming in from out of town and no room to put them? Book them in at Murphys Suites w/a package deal.  It's an easy and fun way to show them around and ensure they'll be comfortable and well fed.
We're even working on a room service option with them, which means your guests could get Outer Aisle food in bed!

Murphys Suites also has a great conference room that seats 80 people that is available for us to use to serve up or delicious, wholesome food for parties and special events so please call us to inquire for your next special event!

We are grateful to have a partner across the parking lot that shares our commitment to keeping the local economy strong and championing other local businesses so that Murphys can continue to thrive for
locals and be a retreat spot for folks looking for some mountain medicine. Thanks Murphys Suites!

THE STORY OF THE VOGLIOTTI ONION

It was one warm summer day, twenty year's ago or so, that we went to visit our neighbor, Josephine Vogliotti. She was the last living member of her family at age 96 - her brother Ernie was 102 when he died. The family was famous for their "vegii-tables" selling them to the miners by horse-cart in the day and later to folks that would come out to the ranch.

This incredible specimen is a true Murphys' heirloom from the Vogliotti family. They were Italian market gardeners and also our neighbors for a good many years.  For several years we'd been growing "their" tomato, the Camalay and when we would bring her one to enjoy she would hold it in her hands and smell deeply, exclaiming "this is one of ours, isn't it?" What a precious moment that was and still is today, after 22 years of growing and saving seed from that tomato, her words spring a tear. It was on one of these visits that Josephine directed us down to the cellar, where she hadn't been for many years, to a jar on the shelf filled with onion seeds. We took those seeds home and germinated them just as she instructed: "Plant them on the first week after the full moon in August!" Luckily, a few sprouted and we grew our first Vogliotti onion that year. After many trials and near losses, we were able to successfully bring this onion from near extinction to abundance.

We have subsequently grown, harvested and shared many of the seeds with gardening friends to help preserve this now unique variety. The story goes that the onion was bought from Burpee seeds as a "Red Weathersfield" in the early 1890's and continually grown at the ranch until the early 1990's. The Vogliottis grew this same variety of seed for 100 years because of it's flavor! We consider it be the best-tasting summer onions ever. Eaten raw, it is sweet and mild flavored, so wonderful that it is perfect in a Greek salad or in a sandwich with no onion-y aftertaste -- equally delicious sauteed or caramalized.

Last week we shared a recipe that we suspect will work well with these gems:

Taylor Beef Sugo over Pappardelle pasta

At the market this Week:

Find out what's fresh and in season when you stop by our farm market. Someone may ask if you've heard of a garlic scape and if you read this article you'll be a bit wiser but may not be able to recognize them. They are the false seed stalk of a garlic bulb. In the spring just before they start to form a decent sized bowl they shoot up a stalk which is sweet and full of garlic juiciness. Segmented like asparagus they can be added to stir fry dishes, sauteed with onions and made into a basil pesto.

Berries, berries, berries!
Olallieberries or affectionately olallies (get a recipe for them here) are ripe and ready as well as strawberries, blueberries and blackcurrants.

From the Farm: New red potatoes with their waxy creaminess; sweet red onions, yellow zephyr squash, italian squash and round yellow starbursts, radish, arugula, salad greens, chard, kale, cilantro, parsley.

FROM WITHIN 150 MILES: artichokes, asparagus, fennel, beets and english peas.

Outer Aisle FARMERS KITCHEN, MARKET & PUB. "growing food, feeding community".

Behind the scenes of Outer Aisle is Taylor Farms. Located on Main Street, Douglas Flat, our nearly two acre "beyond organic" farm produces a large variety of seasonal vegetables including these seasonal highlights: summer heirloom tomatoes, fall cauliflower, winter carrots and spring potatoes to name just a few!

Outer Aisle also operates a year round CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. We distribute the highest quality, local, seasonal and regional produce and products to members all over Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties. We only purchase product from farms and producers who are committed to ecologically sustainable practices and go beyond the National "Organic" standards.
COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE

We invite you to be a member of our CSA. Community Supported Agriculture is more than a statement of support it's an amazing way to connect your palate with seasonal eating on a regular basis.

Where the food comes from?

People ask us all the time is our produce "organic" and while we are tempted to just say yes and let the organic definition tell the story we don't. We are not certified "organic" and to use the word as a casual expression would get us into trouble. We believe that our practice of stewardship goes beyond what is required under the "organic" label. We are committed to caring for the soil and the micro-organisms that so skillfully maintain fertility so that plants can thrive. And above all, we have a direct connection with our customers and invite you to come out to the fields on one of our farm tours. (Starting in May every 2nd and 4th Saturday.)

Thank you to those pioneering farmers who worked for years, at first alone and then together, to stand firm in ensuring the adoption of strict regulations for what was to become a multi-billion dollar industry. Over the years since "organic" moved to a national standard some of those regs have been "watered" down to allow the larger industrial farms to get a piece of the dollar pie.

We love it that the farmers who were the originators of organic are the predominant producers of the food that we eat, we sell and we cook.

Those pioneering farmers are still doing what they have always done: adhering to their own high standards of organic and going beyond what is required. Full Belly Farm, Terra Firma, Coke Farms are three of the original pioneers that supply us with produce at times when our garden is not producing. They are advocates of a sustainable approach and even though they are certified organic their practices are what nurtures community: soil and people!

Those pioneers are inspiring the younger generation and we are proud also to complement our produce with those from up and coming organic farms like Tomatero in Watsonville.

Enjoy seasonal produce and the insurance that what you eat comes from farms that practice diversity, stewardship and are pioneers of good health.
